Tottenham vs. Liverpool score: Lucas Bergvall end Liverpool's 24-match unbeaten streak in controversial match

Liverpool's 24-match unbeaten run has come to an end in the most unlikely fashion losing 1-0 to Tottenham in the first leg of the EFL Cup semifinal behind a goal from Lucas Bergvall. With the goal, Bergvall has become the youngest player to score for Tottenham in the EFL Cup since Gareth Bale in September of 2007. Chasing their first trophy since winning the EFL Cup in 2008, Ange Postecoglou pulled out all the stops in this one starting new keeper Antonin Kinsky starting only three days after joining from Slavia Prague.

Early on in the game, Spurs midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur was stretchered off with an injury but is conscious and communicating, per the club. That led to 11 minutes of

The 21-year-old keeper did a good job protecting his makeshift defense and even the first in-stadium VAR announcement ruled out Dominic Solanke's goal in the 79th minute for being offside. It's a match that leaves much to be desired for Liverpool but Tottenham teenagers Archie Gray and Bergvall showed that the future could be bright for a Spurs team aiming for consistency. Liverpool will have plenty of time to make up the one-goal deficit at home but for Tottenham to go toe-to-toe with the Reds was quite a surprise.

History made

Up until this stage of the tournament, there was no VAR in the competition but not only did it come into effect for the semifinals but also for the first time the announcements would be delivered to the entire stadium via the on-field referee. For most of the game, this wasn't an issue but after Solanke put the ball in the back of the net late, referee Stuart Attwell had to go to the monitor where the goal was judged to be offside. He then went to announce it to more than 50,0000 unhappy Tottenham fans in London.

"We never used to debate offsides, handballs, holding in the box. Did everyone really love the announcement today? Did that give you a real buzz?" Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou said following the match.

While the transparency is appreciated for the stadium to get information at the same time, Postecoglou has a point in how the game has changed. At the moment, VAR is here to stay and Spurs will go down in history as the first team to be subjected to an in-stadium VAR announcement in English soccer.

A controversial winner

After receiving a yellow card for a challenge earlier in the match, Bergvall could've been sent off during the match for a challenge on Konstantinos Tsimikas. When the tackle went in, Liverpool were given an advantage for a period of time but no yellow was issued to Bergvall which would've seen him dismissed from the match. When the 18-year-old went on to score his goal, Tsimikas was then off the pitch recovering from the challenge.

"They played an advantage, that's why it's not a second yellow," Postecoglou said about the challenge.

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk didn't agree, believing that Bergvall should've been sent off during the controversial moment. While the challenge wasn't enough to rise to a direct red card, there was enough there that a yellow could've been issued. Liverpool will have wanted to produce more in attack but in a balanced game, you never want to see a decision like this one be what made the difference.

"Everyone can make mistakes, but in my opinion, it was quite an obvious one," Van Dijk said.

In breaking down the match, CBS Sports rules analyst Christina Unkel also agreed with Van Dijk's assessment.

"That tackle itself doesn't rise to the level of a direct red card which is only what VAR can check, and because it would've just been a yellow card and that's all the recommendation or the preferred decision would've been, VAR can't intervene," Unkel said. "So, communication needs to happen between officials on the field and the fourth official that's sitting right there giving that information to the referee.

"If you're giving an advantage, you can still come back and give the yellow card and just a heads up it's a second yellow, red. We understand the gravity of the game and what it means and sometimes as referees, we have the ability to manage the game and maybe manage a situation, but in this one, this is what we call 100% misconduct and a yellow card."

Based on that recommendation, the goal never should've happened, but for Liverpool, their focus is on the second leg. This is in no way an insurmountable advantage, just an unfortunate one when the match could've ended with a late Liverpool goal due what should have been a one-man advantage.

Worry for Liverpool?

After dropping points in the league to Manchester United in a poor performance and then following up with one of their worst performances of the season facing Tottenham, it's a small worry for Arne Slot. Liverpool did create chances, but they didn't come to Mohamed Salah and Diogo Jota due to Tottenham's defense doing their job. It's too early to worry about the Reds but with so many games in quick succession, this is a time where if other sides want to push for the title, they need to take advantage of Liverpool being the most vulnerable that they've been so far this season. This isn't a match that may hurt them in the long run but without a victory in their next league match facing Nottingham Forest -- the last Premier League team to defeat the Reds -- worry may begin to set in.

Tottenham 1, Liverpool 0 (FT)

Liverpool's unbeaten run ends at 24 from a goal from 18-year-old Lucas Bergvall via a Dominic Solanke assist. It's a 1-0 advantage for Tottenham in the EFL Cup semifinal ahead of a second leg at Anfield on Feb. 6. It was a game that had a bit of everything with Rodrigo Bentancur being stretchered off, the first in stadium VAR announcement ever in the EFL Cup to rule out a go-ahead goal for Solanke and there's an argument that Bergvall could've been sent off prior to his eventual winning goal.

Bergvall does it!

Spurs get their go ahead goal and it's via a Dominic Solanke assist. Liverpool has a right to be a little agitated with that one as Bergvall could've been sent off for a challenge on Tsimikas but instead, he's on to score what could be a winning goal.

It's just off

The celebrations will come to an end as Solanke just strayed offside prior to the pass and this match is still level 0-0 in the 79th minute of play. It still feels like there's a goal in this one before the match is up. It's the first in stadium VAR announcement in the history of the competition.

