New information about USC's 1928 national championship season
USC and legendary coach Howard Jones won their first national championship back in 1928 with a 9-0-1 record. For years the reports were that USC declined a Rose Bowl bid, allowing California to go in USC's place to face Georgia Tech. Well, late last year USC football historian Mike Glenn discovered an LA Times article that said the Trojans didn't decline a bid to play in the 1929 Rose Bowl, the Tournament of Roses actually picked a 6-1-2 California squad over USC. What the Trojans turned down was an early offer to play in the 1930 Rose Bowl, apparently offered as compensation for keeping the Pacific Coast Conference champions out of the de facto national championship game.
