Orioles' Cole Irvin: Fans six in victory
Irvin (5-2) picked up the win in Monday's 11-3 victory over Boston, scattering four hits and three walks over five innings. He struck out six and did not allow a run.
The 30-year-old southpaw was sharp, not allowing an extra-base hit and matching his season best with six strikeouts. The three walks were uncharacteristic for Irvin, who allowed just one free pass over his previous 24.1 innings pitched. After allowing nine earned runs over his first two starts of the season, Irvin has yielded just seven earned runs over his past eight starts, good for a 1.55 ERA in that span. He will look to keep it rolling in his next start, currently scheduled for this weekend in Tampa.

Orioles' Cole Irvin: Locked in to start Monday
Irvin will start Monday's game against the Red Sox in Baltimore, Danielle Allentuck of TheBaltimoreBanner.com reports.
As expected, Irvin will draw back into the rotation as a replacement for John Means (forearm), who was placed on the 15-day injured list Thursday. Though he made his last two appearances in relief, Irvin shouldn't be in line for any major workload restrictions Monday after he covered 3.1 innings out of the bullpen last Wednesday against the Cardinals. Over his prior seven starts with Baltimore this season, Irvin went 4-1 with a 2.90 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 28:8 K:BB in 40.1 innings.

Orioles' Cole Irvin: Stuck with loss Wednesday
Irvin (4-2) allowed five runs (three earned) on six hits and struck out two without walking a batter over 3.1 innings to take the loss Wednesday versus the Cardinals.
Irvin was called upon for a long-relief outing after John Means (elbow) exited following a rain delay. The severity of Means' injury is unknown at this time, but if it requires a stint on the injured list, Irvin has a clear path back to the rotation after making his last two appearances out of the bullpen. Irvin has pitched well this season with a 3.15 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 30:8 K:B over 45.2 innings through nine appearances (seven starts). Means' spot in the rotation is slated for a home start versus the Red Sox next week, and Irvin's appearance Wednesday would put him on schedule to step into that spot, if necessary.

Irvin will re-enter the Orioles' rotation following the injury to John Means (forearm), Matt Weyrich of The Baltimore Sun reports.
Each of Irvin's last two appearances have come in relief, but he's been terrific in seven starts this season, collecting a 2.90 ERA and 28:8 K:BB over 40.1 innings of work. Orioles' Cole Irvin: Works in relief Sunday
Irvin appeared out of the bullpen in Sunday's 6-3 win over the Mariners, collecting his first hold of the season while working around one hit and allowing no walks in two scoreless innings.
Despite posting a 2.90 ERA while starting in his first seven appearances of the season, Irvin was moved to the bullpen over the weekend while the Orioles were able to get by with a shortened rotation due to off days last Tuesday and Thursday. According to Jacob Calvin Meyer of The Baltimore Sun, manager Brandon Hyde suggested that Irvin won't be a regular member of the bullpen moving forward, as the Orioles plan to move back to a six-man rotation while they're now in the midst of a stretch of 30 games in 31 days. Per Jake Rill of MLB.com, Irvin isn't scheduled to start any of the Orioles' remaining five games this week, but the southpaw could re-enter the rotation next week or the week after.

Orioles' Cole Irvin: Just misses quality start Friday
Irvin (4-1) picked up the win Friday, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk over 5.2 innings in a 4-2 victory over the Diamondbacks. He struck out six.
The southpaw was sharp and had given up only a solo shot to Ketel Marte heading into the sixth inning, but Irvin got the hook after 95 pitches (62 strikes) with runners on first and second and two outs. Albert Suarez then promptly gave up a single to let one of the inherited runners score, but the O's bullpen took care of business the rest of the way. Irvin generated 30 called or swinging strikes as he won his fourth straight start, and after a bumpy beginning to the season he's posted a 1.19 ERA, 0.79 WHIP and 21:3 K:BB in 30.1 innings over his last five outings. He'll look to keep rolling in his next trip to the mound, which is scheduled to come at home next week against the Blue Jays.

Irvin (3-1) earned the win Friday over the Reds, allowing just two hits while striking out four over 6.1 scoreless innings.
Irvin continued a dominant run in which he's won three consecutive starts while extending his scoreless streak to 20.2 innings. The 30-year-old left-hander's ERA is down to 2.86 with a 1.07 WHIP and 22:7 K:BB across six starts (34.2 innings) this season. Irvin will look to keep rolling in his next outing, currently scheduled for next week against Arizona.