Solanke scores!!!

Against the run of play, Tottenham has the ball in the back of the net. The flag stayed down following a pass from Pedro Porro but it's going to be a tight one as this goes to VAR.

DRAGUSIN!!!

It looked like Alexander-Arnold had the go ahead goal but Dragusin was right where he needed to be before Mac Allister sent his shot wide. Kinsky goes over to thank his defender for the save as this match is heating up coming toward the close. Son will exit after this with Timo Werner entering play.

Solid debut for Kinsky so far

He's been assured with his passing and has also made four saves so far. He has only needed to make four saves in the match but limiting mistakes, it's hard to ask for more from a 21-year-old who has only been with the club for three days.

Here comes the changes

Nunez, Alexander Arnold, and Diaz are all entering for Jota, Bradley, and Gakpo. It's time for Liverpool to turn up the attacking pressure in a big way in this second half of play.

You've gotta make those

After a massive mistake from Allison, Pedro Porro had two chances to put Tottenham ahead in the match but he saw his first effort blocked and the second go off target. You can't allow Liverpool to recover from mistakes like that.

No changes after the break

Trent Alexander-Arnold was put through his paces during the half so if things don't change soon, an early change could be coming but it's also only a matter of time until someone breaks this game open.

Rodrigo Bentancur update

Following the injury to the midfielder in the first half, Tottenham has released a statement:

"We can confirm Rodrigo is conscious, talking and will go to hospital for further checks."

Time for a fullback flip?

Part of why Tottenham were able to press well is because Liverpool was wasteful with the ball at their feet. The introduction of Alexander-Arnold or Andrew Robertson could help with that in the second period of play.

More chances for both teams

As the half draws to a close, chances are being created but they haven't been true tests of either keeper yet. Spurs will want to get into half level with Liverpool turning up the pressure.

Still not much to separate these teams

There was much concern over Tottenham's defense but so far, the team has been up to the task of defending Liverpool with plenty of cover in tight areas. This has come at the expense of attacking fluidity but after conceding so many goals in recent matches, this is progress for Spurs.

Another early change

This time it's Jarell Quansah who will be replaced by Wataru Endo after picking up an injury. There should be over 10 minutes of stoppage time to come at the end of the half at this rate.

Almost a chance for Solanke

Tottenham still has the better of this match as Liverpool has been giving the ball away in midfield early on. It's a goal kick to Liverpool after the chance but Tottenham's press has been effective in the early going.

Concern for Rodrigo Bentancur

After going for a diving header following a corner kick, the stretcher is out for the midfielder while Brennan Johnson will enter to change the complexion of the attack for Tottenham. It was a lengthy stoppage while Bentancur received treatment which will need to be added on following the half. Despite the header, this is being treated as a normal substitution not a concussion substitution.

Spurs are pushing the pace

So far Tottenham has been looking for balls over the top and while the timing hasn't been there, the opportunities are. Dragusin had a great shot on target but Spurs may have picked up yet another injury as Bentancur is on the ground following a corner.

Underway

It's a measured build up from Tottenham to start off the match but it likely won't take long for this match to kick into gear as a ball over the top to Son was just off timing wise.

Prediction

Despite Tottenham's defensive issues, there aren't many teams who can stop them from scoring, especially at home. The one benefit of the current injury crisis is that less experienced players are finding their feet which will help with securing an improbable draw. Pick: Tottenham 2, Liverpool 2

All eyes on Mohamed Salah

With 18 goals and 13 assists in Premier League play, it'll be interesting to see how Tottenham looks to slow down Salah but with Cody Gakpo and Diogo Jota also in the attack, that'll be easier said than done.

Dropped or a worry?

While Trent Alexander-Arnold had a poor performance against Manchester United he finds himself on the bench to begin this clash facing Tottenham but being interviewed on the XI, manager Arne Slot downplayed it being down to performance. When Conor Bradley was injured, Alexander-Arnold and other members of the defense had to play more than usual so this rotation is down to rest according to the manger.

A debut for Tottenham

A new keeper is in, Antonin Kinsky Jr. who only joined on January 5 from Slavia Prague and now he's thrown in to face Liverpool. It's a slightly different setup for Tottenham to try and control the midfield but that'll be easier said than done against Liverpool.

Tottenham XI: Antonin Kinsky, Djed Spence, Radu Dragusin, Archie Gray, Pedro Porro, Rodrigo Bentancur, Lucas Bergvall, Yves Bissouma, Heung-min Son, Dejan Kulusevski, Dominic Solanke

Liverpool team news

Ibrahima Konate is back in contention to help Arne Slot get back to his top available defense and the timing couldn't be better with Joe Gomez out with a thigh injury. Dominik Szoboszlai is the only other player who won't be available, although changes could come to Liverpool's XI after dropping points to Machester United their last time out.

Tottenham team news

Lineups will be interesting for Tottenham as there could be a debut in the works. New keeper Antonin Kinsky Jr. has only been with the club for a few days, but the former Slavia Prague man is registered to play and with Fraser Forester recovering from an illness, he could debut in a major moment for the club. It'll be quite a challenge if the 21-year-old does debut, but after being thrown into the fire in the Czech league, he'll be ready for whatever comes his way. Richarlison is also back in training adding more depth to a front line that has been stretched to their limits as of late. The defense is still in shambles with the top three center backs all sidelined, but there's a slim chance to keep this close at home.
