Update: It appears as if CONCACAF, along with the three soccer federations, are pushing for a quick verdict from FIFA.

Now that it is known that the United States, Mexico and Canada are bidding on hosting the 2026 World Cup, many are wondering what the timeline is. When will we know if the United States and its neighbors will definitely host the biggest competition in the world?

Here is a FIFA timeline, according to the soccer governing body. 

  • Between June 2017 and December 2018: enhanced phases for bid preparation
  • January 2019 - February 2020: FIFA will evaluate the bids
  • May 2020: A final decision (vote) will be made on who wins the right to host the 2026 World Cup.

So, we are about three years away from finding out, but there is no doubt that the trio is the favorite to win the bid. As of Monday, this is the From here forward, the three federations will work together to continue planning and promoting the possibility and hope to convince FIFA that come nine years from now, the cup should return to the United States and North America for the first time since 1994.