Orioles' Cole Irvin: Sticks in rotation
Irvin is slated to start Friday's game against the Reds in Cincinnati, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports.
The Orioles returned Kyle Bradish (forearm) and John Means (elbow) from the 15-day injured list this week, but with Grayson Rodriguez (shoulder) landing on the IL on Wednesday, Baltimore will only have to move one starter out of the rotation to accommodate the two new arrivals. At least for this week, the Orioles are opting to keep Irvin in the rotation over Albert Suarez, who is now being listed as a reliever after he had posted a 2.35 ERA and 1.11 WHIP in 15.1 innings over his three starts with Baltimore. Irvin's season-long numbers (3.49 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 18:7 K:BB in 28.1 innings) aren't quite as sparkling as Suarez's, but the southpaw has been excellent his last two times out, blanking the Royals on the road over 6.2 innings on April 21 before spinning seven shutout innings against the Athletics last Saturday. He could have a tougher time keeping the scoreless stretch going this weekend, as he'll take on the Reds in one of baseball's more hitter-friendly parks.

Orioles' Cole Irvin: Blanks Oakland on Saturday
Irvin (2-1) picked up the win Saturday, scattering four hits over seven scoreless innings in a 7-0 victory over the A's. He struck out five without walking a batter.
For the second straight start, Irvin led the Orioles to a combined shutout. The southpaw retired the first 10 batters he faced, and Oakland failed to get a baserunner into scoring position until he'd left the mound. Irvin tossed 63 of 89 pitches for strikes as he extended his scoreless streak to 14.1 innings, and his impressive stretch may have come in the nick of time to save his rotation spot -- Kyle Bradish (elbow) is ready to come off the IL, and John Means (forearm) may not be far behind. Bradish lines up to take Irvin's spot next Wednesday at home against the Yankees, but Steve Melewski of MASNSports.com reported prior to Saturday's game that Baltimore could shift to a six-man rotation in the short term. Irvin sports a 3.49 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 18:7 K:BB through 28.1 innings.

Orioles' Cole Irvin: Cruises to first win
Irvin (1-1) yielded four hits and two walks over 6.2 innings Sunday, striking out two and earning a win over the Royals.
The Royals threatened Irvin with a first-and-third situation in the first inning but he worked around it and didn't face much trouble for the rest of the afternoon. It was his longest outing of the year and his first quality start, though his two punchouts were a season-low. Through four starts, he's forced just 17 swinging strikes. He'll carry a 4.64 ERA into his next start, which is projected to be at home against Oakland.

Irvin did not factor into the decision during Monday's win over Minnesota, allowing two runs on six hits over 4.2 innings. He struck out four.
Irvin was sent out for the fifth inning with a chance to put himself in position for the win but was lifted in favor of Dillon Tate following a two-out single by Manuel Margot. Irvin had been held to roughly 80 pitches in each of his first two starts and the same held true Monday as he was pulled after 82. Irvin had allowed nine runs and walked five in his first two starts, so holding the Twins to just a pair of runs with zero walks was a step in the right direction. His next scheduled start is tentatively slated for a weekend matchup in Kansas City against the Royals.

Irvin didn't factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing five runs on seven hits and three walks across five innings against Boston. He struck out four.
Irvin benefitted from a pair of inning-ending double plays in the first and second, keeping a bad start from turning even worse. He was tagged by Triston Casas for a two-run home run during the fifth inning. Irvin has lasted exactly five innings in both of his starts, yielding nine earned runs in total with a 8:5 K:BB on the year. While he could easily be replaced by John Means (forearm) -- who made his second rehab start last weekend -- Irvin is tentatively lined up for a start against the Twins on Monday.

Irvin (0-1) took the loss Tuesday versus Kansas City, allowing four earned runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out three batters over five innings.
Irvin accumulated a 6.23 ERA and 1.85 WHIP across 17.1 innings during spring training, and his camp woes seem to have followed him into the regular season. Nick Loftin and Maikel Garcia combined to drive in three runs against the left-hander in the second inning Tuesday, and Garcia capped off the scoring with an RBI triple in the fourth. Irvin is lined up to start again versus Boston next week, though his time in Baltimore's rotation will likely come to an end once Kyle Bradish (elbow) or John Means (forearm) return from their respective injuries.

Irvin will begin 2024 as the Orioles' fifth starter, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
Experience wins out here, as Irvin's 7.30 ERA and 8:10 K:BB over 12.1 innings across four Grapefruit League starts probably didn't merit a rotation spot. His starting role is tenuous at best -- Kyle Bradish (elbow) and John Means (elbow) will miss some time to begin the season, but but he has a strong beginning to his 2024 campaign, Irvin is likely to head to the bullpen or Triple-A Norfolk once one of those pitchers is ready to debut.
