Bello (6-4) took the loss Friday against the Yankees, allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits and three walks over 4.2 innings. He struck out five. Bello surrendered a two-run homer to Alex Verdugo in the first inning before the Yankees tacked on two more earned runs in the fifth. It's been a tough stretch for the 25-year-old Bello, who's struggled to a 7.04 ERA over his last six starts. Overall, his ERA sits at 5.00 on the season with a 1.40 WHIP and 56:24 K:BB across 63 innings. He'll look to get back on track in his next outing, currently scheduled for next week in Toronto.... Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Stumbles against ChiSox
Bello (6-3) took the loss Saturday as the Red Sox fell 6-1 to the White Sox, giving up five runs on nine hits and three walks over 4.2 innings. He struck out two. Only two of the hits off the right-hander went for extra bases, but one of those was a grand slam by Gavin Sheets in the fifth inning. Bello has been tagged for at least three runs in five straight starts, a stretch in which he's stumbled to a 6.75 ERA, 1.69 WHIP and 24:12 K:BB over 26.2 innings. He'll look to turn things around in his next outing, which is scheduled to come at home next weekend against the Yankees.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Works into seventh
Bello did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing four runs on eight hits and three walks over 6.1 innings. He struck out five. Bello cruised through the first four in allowing only two baserunners and finished the sixth inning in line for a quality start and the win. For the first time all year, Bello was called upon to go back out for the seventh, but after recording one out, he allowed the next two runners to reach base prior to being pulled, with both runners eventually coming around to score, adversely impacting his final line. It was only the second time this year that Bello has not been involved in the decision. His next opportunity to take the hill will likely come next weekend when Boston travels to Chicago to take on the White Sox.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Improves to 6-2
Bello (6-2) earned the win Tuesday over the Orioles, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks over five innings. He struck out seven. Baltimore got to Bello early Tuesday by scoring three runs in the opening frame, before the right-hander settled in and blanked the Orioles over his subsequent four innings while allowing just one additional hit. It's the fifth win for Bello in his last six starts. His ERA sits at 4.18 through nine outings (47.1 innings) this year with a 1.18 WHIP and 44:15 K:BB. Bello's tentatively in line for a second start this week Sunday at home versus Detroit.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Earns fifth win
Bello (5-2) allowed three runs on four hits and four walks while striking out six over six innings to earn the win over the Rays on Wednesday. Bello completed six innings for the second time in eight outings this season, and he earned his second quality start in the process. The Rays scored three times in the second inning, but the Red Sox offense rallied for eight runs over the fifth and sixth frames to give Bello plenty of support. The right-hander is now at a 4.04 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 37:13 K:BB through 42.1 innings. Walks typically haven't been an outsized issue for Bello, so there's not much reason for concern that he was a little wild Wednesday. He's projected to make his next start on the road versus the Orioles.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Tagged with five runs
Bello (4-2) allowed five runs on seven hits over 4.2 innings Friday, striking out four and taking a loss against the Cardinals. Bello coughed up three home runs, including Lars Nootbaar's two-run shot in the first inning. The five runs allowed were a season high for Bello and it was also his shortest outing of the year. Entering Friday's start, he'd allowed just five earned runs over his previous 21.2 frames (2.08 ERA). Bello will carry a 3.96 ERA into his next matchup, which is lined up to come in Tampa Bay next week.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Victorious in return
Bello (4-1) picked up the win Sunday, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks over five innings against the Nationals. He struck out one. Bello picked up right where he left off before going on the IL with a lat injury, tallying a third straight win and yielding fewer than three earned runs for a fourth consecutive outing. The two runs charged against Bello came in the fourth when Eddie Rosario swatted a two-run home run. Despite the long ball, Bello was extremely efficient, getting through five innings on 68 pitches. Bello's restrictions should lighten throughout his next few starts, beginning with a road bout with the Cardinals in St. Louis.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Returning Sunday
Bello (lat) said Tuesday that he will return from the 15-day injured list to start Sunday's game against the Nationals, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports. Bello made a rehab appearance Tuesday at Double-A Portland, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits and two walks while striking out five batters across 2.2 innings. Despite his unremarkable performance, the right-hander said he came away from the start without any pain and is ready to return to Boston's rotation. Bello holds a 3.04 ERA and 1.05 WHIP across 26.2 innings so far this year.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Making rehab start Tuesday
Bello (lat) will begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Portland on Tuesday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. Bello resumed mound work this week as he comes back from right lat tightness and has now been cleared for game action. He's missed just two weeks of action, so Bello may need just the one rehab start if all goes well. That sets him up to return as soon as May 12 against the Nationals.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Throws bullpen session
Bello (lat) threw a bullpen session Tuesday, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports. It's his first time throwing off a mound since he was shut down last week with right lat tightness. Bello could throw a two-inning simulated game next, with a rehab outing potentially being on the docket for next Tuesday. If Bello needs just one rehab start, he could be in line to return from the 15-day injured list as soon as May 12.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Placed on IL with lat tightness
