South Carolina and Stanford met in the championship game a season ago, and the two inched closer to a Final Four rematch on Friday after collecting Sweet 16 wins over North Carolina and Maryland, respectively. Elsewhere in the Sweet 16, No. 10 seed Creighton became the fourth ever double-digit seed to reach the women's tournament's Elite Eight after topping No. 3 seed Iowa State.
The games themselves weren't the only source of intrigue in the Sweet 16, though. This round introduced regional sites for the first time this tournament, as teams in the Greensboro region -- South Carolina, North Carolina, Creighton and Iowa State -- played in the Greensboro Coliseum while teams in the Spokane region -- Stanford, Maryland, Texas and Ohio State -- played at the Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena.
Here's a quick recap of the all the action that took place Friday in Greensboro and Spokane.
- Aliyah Boston put on a masterful performance for South Carolina, recording 28 points -- on 8-of-13 shooting -- and 22 rebounds to power the Gamecocks to a 69-61 victory over North Carolina. South Carolina dominated the glass with Boston down low, securing 48 rebounds compared to the Tar Heels' 33. The Gamecocks will now play Creighton in the Elite Eight.
No. 2 seed Texas held off a furious comeback from No. 6 seed Ohio State, which climbed back from a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit to trail by as little as one. Longhorns forward Aaliyah Moore blocked a potential go-ahead shot with 18 seconds to go and a potential game-tying shot with one second left, erasing the Buckeyes' hopes of an upset victory. Texas is now set to play Stanford, a team it beat on the road 61-56 on Nov. 14.
No. 4 seed Maryland outscored Stanford 30-13 in the fourth quarter, but the Cardinal – which led by as much as 26 – held on for a 72-66 victory to reach their third consecutive Elite Eight. Stanford forward Cameron Brink was dominant on both ends of the floor, making six of her seven shots for 16 points to go along with eight rebounds and five blocks. The Cardinal will next play Texas, a team it lost to at home in the regular season, in the Elite Eight.
No. 10 seed Creighton continued its Cinderella run with a 76-68 upset win over No. 3 seed Iowa State, making it the fourth double-digit seed to reach the Elite Eight in the women's tournament's history. The teams were tied at 30 at the half, but the Bluejays erupted for 29 points in the third to build a lead it would hold the rest of the way. The ultimate underdog matchup now awaits Creighton: a regional final against No. 1 overall seed South Carolina.
