  • Athletics' Joey Estes: Lit up in second start

Estes (1-1) was hit with the loss Thursday against the Astros, allowing eight runs on eight hits and four walks over 3.2 innings while striking out four.

Estes struggled with his command out of the gate and was lucky to get through the first two innings unscathed despite allowing four batters to reach over that span. However, the traffic would finally catch up with the 22-year-old right-hander in the third after he issued a walk to Kyle Tucker to open the frame, which would eventually lead to six runs coming across for Houston in the inning. Estes would surrender another two runs in the fourth and actually allowed the leadoff man to reach in all four innings in which he appeared. It was a disappointing performance after he threw just 61 pitches over five frames in his first outing and did not walk a batter.

  • Athletics' Joey Estes: Getting another start

Estes is slated to start Thursday's game against the Astros in Houston, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.

He'll be awarded his second straight turn through the rotation after striking out five and allowing just one run over five innings last weekend in Seattle following his call-up from Triple-A Las Vegas. Estes could be in line for an extended run in the big-league rotation with Paul Blackburn (foot) recently going on the injured list and with Alex Wood (shoulder) also at risk of being deactivated.

  • Athletics' Joey Estes: Solid outing in 2024 MLB debut

Estes (1-0) earned the win in Saturday's 8-1 victory over the Mariners, allowing one run on two hits and no walks over five innings while striking out five.

Estes was efficient throughout his five innings of work, doing much of the damage with his slider and four-seamer. While he threw only eight of his 17 first pitches for strikes, the right-hander was frequently able to work his way back from being down in the count and gave up only two hits on the night, though one of those was a home run. Estes also took a liner off his right bicep in the first but still managed to scoop it up and retire Julio Rodriguez for the out at first base before waving off the trainer and continuing on with the inning. Estes' 2024 MLB debut was an impressive one, but it's unclear if he'll stick around with the big club for another turn through the rotation.

  • Athletics' Joey Estes: Recalled by Oakland

The Athletics recalled Estes from Triple-A Las Vegas ahead of his start against the Mariners on Saturday.

Despite a 2-3 record with a 6.04 ERA and 1.46 WHIP in Triple-A this season, Estes will take to the mound for the Athletics on Saturday in his season debut. The 22-year-old right-hander started in two games for Oakland last season, going 0-1 with a 7.20 ERA and 1.40 WHIP over 10 innings. To make room for Estes, the Athletics optioned left-hander Easton Lucas to Triple-A Las Vegas.

  • Athletics' Joey Estes: Will start Saturday

Estes will be recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas to start Saturday's game against the Mariners, Martin Gallegos of MLB.comreports.

Estes has posted a 6.04 ERA and 1.46 WHIP across 28.1 innings in Triple-A, but he will come up from the minors to make his season debut with Oakland nonetheless. The 22-year-old right-hander gave up eight earned runs in 10 major-league innings last season, and he isn't a recommended streaming option for Saturday.

  • Athletics' Joey Estes: Sent to Las Vegas

Estes was optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas on Sunday.

Estes appeared in three games with the Athletics this spring, allowing one run on two hits and a walk while striking out eight batters over seven innings. The right-hander produced a 5.23 ERA over 32.2 frames in seven appearances, including six starts, with Triple-A Las Vegas last season.

  • Athletics' Joey Estes: Fans five in final start

Estes worked 5.1 innings in a no-decision against Minnesota on Wednesday, allowing three runs on six hits and one walk while striking out five batters.

Estes was shaky early, giving up a solo homer to Edouard Julien in the first inning and yielding another run in the second. The right-hander mostly settled in from there, holding the Twins scoreless across the third to fifth frames before being charged with another run following his departure in the sixth. Estes threw 75 pitches in the start, so this was presumably his final appearance of the campaign. If that's the case, he'll finish with 7.20 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 7:2 K:BB over 10 innings during his first taste of the majors. He'll look to earn a rotation spot coming out of spring training in 2024.

  • Athletics' Joey Estes: Draws another start

Estes is slated to start Wednesday's game in Minnesota.

Despite being roughed up for five earned runs on six hits and one walk over 4.2 innings in his MLB debut last week against the Mariners, Estes will make a second straight turn through the rotation as the season winds down. The 22-year-old right-hander will look to turn in better results Wednesday as he aims to build a case for a spot in Oakland's 2024 Opening Day rotation.

  • Athletics' Joey Estes: Hammered by M's in MLB debut

Estes (0-1) took the loss Wednesday as the A's were downed 6-3 by the Mariners, surrendering six runs (five earned) on six hits -- including three home runs -- and a walk over 4.2 innings. He struck out two.

Called up earlier in the day to make his big-league debut. Estes got a rude welcome from Seattle's hitters, as Dominic Canzone slugged a two-run shot off the 21-year-old righty in the second inning before Julio Rodriguez (hand) and Cal Raleigh launched back-to-back solo shots in the fifth. Estes could end up having an impact on the race for the AL West title even though he took the loss. He hit two batters with pitches, including Rodriguez in the third inning, and the M's superstar was sent for precautionary X-rays after the game. The A's haven't yet indicated whether Estes will remain in the rotation for one more start next week before the season is over.

  • Athletics' Joey Estes: Summoned for debut

The Athletics selected Estes' contract from Triple-A Las Vegas on Wednesday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.

Estes is set to make his major-league debut Wednesday with a start in Oakland against the Mariners. The right-hander has collected a 3.74 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 131:43 K:BB over 137 innings between Double-A Midland and Las Vegas this season. Estes is a nice prospect but isn't a great streaming option for his debut.

  • Athletics' Joey Estes: Confirmed as Wednesday's starter

Athletics manager Mark Kotsay confirmed that Estes will be called up from Triple-A Las Vegas to start Wednesday's game against the Mariners, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.

Oakland will likely wait until a few hours before Wednesday's 3:37 p.m. ET opening pitch to make Estes' call-up official, but the 22-year-old right-hander will get the chance to make his MLB debut as the season winds down. Acquired last March as part of a prospect haul in the deal that sent All-Star first baseman Matt Olson to Atlanta, Estes has been one of the Athletics' better upper-level starting pitchers in the minors this season. Between stops at Double-A Midland and Las Vegas, Estes has struck out 131 and walked 43 over 137 innings while pitching to a 3.74 ERA and 1.16 WHIP.

  • Athletics' Joey Estes: Set to join major-league club

The Athletics plan to call up Estes from Triple-A Las Vegas on Monday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.

Estes was dealt from Atlanta to Oakland in March 2022 as part of the trade that sent Matt Olson to Atlanta. Estes has spent the 2023 campaign with Double-A Midland and Las Vegas, posting a 3.74 ERA and 1.16 WHIP in 137 innings over 27 appearances (23 starts) in the minors. The 21-year-old will have an opportunity to make a late-season impression for the rebuilding Athletics. Since he made his final start with Las Vegas on Friday, he could slot into the big-league rotation as soon as Wednesday against the Mariners in Oakland.

  • Athletics' Joey Estes: Dealt to A's

Estes was traded from Atlanta to Oakland along with Shea Langeliers, Cristian Pache and Ryan Cusick in exchange for Matt Olson on Monday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.

A 6-foot-2, 20-year-old righty, Estes broke out last season at Low-A, logging a 2.91 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 127 strikeouts in 99 innings. That strikeout total oversells things a little, but he is still a promising starting pitching prospect with a competitive streak on the mound.
