Gray (elbow) is scheduled to make a rehab start Friday with Double-A Harrisburg, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports. The 26-year-old opened his rehab assignment with Single-A Fredericksburg over the weekend and threw 43 pitches across three innings. Gray will continue to build up his workload in the minors, and manager Dave Martinez said up to five rehab starts could be necessary before the right-hander rejoins the Nationals.... See More ... Nationals' Josiah Gray: Gives up three runs in rehab start
Gray (elbow) struck out two while allowing three earned runs on three hits and one walk across three innings Sunday in a rehab start for Single-A Fredericksburg. Gray tossed 43 pitches (26 strikes) in the outing, his first at any level since landing on the 15-day injured list April 9 with a right flexor strain. He's expected to shift his rehab assignment to Double-A Harrisburg during the upcoming week, and Gray will likely require an additional start in the minors after that before making his return from the IL.... Nationals' Josiah Gray: Throwing 50-55 pitches in rehab
Gray (elbow) will throw 50-55 pitches during a rehab start with Single-A Fredericksburg on Sunday, Bobby Blanco of MASNSports.com reports. Gray got up to 76 pitches during a live BP session Tuesday but will have a smaller workload in his first rehab appearance. If all goes well Sunday, the right-hander will head to Double-A Harrisburg for another rehab start. Gray will likely need at least one more outing after the start at Double-A , making late June a feasible timeline for his return.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Josiah Gray: Rehab assignment up next
Nationals manager Dave Martinez said Wednesday that Gray (elbow) has been cleared to begin a rehab assignment, and the first start is likely to come Sunday with Single-A Fredericksburg, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports. The 24-year-old righty made just two starts this season before he landed on the injured list with an elbow strain, but he's now entering the final stage of his rehab program. Gray is expected to throw about four innings during his first outing, and he'll likely need several appearances in the minors before rejoining Washington's rotation.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Josiah Gray: Could begin rehab assignment soon
Gray (elbow) could be cleared to begin a rehab assignment if a live batting practice session Tuesday goes well, Spencer Nusbaum of The Washington Post reports. Gray threw 76 pitches in a live BP last week and is slated to throw around 50 pitches in Tuesday's session as he continues to ramp back up. As long as he comes out of Tuesday's throwing session with no concerns, he'll likely be sent to a minor-league affiliate. Gray has been out since early April with a right flexor strain, but because he's already fairly stretched out, his rehab assignment might not last more than one or two starts.... See More ... Nationals' Josiah Gray: Throws live bullpen session
Gray (elbow) threw 76 pitches in a live batting practice session Thursday, Bobby Blanco of MASN Sports reports. Gray mixed in his offspeed and breaking pitches more frequently and increased his pitch count by 26 pitches compared to his first session. He's expected to stay on a five-day rotation, lining him up to throw again Tuesday. Following Tuesday's session, he's expected to progress to the next step of his recovery, presumably a rehab assignment.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Josiah Gray: Throwing again Saturday
Gray (elbow) will throw a two-inning live batting practice Saturday, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports. Gray continues to recover from a flexor strain in his right elbow that has kept him out of action since April 4. His session Saturday is the next step in his throwing program, and if all goes well, the Nationals could look to send the 26-year-old right-hander on a rehab assignment.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Josiah Gray: Not yet throwing breaking balls
Gray (elbow) threw 35 pitches Friday in a bullpen session at Fenway Park, all fastballs, Bobby Blanco of MASNSports.com reports. The right-hander has been sidelined since April 4 due to a flexor strain in his elbow. Gray is slowly building up in bullpen sessions, and the Nationals haven't indicated yet when he might begin a rehab assignment, but he'll need to start ramping things up quickly if he's going to return to the big-league rotation before the end of May.... Nationals' Josiah Gray: Throws from 75 feet
Gray (elbow) played catch from 75 feet Tuesday, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports. The right-hander is in the process of ramping up his throwing program after a brief shutdown period due to a flexor strain. Gray should soon progress to long toss before returning to mound work. He likely won't be able to rejoin Washington's rotation until at least mid-May.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Josiah Gray: Resumes playing catch
Nationals manager Dave Martinez said Friday that Gray resumed playing catch from 60 feet last week, MLB.com reports. Though the fact that Gray is no longer shut down from throwing is an encouraging sign after he landed on the 15-day injured list April 9 with a right elbow flexor strain, the 26-year-old still has several more checkpoints to hit in his rehab program before he'll be ready to rejoin the Washington rotation. He's without a clear timeline for a return from the IL, but Gray appears safe to rule out from being activated before the end of April.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Josiah Gray: Lands on IL with flexor strain
Gray was placed on the 15-day injured list by the Nationals on Tuesday, retroactive to April 6, with a right flexor strain, Bobby Blanco of MASNSports.com reports. It's been a nightmarish start to the season for Gray. He has been tagged for 13 runs over 8.1 innings in his first two starts and now will miss, at minimum, the next couple weeks with an injury to his pitching arm. Gray had been slated to start Tuesday in San Francisco, but that responsibility now falls to Joan Adon.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Josiah Gray: Loses second straight game
