Liverpool vs. Manchester United score: Reds produce 34 shots but can't find net in frustrating Anfield draw

Manchester United came out of Anfield unscathed, securing a 0-0 draw against a dominant Liverpool team that slipped to second place on the Premier League table on Sunday. Liverpool were dominant from the get go and had four shots by the opening 15 minutes but were disjointed in midfield and failed to register a ton of quality chances despite rendering United useless during the first half. That story continued throughout the second half, but United had a few openings towards the midpoint of the second half. The game was still Liverpool's to win, though, but the wasteful play continued and so the game ended scoreless despite a brief advantage following Diogo Dalot's two quick yellow cards in stoppage time.

In the end, Liverpool had 68.6% possession and 34 shots but only eight found the target and Jurgen Klopp's side mustered just 2.09 expected goals, which ended with them dropping points at home for the first time in Premier League play this season. United were not particularly impressive with their 31.4% possession, posting just six shots and one on target.

The Reds were atop the Premier League table at the start of the weekend but now sit second, a point behind Arsenal following their 2-0 win over Brighton and Hove Albion. United sit in seventh, six points shy of fourth place Manchester City.

FT: Liverpool 0, United 0

Another Liverpool chance

85' Tsimikas crosses the ball into the box towards Konate on the far post but United clear it. Liverpool keep the play alive but nothing comes of it, and the same goes for the handball claim that VAR swiftly denies.

United's promising glance

79' Antony makes the most of a run down the right flank but cannot capitalize quickly enough, which allows Liverpool's defensive shape to take hold before he sends a ball across the goal line to Rashford. United try to involve the team with some decent build up play but the Reds are able to kill the play.

Liverpool close again

76' Salah's quick throw-in creates another strong chance for Liverpool, but the ball gets away from Nunez and Diaz can do little with it despite the fact that one of Onana's teammates steps on him and keeps him out of the play for a moment.

Back and forth

70' Things have finally livened up at Anfield with both sides trading opportunities over the last five minutes. Salah has the best chance of this stretch but his shot from inside the box does little to trouble Onana, while McTominay's shot at the other end just moments later sails well over the crossbar.

Hojlund nearly scores

67' And just like that, United have their best look of the game when they go on the counter. The ball eventually falls to Hojlund, whose in prime position to score, but he gets it wrong and Alisson can collect with relative ease. Hojlund's still waiting for his first Premier League goal.

Alexander-Arnold just wide

66' After a roughly 15 minute stretch where neither side registered a shot, Liverpool have increased the intensity a bit. Salah had another decent strike from distance and Alexander-Arnold also took a shot form outside the box that sailed just wide of the goal. Nunez is also adding to Liverpool's shot count with another from distance.

A moment for United

54' This game is still very much in Liverpool's control, but United break away a couple of times and have some meaningful glances at goal from the likes of Dalot and Garnacho. Alisson is able to keep his side out of trouble, though.

HT: Liverpool 0, United 0

The hosts have fully had the advantage and boasted 67.5% of the ball during the first half, but have very little to show for it. They racked up 15 shots, which very much outnumbers the two United registered in the opening 10 minutes and failed to add to since, but put just three of them on target for 1.11 expected goals.

Salah tries from distance

41' Salah has the ball yards from goal but has a clear cut shot so he takes it, but a little deflection allows Onana to make the save. Liverpool are collecting shots, but aren't at their most clinical today.

Van Dijk almost scores

28' Liverpool are racking up set pieces, the latest a corner. It's prime territory for van Dijk and he gets a very nice header off but Onana steps up to make the stop.

Liverpool close

16' The Reds have their best chance of the game so far, which starts with a well-placed cross from Alexander-Arnold on the right wing. Onana seems to have a hold of it but drops the ball, which allows Salah the chance to pounce on the opportunity but he can't get a meaningful touch on the ball and United have the chance to clear it out for a corner. Nothing comes of it, though.

Attack-minded starts

12' It comes as little surprise that Liverpool have dominated the early minutes of this one and already have 63.6% possession and four shots, but they are lacking a bit of quality with those shots since none have been on target. For their part, United have had a couple of meaningful glimpses forward but like Liverpool, also have yet to find the target.

United down, not out?

Things have not gone United's way lately, but Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is wary of a United team that has plenty to prove. Here's what he had to say ahead of the big game.

  • Klopp: "I never like when the headlines about United are not great before we play because it's like, 'OK, then it is the game where they can put everything right.' The more bad things people say about them, the stronger they will show up. That is always the case. I don't like that."

Top spot on the line

Arsenal just wrapped up a 2-0 win over Brighton, taking them top of the table with 39 minutes. Aston Villa have also leapfrogged Liverpool to head into second place with a 2-1 win over Brentford, bringing them to 38 points. The Reds, who currently have 37 minutes, need a win to return to top spot, while a draw would see them overtake Villa for second.

Team news

No surprise, most of the usual suspects line up for both sides in this one. Rashford is back in the team for United after missing their Champions League fixture with an illness, but he will start the match on the bench. Here's a look at both sides' lineups.

Liverpool starting XI: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Konate, van Dijk, Tsimikas, Szoboszlai, Endō, Gravenberch, Salah, Nunez, Diaz

Manchester United starting XI: Onana, Dalot, Evans, Varane, Shaw, Mainoo, McTominay, Amrabat, Antony, Hojlund, Garnacho
