Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said that talented winger Leroy Sane is finalizing a transfer to Bayern Munich. Last month, the Spanish manager confirmed that Sane rejected the club's latest contract offer and will leave the club this summer assuming they receive a sufficient offer. That offer appears to have arrived from Bayern with the two clubs currently negotiating. The 24-year-old German international hasn't played since August 2019 when he suffered a torn ACL and faced an uphill battle to become a regular starter despite now being fit.
"It looks like [he's leaving,] but it is not already done," Guardiola said on Wednesday, according to the Manchester Evening News.
Sane's move to Bayern is for a transfer fee of £54.8 million, according to the report.
"There are some little issues but it looks like he is going to go to Munich. We wish him all the best and big thanks for our years together."
Guardiola said last month that Sane didn't want to extend his contract despite numerous attempts.
"The club have talked to me," Guardiola said. "They've offered two or three times to extend his contract, he rejected so it means he wants to play in another club. If at the end of this season we arrive at an agreement with another club, he is going to leave."
Sane has been constantly linked with a move to Bayern Munich, and a move makes perfect sense for both parties. City wants to get rid of a player that no longer fits into their plans and doesn't want to be there, while Sane is in search of consistent minutes. The German international shined in the 2017-18 season with 14 goals and following it up with 16 in the following season, though his role slowly started to shift towards more of a bench player. This season he has played in just one match due to the injury.
For City, it would be nice to keep a player with such potential, but the club has no shortage of options in attack with Raheem Sterling, Sergio Aguero, Bernardo Silva, Gabriel Jesus, Riyad Mahrez and others.
Sane was surprisingly left off of Germany's 2018 World Cup roster but has averaged double digit goals across the last four seasons. He joined City in 2016 from German side Schalke.
