  • Pirates' Ke'Bryan Hayes: Resuming activities Monday

Pirates director of sports medicine Todd Tomcyzk said Friday that Hayes (back) will resume baseball activities Monday, Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

The plan is for Hayes to play catch and field grounders Monday before progressing to swinging a bat Tuesday. Hayes landed on the injured list last weekend with a back injury which had been nagging at him for a while, but it sounds like he's feeling better after a little rest. He could have a shot to make it back before the end of the month if all goes well.

  • Pirates' Michael Taylor: Not in Friday's lineup

Taylor is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Cubs, Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Taylor started the previous four games but will receive a day off after he went 2-for-13 with a double, two runs and five strikeouts during that stretch. Jack Suwinski will shift to center field Friday while Connor Joe starts in right.

  • Pirates' Aroldis Chapman: Returns to mound

Chapman (finger) struck out two and did not allow a baserunner in a scoreless inning to earn a hold Thursday against the Cubs.

Chapman was removed from Sunday's appearance with a cracked fingernail, but the issue was never expected to require a long-term absence. After beginning the season as the Pirates' primary setup man, Chapman appeared in the seventh inning Thursday while Colin Holderman followed him in the eighth frame.

  • Pirates' Edward Olivares: Clubs two-run homer

Olivares went 2-for-4 in Thursday's win over the Cubs with a double, a two-run homer and two runs scored.

Olivares put the Pirates on the board with a two-run blast off Justin Steele in the top of the first and later added a double in the sixth before coming around to score on a sacrifice fly from Yasmani Grandal. The home run was Olivares' fifth of the season and he's now hit safely in three straight games. It also marked only the second time this season he scored two runs in a contest.

  • Pirates' David Bednar: Nails down ninth save

Bednar picked up the save against the Cubs on Thursday, pitching a perfect ninth inning while striking out one.

Bednar entered the game to protect a one-run lead in the bottom of the ninth and needed only eight pitches to retire the side and secure his ninth save of the season. The right-handed reliever has converted each of his last eight save attempts and carries a 2.57 ERA in May to go along with a 6:2 K:BB. Bednar has also recorded at least one strikeout in three straight appearances and in six of seven appearances overall this month.

  • Pirates' Jared Jones: Collects third win

Jones (3-4) picked up the win over the Cubs on Thursday, allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out seven over six innings.

Jones allowed hits in four of his six innings of work, including a solo homer off the bat of Ian Happ to lead off the second. However, the right-hander still managed to log his third consecutive quality start while also posting at least seven strikeouts for the seventh time in nine outings this season. Jones produced 15 swings and misses on the night, though his seven hits allowed marked a season high. He's won just two of his last six decisions despite carrying a 2.89 ERA on the campaign.

  • Pirates' Jared Triolo: Out of lineup Thursday

Triolo isn't in the Pirates' lineup Thursday versus the Cubs.

Triolo will begin the day on the bench amid his recent struggles. After going 0-for-3 on Wednesday, he has just two hits in his last 39 plate appearances. The third baseman has been starting in the absence of Ke'Bryan Hayes, but Nick Gonzales will slide over from second to third Thursday. Alika Williams joins the lineup at second and will bat ninth.

  • Pirates' Domingo German: Makes season debut

German allowed one run while striking out four over four innings in his season debut Tuesday with Single-A Bradenton.

It's his first game action since last July, as the Yankees placed German on the restricted list in August following a clubhouse incident. He became a free agent after being outrighted off New York's 40-man roster and eventually signed a minor-league contract with the Pirates in March. German could eventually become a rotation option for Pittsburgh later this season, but it's unlikely to be anytime soon.

  • Pirates' Martin Perez: Done in by long ball

Perez (1-3) took the loss Wednesday against the Brewers, allowing nine runs on 11 hits and a walk over five innings. He struck out four.

All nine of Milwaukee's runs against Perez came via the home run -- the left-hander gave up a career-high five long balls after not allowing more than one in any of his first eight starts this year. It was a brutal day for the veteran left-hander, whose ERA is up to 4.86 with a 1.50 WHIP and 40:14 K:BB through 50 innings this season. Perez will look to get back on track in his next outing, currently slated for early next week at home versus San Francisco.
