Mexico star Chicharito Hernandez breaks hand after freak injury on the stairs

This isn't how fans of Bayer Leverkusen envisioned the season beginning. Star striker Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez will miss two weeks after breaking his hand while falling down the stairs at his apartment in Germany, the Bundesliga announced. The German league begins this weekend.

The Mexico international, who lead the team with 17 league goals last season, broke the metacarpal bone in his right hand. He was operated on at a hospital in Merheim and should be available in two weeks.

But it isn't just bad news for Bayer fans. Mexico plays El Salvador in World Cup qualifying on Sept. 2, and Hernandez looks set to miss that clash as well.

Bad news all around for Mexico and Leverkusen.
