Brewers' Colin Rea: Nabs win as bulk reliever
Rea (4-2) notched the win Saturday in Boston, yielding two runs on three hits and three walks over 5.2 frames. He recorded two strikeouts.
Jared Koenig opened and did yeoman's work, retiring all four batters he faced, including three via strikeout. Rea then took over and put up a bunch of zeros himself before the Red Sox finally broke through in the seventh, scoring a couple runs on three hits. The right-hander had come into this one with a 7.20 ERA over his last three outings, which might be why the Brewers elected to use an opener to switch things up. Rea is likely to face the Cubs next, although whether it will be as a traditional starter or bulk reliever again is unclear.

Brewers' Colin Rea: Following opener
Rea will follow opener Jared Koenig out of the bullpen Saturday versus Boston, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.
Rea was originally slated to start Saturday's contest, but the Brewers will instead opt to use Koenig as an opener for the second game in a row. The 33-year-old Rea got off to a hot start in 2024, but he has given up 12 earned runs in 15 innings across his last three starts.

Rea received a rude welcome with a four-run first inning by the Astros. He then managed to keep them in check until yielding another run in the fifth. Over his last three starts, Rea has registered a 7.20 ERA and has failed to complete five innings in two of those outings. The rough stretch has pushed his ERA from 2.67 to 4.07 through 48.2 frames. Rea has been tagged with a loss in two straight starts after beginning the year 3-0. His next start is expected to be in Boston next weekend.

Brewers' Colin Rea: Loses despite quality start
Rea (3-1) allowed three runs on six hits and a walk over six innings Monday, striking out five and taking a loss against the Pirates.
Rea was greeted with a two-run homer by Jack Suwinski in the first inning but held the Pirates to just one run over his next five frames. It was Rea's third quality start of the year but he was handed his first loss. He also generated a season-high 12 whiffs, including five via the splitter. After picking up victories in his first two starts this season, Rea wasn't able to add to his season total Sunday. Rea was uncertain to even make his start Sunday after he was reported to have been battling a stomach virus the day prior but turned in another successful outing. Rea's stuff hasn't been flashy by any means, but he's been an important piece to this rotation that does not have much depth. Brewers' Colin Rea: Re-signs with Milwaukee
The Brewers re-signed Rea to a one-year contract Thursday with a club option for 2025, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.
Rea hadn't enjoyed much major-league success prior to the 2023 season, but he proved to be a valuable -- and flexible -- member of the Milwaukee pitching staff while registering a 4.55 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 110:38 K:BB in 22 starts and four relief appearances covering 124.2 innings. The 33-year-old right-hander should be a strong consideration for the Opening Day rotation in 2024.

Brewers' Colin Rea: Gets spot on wild-card roster
Rea has made the Brewers' roster for their NL Wild Card Series matchup against the Diamondbacks.
The 33-year-old is essentially replacing Brandon Woodruff, who is in danger of missing the entire postseason because of a capsular injury in his right shoulder.
