Jozy Altidore will be available to play vs. Belgium
The United States forward will be available to play against Belgium Tuesday.
United States forward Jozy Altidore will be available to play Tuesday against Belgium in the Round of 16 at the World Cup, the team announced via Twitter on Monday.
"Ready and available" doesn't really inspire all that much confidence -- certainly less than, say, "Jozy Altidore will start vs. Belgium" -- but it's certainly better than the alternative. Altidore has just been doing some light training with the team over the past several days, so it would be a surprise if he were to start the game Tuesday or play a substantial number of minutes.
Of course we haven't yet heard from Jurgen Klinsmann Monday, so Altidore's status may have improved significantly over the past couple of days.
Altidore hasn't played since June 16 against Ghana, when he left in the 21st minute with a strained hamstring. If he is to return to the field Tuesday against Belgium, it's hard to believe that he'd be 100 percent fit.
Still! This is exciting! The US attack has been somewhat stagnant in his absence, and it would certainly be nice to have both him and Clint Dempsey on the attack against a Belgium defense that is banged up.