The Red Sox placed Bello on the 15-day injured list Wednesday with right lat tightness. Manager Alex Cora said that Bello felt discomfort following his most recent start Friday, but the team is optimistic the right-hander will be ready to return after the minimum 15 days, per Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe, The Red Sox will move Kutter Crawford up a day in the pitching schedule to start Thursday's series finale in Cleveland on regular rest.... Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Nabs win in first quality start
Bello (3-1) picked up the win Friday, scattering one hit and two walks over six scoreless innings in an 8-1 rout of the Pirates. He struck out seven. Bryan Reynolds made it to third base in the first inning after a walk and an error by Ceddanne Rafaela, but he was the only Pittsburgh runner to get past second against Bello. The right-hander retired the final 11 batters he faced in a dominant outing as he recorded his first quality start of 2024. He'll take a 3.04 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 26:7 K:BB through 26.2 innings into his next start, which lines up to come in Cleveland next week.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Fans eight in win
Bello (2-1) picked up the win Sunday, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks over 5.1 innings against the Angels. He struck out eight. Bello nearly doubled his season strikeout total Sunday, punching out eight batters after entering the game with 11 total strikeouts through his first three starts. While he surrendered a solo home run to Brandon Drury in the second inning, Bello finished with two earned runs or less for the third time in 2024. The 25-year-old righty is tentatively slated to pitch Friday against the Pirates.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Allows four in no-decision
Bello did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing four runs on five hits and a walk over five innings against Oakland. He struck out six. All four of the runs charged to Bello came on a pair of two-run homers, one in the second inning off the bat of Shea Langeliers followed by a JJ Bleday blast in the third. The 24-year-old Bello's now allowed six earned runs through his first 10 innings this season after going 12-11 with a 4.24 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 132:45 K:BB last year. He's currently lined up to face Baltimore in the Red Sox home opener next Tuesday.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Named Opening Day starter
Bello has been named the Red Sox' Opening Day starter. He was the pick over Nick Pivetta, who will start the second game of the season. It's been an eventful month for Bello, who agreed to a six-year, $55 million contract extension earlier this month and who now garners the first Opening Day start of his career. The 24-year-old will take on the Mariners in Seattle on March 28.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Rough spring marches on
Bello allowed four runs on six hits and two walks while striking out one over three innings in Tuesday's spring start against the Cardinals. Bello hit his goal for the day in throwing 65 pitches, but manager Alex Cora described the outing as "erratic" to Julian McWilliams of The Boston Globe. The 24-year-old right-hander has a 6.75 ERA over three Grapefruit League starts. One area of focus this spring is being better against lefties, who combined for an .883 OPS against him in 2023. To that end, he's implemented a cutter that should get in on their hands, and he's also sculpted a new four-seamer.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Brayan Bello: In mix for Opening Day
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Bello is one of two starters being considered for Opening Day, Julian McWilliams of The Boston Globe reports. Nick Pivetta is also a candidate to start Boston's season opener in Seattle. Given that the Red Sox just inked Bello to a six-year contract extension, it makes sense that he's in line for a big role in 2024. Bello was the team's best starter for much of last season before tiring in September, when a sub-4.00 ERA ballooned to 4.24. In two Grapefruit League starts, the 24-year-old right-hander has allowed one run on five hits while striking out five over five innings.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Mixed bag second time out
Bello allowed two runs on one hit and one walk while striking out two over three innings in Saturday's spring start against the Nationals. The right-hander also hit two batters. Bello, making his second Grapefruit League start, sandwiched two perfect innings around a funky second in which he walked a batter and plunked two others. He admitted to Ian Browne of MLB.com that his mechanics went awry during the second frame. Bello has allowed just one hit through two spring outings as he makes a bid to be Boston's Opening Day starter.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Breaks out slider
Bello threw his slider during a live batting practice session Thursday, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports. Adding a slider was a point of emphasis for Bello during the winter. "I felt more comfortable with that pitch," Bello said. "I feel like I can throw it in any count. [Thursday] in live BP, I used it and felt really good about it. So it was a good offseason for that pitch." The slider could be a good third pitch to go with a filthy sinker and changeup. The right-hander said he also plans to use a four-seamer outside the zone to elicit chase. Additionally, the 24-year-old worked on his lower half and back during the offseason, hoping not to wear down over the course of the season. Bello hit a wall late in 2023, losing his final three starts, including the final two outings in which he allowed 13 runs over nine innings. That brought his overall record to 12-11 and swelled his ERA from 3.68 to 4.24.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Raked by Rays
Bello (12-11) took the loss Wednesday, coughing up five runs on nine hits and two walks over six innings as the Red Sox were downed 5-0 by the Rays. He struck out three. The Boston offense gave him no support, but Bello was far from sharp himself, tossing 62 of 100 pitches for strikes and serving up homers to Josh Lowe in the second inning and Isaac Paredes in the sixth. The 24-year-old right-hander, whose last win came Sept. 10, wraps up his first full big-league campaign with a 4.24 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 132:45 K:BB through 157 innings, and he figures to be a big part of the team's rotation plans in 2024....
