Paris Saint-Germain have confirmed the signing of Georginio Wijnaldum from Liverpool on a free transfer this Thursday. The Netherlands international put pen to paper on a contract until 2024 at Parc des Princes after choosing to move to the French capital over a switch to Barcelona.

"PSG is delighted to announce the transfer of Georginio Wijnaldum," read a club statement. "Arriving from Liverpool, the Netherlands international midfielder has signed with the club from the French capital until 30 June 2024."

Wijnaldum, 30, is currently with the Dutch national team preparing for Euro 2020 and will earn around $11.5 million per year with PSG.

"Signing for PSG is a new challenge for me," said Wijnaldum. "I am joining one of the best squads in Europe and I want to bring all my desire and commitment to this ambitious project. PSG have proved how good they are in recent years and I am convinced that together, with our supporters, we can go even further and higher."

The Ligue 1 powerhouse are also in talks over a deal to bring Gianluigi Donnarumma to Paris from AC Milan on a free as sporting director Leonardo tries to build a squad for head coach Mauricio Pochettino to get the best out of the group.

Statistically, 2020-21 was not Wijnaldum's best season with Liverpool, but it was also a difficult campaign collectively for the Reds and the former Newcastle United man still has plenty to offer.

With PSG, his versatility will be a major boost, particularly in a midfield that has had a makeshift feel to it since Pochettino's arrival with Marco Verratti deployed as an improvised No. 10 -- when fit.

Wijnaldum is not of the same creative quality as the Italian, but will fit nicely alongside Leandro Paredes while Ander Herrera, Danilo Pereira and Rafinha could find themselves moved on or repositioned.

Given that the former Liverpool man can do a bit of everything, he will likely occupy one of the two central midfield roles in the 4-2-3-1 system that Pochettino has favored so far.

Also, considering his attacking past, Wijnaldum could also fill the more advanced role when needed with Verratti often in need of backup that was previously lacking.

As far as a first move goes, this is a solid start and PSG will now be expected to build on this and ad greater quality as they build for another UEFA Champions League assault and attempt to convince Kylian Mbappe to pledge his future to the club.

Wijnaldum certainly has experience that will benefit his new team as he was part of the 2018-19 Liverpool side that won the UCL -- despite finishing second to Les Parisiens in the group.
