The Copa America Quarterfinals begin on Thursday, and only eight teams remain after starting with 16. Who is the favorite, who is the underdog? Below we rank the remaining teams, with Lionel Messi and Argentina at the summit.
1.
(Argentina)
Last edition: 1st
Why: Argentina is the only team to win every match so far and did it in style, scoring 10 goals and allowing just one. They look like the clear-cut favorite to win the cup, even with Lionel Messi being silly.
2.
(USA)
Last edition: 3rd
Why: Tons of momentum after winning a tough group that included Colombia. Playing its best soccer of the tournament at this point but were fortunate to get a home game in Seattle. Ecuador won't be easy, but USA has the edge, especially if John Brooks keeps playing like he has.
3.
(Mexico)
Last edition: 2nd
Why: El Tri had no business drawing Venezuela, but it was a good result in the end to avoid Argentina. The defense has to be better though, but in attack there are no problems. Is there enough to beat Chile though?
4.
(Chile)
Last edition: 8th
Why: Last year's top team responded well after going down against Panama, but what was up with Claudio Bravo? The Barcelona goalkeeper had two gaffes in goal. Do that in the next round, and see you later.
5.
(Peru)
Last edition: 7th
Why: Not a top five team when it comes to talent, but Peru has speed and some quality and that win over Brazil, though unwarranted, brings big time momentum to Ricardo Gareca's team. This team believes it can beat Colombia.
6.
(Ecuador)
Last edition: 6th
Why: Beat Haiti to take care of business and advance. Though the team lacks a star up top, the quick passing and creativity has made up for it. This team will give the U.S. trouble. Don't be shocked if they win.
7.
(Colombia)
Last edition: 5th
Why: Backed into the quarterfinals with that loss against Costa Rica. At full strength, this team has as good a shot as any to win the cup. But will resting players in the final game bite them in the end?
8.
(Venezuela)
Last edition: 9th
Why: The Vinotinto -- Copa America's Cinderella. This team somehow got out of a group that included Mexico and Uruguay and has stuck to playing with patience and strength at the back while hoping to ping a goal up top. It has worked, but it likely ends here with Argentina next.
