El Clasico score: Barcelona destroy Real Madrid in Spanish Super Cup final as Lamine Yamal, Raphinha star

Barcelona won the Spanish Super Cup in resounding fashion on Sunday, defeating rivals Real Madrid 5-2 in the first edition of El Clasico in the new year.

Kylian Mbappe gave Real Madrid the lead just five minutes in but Barcelona played well throughout the first half and were rewarded for their hard work. Teen sensation Lamine Yamal scored the equalizer in the 22nd minute, while Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha and Alejandro Balde all scored before the break to give their side a 4-1 lead at halftime.

Raphinha added a fifth goal to Barcelona's tally just two minutes after the break, but things got more complicated in the 56th minute when goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny was sent off for a foul on Mbappe. Real Madrid won a freekick from that incident and Rodrygo scored directly from the set piece in the 60th minute, but it was not enough to truly mount a comeback.

Barcelona won their 15th Super Cup and their first since 2023 with the lopsided win, and they also collected their first trophy since manager Hansi Flick took over in the summer. This marks another banner result for Flick, who also was in charge for Barcelona's 4-0 win at Real Madrid in October.

FT: Real Madrid 2, Barcelona 5

That's a wrap in Jeddah, where a very entertaining game swung heavily in Barcelona's favor. Again, it would be hard to argue that they did not deserve it -- they were efficient and effective in attack for the first hour and then kept Real Madrid at bay for the rest, They pick up their first trophy with Hansi Flick at the helm as a result, completing a very successful business trip to Saudi Arabia.

Raphinha booked from the bench

89' Things have been a lot calmer since Rodrygo's goal, but Raphinha was just shown a yellow card for shouting while he was on the bench. Guess there's still a little drama left in this one.

Changes for Real Madrid

75' Garcia and Diaz come on for Vinicius and Mendy as Real Madrid try to make up the difference with 15 minutes to go, though it's a tall order. Not only do Barcelona have the three goal cushion, they've switched to a defensive game plan that is starting to suck the life out of the game.

60' A lifeline for Real Madrid! The freekcikc that Real Madrid won through Szczesny's red card offense paid off, with Rodrygo taking the set piece and scoring directly from there. With 30 minutes still on the clock, it's anyone's guess how this game will end.

Red card for Szczesny!

55' Mbappe evades Barcelona's offside trap and so Szczesny makes a tackle to stop the play. Mbappe appeals for a penalty and potentially a red card for the goalkeeper, so the referee goes to the monitor to check and gives a red card to Szczesny. While Pena gets ready to replace him, Real Madrid set up for a freekcik -- not the penalty that Mbappe was appealing for. Another major twist in an already wild game!

Back for the second half

Ancelotti makes one change to the Real Madrid lineup, bringing on Ceballos for Camavinga. It was not a banner half for Camavinga as they conceded four goals, but he has the added baggage of carrying a yellow -- and perhaps being lucky to not be sent off during that poor first half.

HT: Real Madrid 1, Barcelona 4

Well, that escalated quickly, didn't it? Real Madrid may have scored first but Barcelona came back roaring with four goals  and have a healthy lead heading into the half. It's hard to argue they don't deserve it -- they've been more clinical in attack, and perhaps more importantly, taken advantage of Real Madrid's sloppy efforts in defense. This game is definitely tilting in Barcelona's favor but with 45 minutes left on the clock, it will soon be time to find out if Madrid can reverse course.

45'+10 Barcelona grab one more goal before the break! Again, it feels like Real Madrid were unwilling to defend and it's Balde who takes advantage of the space this time and gives his side a towering lead just as everyone heads into the tunnel for halftime.

40' And just like that, it's 3-1 to Barcelona! Kounde plays a stunning long cross towards goal and Raphinha takes advantage of the space between Vazquez and Tchouameni to cleanly head the ball and give his side a two-goal lead. It feels like it's all coming apart for Real Madrid now.

36' Camavinga concedes a penalty and Lewandowski steps up to take the spotkick, making no mistake as he slots the ball into the back of the net and gives his side the lead for the first time today.

Penalty for Barcelona!

35' The referee's at the monitor checking if Camavinga just conceded a penalty, and the verdict is in -- the Real Madrid man's kick on Gavi earns him a yellow card and a spotkick for Barcelona.

22' Barcelona officially have their equalizer, and who else would it be but Yamal? Lewandowski passes the ball to Yamal deep in Real Madrid's half and the teenager makes a run into the box, closing things out with a simple finish just feet from the goal line.

Mbappe's receiving treatment

18' Mbappe is now being treated on the sidelines for a medical issue, leaving Real Madrid down to 10 players temporarily. The incident was not without shenanigans -- Raphinha picke dup the medical team's bag and moved it to the sidelines in an effort to resume play quickly, an order usually issued by the referee. After about a minute on the touchline, though, Mbappe is cleared and back in action.

GOAL! Real Madrid 1, Barcelona 0

5' Shortly after Courtois' save on Raphinha's shot, Vinicius steals the ball off Casado and he makes his way towards goal. It doesn't take him very long to play a slick ball to his right to Mbappe, who then makes a long run and outmaneuvers Pedri on his way to scoring the game's opening goal from close range.

Courtois with a big save

5' Real Madrid's defense look asleep as Raphinha ends up with the ball close to goal, but Courtois makes a point blank save to prevent the opening goal.

Yamal shoots from distance

3' The first real chance of the game goes Barcelona's way, with Hansi Flick's side winning the ball near the midway line after an errant pass from an opponent. The ball eventually lands to Yamal, who has a nice look at goal despite the distance. Courtois is up for the task and makes the save, awarding Barcelona a corner that they are unable to do much with.

Lamine Yamal's time to shine?

Lamine Yamal has barely missed a beat this season with seven goals and 11 assists so far this season, a tally that includes a goal against Athletic Club on Wednesday. Chuck Booth suggests that it might be worth placing a bet on him to notch another goal or assist and continue to build on an impressive start to his career.

  • Booth: "Lamine Yamal goal or assists (+135) --There aren't many words left to describe what Lamine Yamal is doing at Barcelona. A transcendent talent, there isn't much on a soccer pitch that he can't do, and Madrid's defense won't be able to keep up with him. The 17-year-old has seven goals and 12 assists in all competitions so being able to get Yamal to score or assist at plus odds is quite a number. While facing Madrid is a daunting task, doing so at a neutral location takes a lot of the sting out and if Yamal's on his game, he'll be involved in a goal."

Hello and welcome!

We didn't have to wait very long in the new year for the first edition of El Clasico of 2025, and there's plenty of intrigue as Real Madrid and Barcelona meet in Saudi Arabia in the Spanish Super Cup final. Their last meeting, in which Barcelona won 4-0 in Madrid, felt emblematic of the changing dynamics for La Liga's top teams, and today's match could offer a similar outcome. At the midway point of the season and with both sides very much in the mix for trophies, today's game could provide a chance for the winner to gain the kind of momentum that could be crucial in a title charge.