Gray (0-2) took the loss against Pittsburgh on Thursday, allowing six runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out three batters over 4.1 innings. Gray gave up seven runs over four innings in a season-opening loss to the Reds last Thursday, and he was only slightly better in his second start, which also ended in defeat. The right-hander at least kept the ball in the park after allowing two homers in his first outing, but he put far too many batters on the basepaths and didn't have his strikeout stuff working to help him get out of trouble. Gray had a modest breakout campaign last year with a career-best 3.91 ERA and his first trip to the All-Star Game, but the underlying metrics weren't strong, and his performance through two games this season justifies his placement on the waiver wire in most standard fantasy leagues.... Nationals' Josiah Gray: Rocked by Reds
Gray (0-1) took the loss after he lasted four innings and allowed seven runs on eight hits and two walks Thursday against Cincinnati. He struck out six. Gray got off to a rocky start to the new campaign, getting tagged by Nick Martini for home runs in the second and third innings as part of the abbreviated start. Although Gray posted a 3.91 ERA last season compared to a 5.02 ERA in 2022, Thursday's outing paired with an iffy spring makes his 2024 prospects seem bleak. He's tentatively scheduled to toe the rubber next against the Pirates.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Josiah Gray: Tabbed for Opening Day
Manager Dave Martinez on Sunday named Gray the Nationals' starter for Opening Day against the Reds on March 28, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports. Gray has 12 strikeouts over 7.1 innings during Grapefruit League play but has also allowed six runs and issued five walks. The 26-year-old posted a career-best 3.91 ERA last season, though his 1.46 WHIP and 4.5 BB/9 were less encouraging. Nonetheless, he'll start Opening Day for Washington, with Patrick Corbin set to take the mound in Game 2.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Josiah Gray: Racking up Ks
Gray struck out five and walked two over three innings in Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Red Sox, allowing one run on two hits. That's now 10 strikeouts in five innings for Gray to begin the spring, and the right-hander fanned Trevor Story and Triston Casas twice each during Saturday's outing. His strikeout rate sagged to 20.5 percent last season, down from 23.7 percent in 2022, so Gray will need to get more swing-and-miss out of his arsenal if he's going to take another step forward in his development. The Nationals are counting on the 26-year-old to be one of the pillars of their rotation, but as yet he hasn't put it all together in the majors, with his career-best 3.91 ERA last year masking a 1.46 WHIP and 4.93 FIP.... Nationals' Josiah Gray: Fans five to kick off spring
Gray gave up two hits over two scoreless innings in Monday's Grapefruit League game against the Mets. He struck out five without walking a batter. It was an impressive start to the exhibition schedule for Gray, who was facing a New York lineup anchored by Pete Alonso and Francisco Lindor along with a handful of top prospects like Luisangel Acuna and Drew Gilbert. Gray still needs to demonstrate improved control and command to become a reliable fantasy asset, so the lack of walks Monday might be more important for his 2024 outlook than the Ks.... See More ... Nationals' Josiah Gray: Earns eighth win
Gray (8-12) earned the win Wednesday, allowing one run on five hits and three walks over five innings against the White Sox. He struck out four. Gray allowed just one run on the afternoon despite allowing the leadoff man to reach in three of his five innings. The right-hander was also gifted with plenty of run support early, helping him cruise to his eighth win of the season and his first since July 22. Gray came into the game having lost each of his last four decisions (spanning seven starts) but he's now allowed three runs or fewer in three consecutive outings.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Josiah Gray: Season-high 10 strikeouts in loss
Gray (7-12) took the loss Thursday, allowing two runs on five hits over 6.1 innings against the Pirates. He struck out 10 and did not walk a batter. The right-hander struck out six of the first 10 batters he faced but was victimized twice by long balls, while Washington's offense was getting shut down by Mitch Keller. It was just the second time in Gray's last seven starts that he made it through six frames, while the 10 strikeouts marked his season high. However, he has lost his last four decisions and six of his last seven overall (spanning 11 starts).... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Josiah Gray: Returning to rotation Thursday
Gray is scheduled to return to the Washington rotation for a start Thursday against the Pirates at PNC Park. The right-hander will return to the mound for the first time since Sept. 3 after he found himself as the odd man out of the Nationals' six-man rotation last week, when Washington played five games in a seven-day stretch. Rather than making Gray available out of the bullpen, the Nationals used the pair of off days last week to give the 25-year-old right-hander an extended breather after he had gone 0-3 with a 8.49 ERA, 1.93 WHIP and 20:21 K:BB in 23.1 innings over his last six starts. Gray isn't believed to be nursing an injury and should be in store for a normal workload in his return to the rotation Thursday.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Josiah Gray: Goes four innings vs. Miami
Gray did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing three runs on four hits and four walks over four innings against the Marlins. He struck out two. Gray's struggles continued early Sunday as he allowed three runs in the opening inning, including two on a pair of bases-loaded walks. While the 25-year-old Gray ultimately blanked the Marlins over his final three innings, his ERA is now up to 8.49 over his last five starts. Overall, he's 7-11 with a 4.13 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 122:75 K:BB across 27 starts (141.2 innings) this season. Gray's currently in line to face Pittsburgh in his next outing, though the Nats could elect to give him some extra rest between starts.... See More ... See Less
