Player Outlook
After being limited to 96 games in 2022, Tyler O'Neill's stated goal last offseason was to tailor his workouts to prevent future injury. It didn't work, as O'Neill played just 72 contests in 2023 due to back, knee and foot problems. When on the field, the 28-year-old's production sagged to just a .715 OPS and nine homers in 266 plate appearances. O'Neill's plate discipline actually trended in a positive direction for the second straight year, but his quality of contact also dropped off again so perhaps he's best off returning to the ultra aggressiveness he displayed during his breakout 2021 campaign. He was traded to Boston this offseason, which not only signals a more secure role but a major upgrade in home park factors. Durability remains a significant concern, but he should produce for fantasy managers while healthy.

  • Red Sox's Tyler O'Neill: Sent for imaging on knee

O'Neill has been sent back to Boston to receive imaging on his sore right knee, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports. Red Sox manager Alex Cora indicated that it's more for peace of mind than a worry that O'Neill is dealing with a significant injury, but it's still not an encouraging development. O'Neill is missing a third straight start Tuesday, and it's safe to assume he won't play in the series finale in Baltimore on Wednesday, either. The Red Sox will begin a homestand Thursday versus the Tigers.

  • Red Sox's Tyler O'Neill: Remains out Tuesday

O'Neill (knee) remains out of the lineup for Tuesday's contest versus the Orioles. O'Neill had said previously that he was aiming to return to action Tuesday after missing two games with a sore right knee, but he'll instead begin a third straight contest on the bench. Rob Refsnyder is occupying the designated hitter spot for the Red Sox on Tuesday.

  • Red Sox's Tyler O'Neill: Targeting return Tuesday

O'Neill (knee), who is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Brewers, is expected to remain on the bench for Monday's series opener in Baltimore before returning to the starting nine for Tuesday's game versus the Orioles, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. The Red Sox don't view O'Neill's sore right knee as a major concern and think he'll need to miss just two starts due to the issue before returning to the starting nine as either a designated hitter or corner outfielder. Garrett Cooper will enter the lineup in O'Neill's stead Sunday, occupying the DH spot and batting third.

O'Neill (knee) won't be available for Sunday's game against the Brewers, Peter Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. O'Neill was removed from Saturday's 6-3 loss after seven innings with soreness in his right knee. He admitted to grinding through the injury; the outfielder is 11-for-73 with 36 strikeouts over the last 20 games. The Red Sox are hopeful that a day off will be all that O'Neill needs to recover from the injury before the team opens up a three-game set in Baltimore on Monday.

  • Red Sox's Tyler O'Neill: Day-to-day with knee injury

O'Neill is receiving treatment for the right knee injury that forced him from Saturday's game versus the Brewers and is considered day-to-day, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. O'Neill revealed that the knee has actually been bothering him for a while, and the injury didn't happen on a particular play Saturday. He conceded that it's probably affected his swing, and his nine strikeouts over his last three contests would seem to back up that assessment. O'Neill may sit out at least Sunday's game, but there's no talk just yet of him needing an injured list stint.

O'Neill was removed from Saturday's game against the Brewers due to right knee soreness, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports. Rob Refsnyder entered as O'Neill's replacement in the eighth inning and could be in line to start if the 28-year-old is forced to miss time.
