WWE Raw results, recap, grades: Gunther chokes out Jey Uso, regains world heavyweight championship
Gunther got his revenge after losing the title to Uso at WrestleMania 41

Jey Uso received a bona fide "WrestleMania Moment" when he defeated Gunther to win the world heavyweight championship at WrestleMania 41. Things were not as sweet for Uso on Monday night as he dropped the title back to Gunther in the main event of WWE Raw.
Uso and Gunther traded their best shots throughout the match, but Uso finally was forced into unconsciousness by a Gunther sleeper hold. The win gives Gunther his second world championship reign and ends the first world title reign of Uso's long and storied career.
Also on Raw, CM Punk challenged John Cena to a match for the undisputed WWE championship, but Cena's terms are that Punk will have to travel to Saudi Arabia for Night of Champions if he wants to go one-on-one a final time.
CBS Sports was with you all night with recaps and highlights of all the action from PHX Arena in Phoenix.
Gunther chokes out Jey Uso, regains the world heavyweight championship
World Heavyweight Championship – Gunther def. Jey Uso (c) via submission to win the title. Gunther and Uso went for something of an epic in the main event, hitting their finishers multiple times throughout the match. Down the stretch, the match broke down into a battle of sleeper holds, with Gunther locking the hold for extended times and Uso surviving only to slap the hold on Gunther in return. Finally, Gunther was able to secure the hold long enough to send Uso into unconsciousness and regain the world heavyweight championship.
It was a little bit surprising to see Seth Rollins and his crew absent from the match since Uso came in with injured ribs, seemingly making him a vulnerable champion for a Money in the Bank cash-in attempt. From a storyline perspective, Gunther is a much more difficult challenge for Rollins. Uso also was someone who had direct issues with Rollins, so it takes a bit of intrigue out of the dynamic of Rollins holding the Money in the Bank briefcase. As for the match, it felt like the ending stretch went a bit too long and they didn't hit all the notes for the type of epic for which they were trying. Still, it's hard to complain about a solid world title match -- and title change -- on a weekly TV show. Grade: B+
What else happened on WWE Raw?
- CM Punk and John Cena agreed to a match at Night of Champions. Cena ran down R-Truth and the fans before saying he had already taken out WWE's best. Punk then interrupted to call out Cena for his behavior and throw down the challenge for a match. Punk dared Cena to take the match later in the show, but Cena said the only way it would happen is if Punk followed him to Saudi Arabia.
- AJ Styles def. Chad Gable via pinfall with a Styles Clash. Styles had to overcome interference from the Creed Brothers to get the victory.
- Queen of the Ring quarterfinal match -- Roxanne Perez def. Kairi Sane, Rhea Ripley and Liv Morgan via pinfall with a roll-up on Sane. Before the match, Perez talked to Morgan to suggest working together to make sure someone from Judgment Day won. Morgan told her to stay out of the way, but the pair did frequently work together until Sane hit Morgan with an Insane Elbow. Seeing the opportunity, Perez rolled up Sane to advance in the tournament.
- Bayley attacked Becky Lynch after Lynch demanded an apology from Lyra Valkyria. After Valkyria finally walked toward the ring, Bayley jumped Lynch from behind. Lynch tried to run away but ran right into Valkyria, who sent her back into the ring with Bayley before Lynch finally made his escape.
- Ron Killings seemingly ended the R-Truth character. Killings cut a promo thanking the fans for making their voices heard after WWE released him. He then said he is not a joke or a gimmick before pulling out scissors and cutting off his hair, saying, "I am Ron Killings" and telling all of WWE to put respect on his name.
- Men's Money in the Bank quarterfinal -- Sami Zayn def. Bron Breakker, Dominik Mysterio and Penta via pinfall after a Helluva Kick on Mysterio. Speaking to his crew backstage, Rollins pointed out that Bronson Reed could win King of the Ring and go after a world title while Rollins uses the Money in the Bank contract to get the other, giving the group "absolute power." During the match, LA Knight ran in and attacked Breakker, taking him out of the match and allowing Zayn to advance to the semifinals of the tournament.
- Liv Morgan hit Nikki Bella with Oblivion. Morgan interrupted a Bella promo about WWE Evolution 2. Morgan was upset Bella didn't mention her name while talking about the top women on the roster. This led to an exchange of words before Bella left the ring. After Morgan called Bella "a reality TV diva," Bella tried to reenter the ring only for Morgan to hit her with Oblivion.
