WWE SmackDown results, recap, grades: John Cena laid out, AJ Styles hospitalized by The Bloodline
Cena finds himself at a disadvantage heading into Fastlane
John Cena and The Bloodline are on a collision course for Fastlane, but Cena is riding solo. Fastlane's planned tag team main event hit a major snag after Jimmy Uso and Solo Sikoa hospitalized AJ Styles on WWE SmackDown.
Fastlane is 15 days away and the card has three-quarters of one match booked. Expectations were that Cena and Styles would headline the show against Uso and Sikoa, but The Bloodline had other plans in mind. Divide and conquer was the name of the game as The Bloodline isolated and assaulted each of their foes.
SmackDown also featured a fantastic WWE women's championship match between Iyo Sky and Asuka, plus the upward trend of Austin Theory and Grayson Waller's new tag team.
CBS Sports was with you all night with recaps and highlights of all the action from Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona.
Cena stands and falls alone against The Bloodline
Cena kicked off the show by announcing his desire to compete in a match on Friday, his first televised bout since the Dec. 30 episode of SmackDown. Cena acknowledged his recent issues with The Bloodline and enlisted Styles to join him in the ring. After Styles came Uso and Sikoa. Notably, the brothers hit the stage together suggesting rekindled cohesion between them. The Bloodline stopped ringside, refusing to further engage with their foes.
Cena and Styles urged authority figure Adam Pearce to make the match, but Pearce insisted dealing with The Bloodline is complicated. Pearce said he would convene with The Bloodline's special counsel Paul Heyman about putting the match together.
Pearce approached The Bloodline's locker room to finalize match details with contracts in hand. Heyman agreed under the condition the tag team match was scheduled for a later date. Pearce said Cena and Styles vs. Sikoa and Uso would take place at Fastlane on Oct. 7. Uso agreed before Heyman could interject. Heyman later informed Uso that those decisions require approval from Roman Reigns. Uso played dumb, asking Heyman to update him on Reigns' decision before leaving. Sikoa told Heyman not to worry and that no one would be left standing to fight them at Fastlane. Styles was stretchered away in a neckbrace with his O.C. stablemates in tow. A frustrated Karl Anderson told Cena and Mia Yim that he'd repeatedly warned Styles not to cross The Bloodline.
Back in the ring, Heyman pointed out that Cena had signed the Fastlane contract but there was no signature from Styles. Uso disrespectfully snatched the microphone from Heyman. Uso mocked Cena, telling him it would be wise to hop into the ambulance with Styles. A defiant Cena hit the ring. Despite a strong start, the numbers soon overwhelmed Cena. Sikoa laid out the 16-time world champion with two Samoan Spikes and Uso splattered him with an Uso Splash. Uso and Sikoa signed the contract for a match against Cena at Fastlane to close the show.
SmackDown will continue to be rewarded with a high grade as long as it continues to weave a primary storyline through multiple segments with various superstars. Jimmy Uso's character is still a work in progress: groveling one moment and disrespectfully cocky the next. Still, his character arc at present is one of the most interesting and he's showing a great range. It's a tad disappointing that we won't see Cena and Styles team up, but this likely opens the door for LA Knight to unite with Cena. That is a huge coup for Knight, a bigger main event for Fastlane and a great chance for Cena to share his star power with the next generation. Grade: B+
