Manchester United vs. Arsenal score: Pepe fuels Gunners to big Premier League win over Red Devils

MIkel Arteta picked up his first managerial win on New Year's Day

Arsenal put together one of its finest performances of the season on Wednesday and picked up its first home win since early October, beating rival Manchester United 2-0. The Gunners were lively and exciting, with the crowd at the Emirates fully behind the squad as it held United to nothing in attack, giving new coach Mikel Arteta his first career managerial victory.

Nicolas Pepe scored the winner eight minutes in while Sokratis scored the second in the 42nd minute, allowing Arsenal to jump from 13th place to 10th, as the Gunners rolled. United had won its last two league games and could have pulled within two points of fourth-place Chelsea but laid an egg with a shockingly incompetent performance against the under-performing defense of the hosts.

Here's a look at Pepe's winner:

It certainly felt like a new Arsenal, but it's still early to tell if these changes by Arteta are making big-time impacts. He went with his top four attacking players in this team with a double central midfield tandem in Granit Xhaka and Lucas Torreira, and in this instance it worked. It just felt different with this side, a renewed spirit and belief from the fans that translated to the pitch.

But the success of this match may just be down to one thing, and that's being happy.

Defender David Luiz spoke to BT Sport after the match and discussed how when you are happy, the results come, hinting to the possibly unsettling situation before under Unai Emery and interim boss Freddie Ljungberg.

"Mikel is a great coach, he knows football, was a great player. I think he can improve every single player. In life, when you are happy, the results can be totally different ... If you work with happiness, if you work believing what you are doing, it's totally different," Luiz said.

It's just an off day for Lacazette. Aubameyang does all the work to beat defenders and set him up, but the Frenchman's strike is high and wide.

59' Ooooh what a miss! Matic plays a great ball into Pereira, but his ball hits the side net. Just wide.

Lots of work for United in this second half. Really missing Pogba's creativity and it's just that inconsistent United we so often see.

33' Spin city! Lacazette with a great chance after a turn in the box, and then it is similar from Torreira who drills a shot just wide!

Half an hour in so far, and each team has just one shot on goal. Arsenal sharper on the ball, while United's passing is just WAY off. Lingard has turned it over several times.
