Schalke vs. Augsburg score, highlights: Bundesliga slide continues for David Wagner's club

Augsburg's relegation concerns appear to be fading away. So do Schalke's hopes of Europa League qualification. Augsburg hit the road to Gelsenkirchen on Sunday and took advantage of the hosts' errors, winning 3-0 in a convincing performance. The victory puts the club nine points clear of direct relegation with seven games to go. On the other side, Schalke's winless streak in the league is up to nine games. The club sits just two points back of Europa League qualification but with little hope in getting back into the race due to an anemic attack.

Schalke had 67 percent of possession in this game, but just two shots on goal to show for it. Augsburg capitalized three times on errors by the hosts to make them pay. The efficient visitors put seven of their nine shots on goal and three found the back of the net.

Weston McKennie's turnover and foul saw Eduard Lowen score the winner just six minutes in with this fantastic free kick:

After another error at the back gave Noah Sarenren Bazee the second goal, it was Venezuelan international Sergio Cordova who wrapped things up in the 91st minute by stealing the ball and finishing brilliantly.

Schalke has now scored just two goals in its last nine games, conceding 22 times as the pressure is sure to mount on manager David Wagner. With injury problems and a lack of creativity, it may get worse before it gets better. Suat Serder, arguably the team's most important player in the final third, picked up a knee injury and had to be taken off. He took a knee to the back of his own knee and could not continue in the second half.

What was once a promising season for Schalke -- which lost to Borussia Dortmund by four goals last week in the first game after the Bundesliga shutdown --  has fallen off the rails. With seven games to go, the club only faces one top-four club the rest of the way, so Schalke will have its chance to get back into a Europa League spot, but only if the group somehow dramatically improves on its poor displays.

Schalke 0, Augsburg 3 (FT)

⚽ Augsburg - Eduard Lowen (6')
⚽ Schalke - Noah Sarenren Bazee (76')
⚽ Schalke - Sergio Cordova (90+1')

Goal Augsburg! 3-0!

It's Cordova on another error from Schalke. Just a day full of mistakes. He steals the ball, goes through on goal and finishes with ease.

Goal Augsburg!

It's 2-0. Another mistake for Schalke, and Augsburg makes them pay with a terrific finish from Baze. That's got to be game.

McKennie subbed off

Weston McKennie's day ends after 73 minutes. He's taken off as Schalke looks for more in attack. Levent Mercan comes on.

Sedar is coming off

He can't continue. He is limping off, and his day is done. A tough blow for Schalke, as he was one of the few bright spots. Kutucu comes on, and he'll likely play higher up as striker. Just over a half an hour to turn this around.

Schalke has the ball but little else

Schalke continues to dominate possession, but Augsburg has 10 guys behind the ball regularly as they look to hold on. This comes as Sedar has picked up a knock and is receiving medical attention off of the pitch.

A rough start

Not the best first half for Weston McKennie and Schalke as they could be letting a return to the top six slip away. McKennie's early turnover leads to the free kick which sees Augsburg score, and there is very little on the attacking end from the hosts. So much work to be done. Will David Wagner push the right buttons in the second half?
