World Cup: 'Crushed' Jozy Altidore to be evaluated on Tuesday
Jozy Altidore was "crushed" after he suffered a hamstring injury in Monday's 2-1 victory over Ghana. His status for the US's game against Portugal is in doubt.
US striker Jozy Altidore injured his left hamstring chasing down a pass in Monday’s 2-1 victory over Ghana, and he’ll undergo an evaluation later on Tuesday from the team’s headquarters in Sao Paulo, a US soccer spokesman confirmed to the AP.
Altidore tried to control a lofted pass from Michael Bradley but he overextended and immediately pulled up, knowing he had injured his muscle. Altidore was on the ground for a few minutes while medical officials attended to him before he was carried off on a stretcher.
“I was sprinting and I felt something. We’ll see what happens. I was crushed. I knew right away I couldn’t continue. It was the worst feeling,” he told The Guardian.
Manager Jurgen Klinsmann replaced Altidore with forward Aron Johannsson, who made his first World Cup appearance last night.
“It was not easy to swallow, the first pill of Jozy coming off the field,” Klinsmann said. “He is very, very important to us.” The US struggled to maintain any semblance of offense after Altidore left the game.
Aside from Altidore, Clint Dempsey suffered a broken nose when he was kicked in the face from a Ghanaian defender. He told reporters that he was coughing up blood and had trouble breathing through his nose as the game went on.
Central back Matt Besler left the game with soreness in his hamstring as well. His substitution set the stage for John Brooks’ late-game heroics.
