  • Athletics' Max Schuemann: Settling in as everyday shortstop

Schuemann will start at shortstop and bat seventh in Monday's game against the Astros.

Schuemann will pick up his sixth consecutive start after going 5-for-19 with a home run, two doubles, two walks, four RBI and three runs over Oakland's previous five games. He looks poised to operate as the Athletics' primary shortstop while Darell Hernaiz is on the injured list with a severe ankle sprain.

  • Athletics' Max Schuemann: Clears bases with timely double

Schuemann went 1-for-4 with a three-run double in a win over the Mariners on Saturday.

The rookie helped break the game open with his eighth-inning bases-loaded double, driving in all three runners to expand a razor-thin 2-1 lead for the Athletics. The clutch two-bagger extended what has been a solid stretch of offensive performances for Schuemann, who now boasts a .286 average and .423 on-base percentage over the 26 plate appearances covering his last seven games.

  • Athletics' Max Schuemann: Productive in twin bill

Schuemann went 3-for-7 with a double, two walks and two runs during Wednesday's doubleheader against the Rangers.

Schuemann did the majority of his damage in the nightcap, when he got on base thrice via a pair of singles and a walk and came around to score twice. The rookie has now reached safely in five consecutive games, a stretch during which he 's lifted his batting average and on-base percentage to .216 and .348, respectively.

  • Athletics' Max Schuemann: Sitting in second straight

Schuemann is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Pirates.

After making five consecutive starts at the keystone and going 2-for-13, Schuemann now finds himself on the bench for the second game in a row, both of which have come against right-handed starting pitchers. He looks as though he'll play second fiddle to Abraham Toro at second base while Zack Gelof (oblique) is on the injured list.

  • Athletics' Max Schuemann: Garners fourth straight start

Schuemann will start at second base and bat sixth in Sunday's game against the Orioles.

Schuemann has now occupied the keystone in four straight contests and could be the preferred option over Abraham Toro at the position while Zack Gelof (oblique) is on the injured list. The 26-year-old rookie has done little to build much job security to this point, however, as he enters Sunday's contest with a .118/.250/.294 slash line across 20 plate appearances on the season.

  • Athletics' Max Schuemann: Hits first homer, adds steal

Schuemann went 1-for-2 with a home run and a stolen base in Saturday's loss to the Guardians.

Schuemann's fifth-inning blast off of Logan Allen represented his first major-league hit and home run. He also added the first stolen base of his career later in the game after reaching on a walk. Schuemann was making his third start at a third different position (third base) Saturday and all three starts have come against lefties. He's unlikely to make a fantasy impact.

  • Athletics' Max Schuemann: Added to roster

The Athletics selected Schuemann's contract from Triple-A Las Vegas on Thursday.

Schuemann, 26, slashed .276/.402/.430 with 10 homers and 23 steals between Double-A Midland and Triple-A Las Vegas last season. He's played every position other than pitcher and catcher in the minors and would be making his major-league debut if he gets into a game.

  • Athletics' Max Schuemann: Reassigned to minor-league camp

The Athletics reassigned Schuemann to minor-league camp Sunday.

Schuemann was having an impressive spring, slashing .321/.412/.429 with a homer across 34 plate appearances in 15 games. Despite this, the 27-year-old was not expected to make the Opening Day roster due the presence of outfielders JJ Bleday and Miguel Andujar.

  • Athletics' Max Schuemann: Impressive spring persists Saturday

Schuemann went 1-for-2 with an RBI sacrifice fly and a run in a Cactus League loss to the Brewers on Saturday, pushing his spring average to .321.

After opening Cactus League play 1-for-10 over his first six exhibitions, Schuemann's bat has come alive. The 26-year-old has gone on to hit safely in seven of his next eight games, going 8-for-21 with two RBI, two walks and six runs over that span. However, despite the strong spring, Schuemann doesn't make Martin Gallegos of MLB.com's latest Opening Day roster projection due to the presence of hot-hitting reserve outfielders JJ Bleday and Miguel Andujar. If Gallegos' projection proves accurate, it likely equates to a return to Triple-A Las Vegas to start the 2024 campaign for Schuemann, who slashed .277/.402/.429 with the Aviators across 103 games last season.

  • Athletics' Max Schuemann: Surging with Aviators

Schuemann, who went 3-for-3 with an RBI double, a two-run home run, a walk and an additional run in Triple-A Las Vegas' win over Salt Lake on Tuesday, owns a .304 average and .905 OPS across 60 games with the Aviators this season.

The 26-year-old is up to 14 doubles, two triples, six homers, 29 RBI and 11 stolen bases over 256 plate appearances. Schuemann put together solid offensive stints at Double-A Midland in 2021 and 2022 as well, and although the hitter-friendly environment of the Pacific Coast League is undoubtedly helping boost his current numbers, it's possible he's deemed worthy of a promotion to the big-league club before season's end.
