Final scores
- Club Brugge 2, Atalanta 1
- Celtic 1, Bayern Munich 2
- Monaco 0, Benfica 1
- Feyenoord 1, AC Milan 0
Wednesday's UEFA Champions League action was all about tight margins, with four teams carrying a one goal advantage into next week's second leg of the knockout phase playoffs after tightly contested matches.
Bayern Munich beat Celtic 2-1 with goals from Michael Olise and Harry Kane, but the Scottish side's ability to stay in the game meant they were able to score shortly before the final whistle and laid the foundation for a competitive game in Munich next week. Feyenoord, meanwhile, beat AC Milan 1-0 after a goal from Igor Paixao just three minutes into the game.
Benfica will also carry a 1-0 advantage into their home leg next week after beating a 10 man Monaco, who will be without Al-Musrati after he received two yellow cards on Wednesday. In the early game, Club Brugge beat Atalanta 2-1 thanks to a controversial late penalty.
There were four winning teams today, but none of them carved out a margin of victory that leaves them feeling safe heading into the second leg next week. Everything will hang in the balance for these sides when they return to action on Tuesday, setting up for another fascinating round of games when the Champions League returns.
That's especially true for Bayern, who almost had to hang on for dear life at the end of their match with Celtic today, and Milan, who were unable to show off their attacking prowess despite starting a new-look, all-star team up top.
80' Di Maria came on for Benfica only 13 minutes ago, but he comes off injured, perhaps re-aggravating the muscle injury that kept him out for a few days this month. That's a blow for Benfica, since Di Maria is their top goalscorer this season.
79' Celtic finally have their goal, with Maeda scoring from close range on a corner. There's quick check for offside but the referee gives the home side the all-clear, meaning it will a fascinating last 10 minutes as Bayern hang onto their 2-1 lead.
75' Celtic may be two goals down, but they enjoy a decent spell of possession in which they get close to scoring on a couple of occasions. Maeda has a promising chance but the angle's too extreme to get the perfect shot off and a few moments later, Neuer comes up with a save to keep Celtic at bay.
60' Pulisic's night is over at the hour mark, with Chukwueze on in his place. It was not exactly a bad night for the USMNT star but Milan have not offered much in attack and so the pressure's on to change things up as they still deal with a 1-0 deficit at Feyenoord. They have put four of their five shots on target but have generated just 0.31 expected goals in the process, an uninspiring output so far despite starting as many attacking stars as possible.
57' There's a penalty check underway at Celtic Park, where the referees are reviewing whether or not Bayern's Upamecano steps on an opponent or gets a touch on the ball during a tackle. The VAR clears Upamecano of any wrongdoing, and so Bayern hang onto their 2-0 lead over Celtic.
52' Things have just gone from bad to worse for Monaco, who are now down a goal and a player in the span of just four minutes. Monaco's Embolo is fouled and his teammate, Al-Musrati, asks for a yellow card but instead gets booked for dissent. It's Al-Musrati's second yellow card of the game, so he's off.
48' The deadlock is finally broken in Monaco, where visitors Benfica have the lead. Pavlidis takes the ball off a defender in the penalty area and then skillfully finishes from an angle to score his sixth Champions League goal of the season, overtaking Di Maria as the team's loading goalscorer this campaign.
49' Bayern only needed four minutes after the halftime break to double their lead, with the goal coming from -- who else? -- Kane. He's left unmarked on a set piece and once the ball lands in his vicinity, Kane wastes no time taking a powerful strike from inside the six-yard box to make it 2-0 against Celtic. If you leave Kane open in front of goal, you generally live to regret it.
We've only had two goals so far in the later games, perhaps a sign that victory will not exactly be straightforward for anyone today. Feyenoord took the lead in the opening minutes of the game against Milan, who have not done much and are paying the price of Maignan's mistake on the goal. Bayern, meanwhile, had to wait all half to take the lead against Celtic and Monaco and Benfica are still waiting to break the deadlock.
45' At long last, Bayern break the deadlock, thanks to a stellar strike from Olise. Upamecano plays a perfect ball to his teammate, who makes his way into the penalty area before hitting the ball skillfully with his left foot to give Bayern a 1-0 lead just before halftime at Celtic Park.
44' Bayern looked as close as they have all day to scoring, with a stellar ball from a header landing at the far post. Kane gets a great touch and it looks like the ball is certain to land in the back of the net, but he hits the side netting. Bayern might rue that missed chance, especially since meaningful goalscoring opportunities have been few and far between -- that shot was their first since the 13th minute.
39' It might already be a good day for Paixao after he scored the game's only goal so far, but he gets close again as halftime nears. He gets the better of Walker and takes an impressive shot, but the ball hits the crossbar rather than the target.
32' Bayern re-enter the penalty area and stick around for a while, swinging the ball in and around the box as they respond to Celtic's attempts to bounce the ball out of play. The visitors look close to their first goal with a strike from Kane from close range, though Schmeichel makes an impressive stop. The play is eventually deemed offside so it won't go towards his official count, but Celtic seem willing to absorb Bayern's pressure and make it very difficult on Vincent Kompany's side to get ahead -- a strategy that is working so far.
26' Milan move towards goal as they search for the equalizer, with Felix quickly approaching the goalkeeper. In an effort to get out of Wellenreuther's way, though, he accidentally kicks his opponent in the side of the head. Wellenreuther is now receiving treatment on the pitch.
18' Bayern Munich are putting in the work at Celtic Park to get the go-ahead goal, even if it hasn't come just yet. They have three shots so far, most notable among them an attempt from Olise following a fantastic ball over the top from Kane. Schmeichel was up to the task and made the save, and it'll probably be the first of many he'll make today as Bayern continue their search for an opening goal.
3' Feyenoord are on the board courtesy of Paixao, who takes a nice shot from an angle but it should have been an easy save for Maignan. The goalkeeper gets a touch on it but can't control it at all and so the ball ends up in the back of the net. It's slippery out there in Rotterdam, but Maignan really should have done better.
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers spoke to CBS Sports about the challenge Bayern Munich brings, how his side will approach the two-legged tie as the underdogs and the unmatched atmosphere at Celtic Park.
Today's early game has officially come to a close, and in dramatic fashion! Club Brugge beat Atalanta 2-1 with a penalty, which was awarded in the dying minutes of the match. The Italian side were in disbelief throughout and the audience was treated with several very dramatic reactions, including Hien slowly crumbling to the ground when the referee made the decision and three Atalanta players who were booked for dissent. Atalanta manager Gasperini also went straight down the tunnel when Nilsson converted the penalty, only to re-appear a little bit later as the final moments of the game played out.
Brugge performed well and will gladly take the win and first leg advantage, but Atalanta will undoubtedly feel hard done by with the penalty call at the end.
