Chelsea vs. Manchester United score: Blues, Red Devils play scoreless draw at rain-drenched Old Trafford

Manchester United and Chelsea FC played to a scoreless draw on Saturday at Old Trafford in Manchester, England. Pouring rain played a factor in the match, and the final result does little for the two clubs in the way of Premier League standings as they both remain outside the top four.

Both two teams appeared to utilize the first half to get settled and accustomed to the drenched pitch, which heavily impacted the ball's movement. Chelsea retained the majority of possession in the first half, but only recorded one shot on goal compared to United's three shots on target. The Blues likely felt hardened by the no-call after United's Harry Maguire wrapped up the neck of Cesar Azpilicueta on a set piece as the two sides entered halftime scoreless.

Edinson Cavani made his Manchester United debut, as he and Paul Pogba came on as second-half substitutes. Chelsea nearly broke through at the hour mark with Christian Pulisic unable to get his boot on a cross into the box. Marcus Rashford came close to breaking the scoreless deadlock in stoppage time for Manchester United, but his strong shot would be punched away by Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.

Both teams came into the game with their own set of defensive woes, and we saw Chelsea manager Frank Lampard get his team settled in a five back initially. There were few shots on goal from either side during this match, but both back lines did well to sustain small moments of pressure and disrupt any runs. The performances could be viewed as a small victory for each side in terms of personal individual performances as both clubs get set to continue their Champions League group stage on Tuesday.

Cavani debuts for Manchester United

Man United announced the signing of Edinson Cavani to the team earlier this month, but the striker had yet to make an appearance, working his way back from injury. The Uruguayan international made his debut in the match during the second half and nearly broke through on goal off a set piece for the home side.

Mendy, Silva keep Chelsea's sheet clean

Mendy, Chelsea's keeper, had a monster game for Chelsea. He came up with two big saves, and perhaps the biggest of the game in stoppage time on a rocket from United's Marcus Rashford. Thiago Silva, meanwhile, was a rock for Chelsea with his six clearances, and two interceptions. With 95 touches on the ball today, he recorded a 93.5 pass accuracy on 77 of his passes.
