Player Outlook
Ryan Feltner made half as many starts (10) in 2023 compared to the prior season, but his 5.82 ERA looked much the same. The 27-year-old has an 18.9 percent strikeout rate and 13.9 percent walk rate, but a 0.4 HR/9 helped lead to an optimistic 4.17 FIP. He naturally pitched better away from Coors Field (8.40 home ERA vs. 4.45 road ERA), but the limited sample size makes it difficult to draw any major conclusions. Feltner's 6.06 ERA through 32 big-league outings doesn't provide much for fantasy managers to get excited about, and he's hardly guaranteed a rotation spot to open 2024.

  • Rockies' Ryan Feltner: Suffers sixth loss

Feltner (2-6) took the loss Friday against the Pirates, allowing four runs on seven hits and one walk over 6.2 innings. He struck out eight. Feltner struggled with the long ball, yielding a season-worst three homers. All three round trippers were titanic blasts that traveled more than 430 feet in the thin Colorado air. Feltner has been shaky since May 1, going 0-4 with a 6.17 ERA and 1.44 WHIP over 42.1 innings in eight starts. The Rockies right-hander gets no reprieve in his next start, as he's currently scheduled to face the Dodgers at home.

  • Rockies' Ryan Feltner: Fans seven in no-decision

Feltner allowed four runs (all unearned) on two hits and one walk while striking out seven batters over 5.1 innings in a no-decision against St. Louis on Saturday. Feltner held the Cardinals scoreless through five frames but ran into trouble when the first two batters reached base against him in the sixth. The right-hander responded by striking out Masyn Winn, but his defense then let him down with errors on each of the following two balls hit in play. That led to Feltner's departure and spoiled his chance at what could have been his first victory since April 12. Despite the disappointing finish, this was a much-needed bounce-back effort from Feltner after he allowed a combined 15 runs (13 earned) across 9.2 innings over his previous two starts.

  • Rockies' Ryan Feltner: Crushed by Reds

Feltner (1-5) yielded eight runs on 10 hits over 4.1 innings Monday, striking out three and taking a loss against the Reds. Feltner began his start with a scoreless first inning, but that was the only positive in what became a long night for Colorado's pitching staff. The Reds piled eight runs on Feltner, including back-to-back three-run innings in the second and third. He was knocked from the game after 4.1 frames for the second straight start and saw his ERA jump to 6.22 through 63.2 innings. Since the start of May, he's given up at least five runs in four of his six starts. Feltner's next outing is projected to be in St. Louis.

  • Rockies' Ryan Feltner: Hit hard in loss

Feltner allowed seven runs (six earned) on eight hits and two walks while striking out one over 4.1 innings in a no-decision versus the Guardians on Tuesday. Feltner finally had some struggles at Coors Field in his fourth home start of the campaign. Jose Ramirez tagged him for a two-run home run in the first inning and Josh Naylor added another two-run blast in the fifth. Feltner posted six scoreless innings against the Athletics in his previous start, but he took a step back Tuesday and continues to post poor numbers overall. He's at a 5.61 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 49:18 K:BB through 59.1 innings across 11 starts this season. He's projected to make his next start at home versus the Reds.

  • Rockies' Ryan Feltner: Good start wasted

Feltner allowed four hits and two walks while striking out six over six scoreless innings in a no-decision versus the Athletics on Thursday. This was arguably Feltner's best start of the campaign, but it was all for nothing as six Rockies relievers all gave up at least one run. The Athletics rallied to erase three deficits before ultimately winning in the 11th inning. Feltner's winless skid is at seven games, and he remains 1-4 on the year with a 5.07 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 48:16 K:BB through 55 innings over 10 starts. He's projected to make his next start at home versus the Guardians.

  • Rockies' Ryan Feltner: Surrenders five runs in loss

Feltner (1-4) gave up five runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out two over four-plus innings to take the loss Friday versus the Giants. This is the fifth time in nine starts Feltner has allowed at least four runs. The Rockies got off to a good start, but the right-hander gave it all back when he was tagged for a three-run home run by Thairo Estrada in the fifth inning. Feltner is now at a 5.69 ERA, 1.49 WHIP and 42:14 K:BB through 49 innings this season. Oddly enough, he's been slightly worse away from Coors Field in 2024, but his next start is projected to come in Oakland.

  • Rockies' Ryan Feltner: Stumbles in ninth inning Tuesday

Feltner did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing three runs on five hits over eight innings. He struck out three. Felter was dominant for most of Tuesday's outing, blanking the Marlins through eight frames. With the Rockies up 5-0, the 27-year-old Feltner started the ninth inning, eyeing the first complete game of his career. However, he was pulled after allowing the first three batters to reach in the inning before the bullpen imploded, ultimately allowing the Marlins to tie the game and costing Feltner a chance at a win. Despite the disappointing finish, it was an encouraging outing for Feltner overall after he allowed 10 runs over 9.1 innings in his previous two starts. He's 1-2 on the season with a 5.13 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 33:10 K:BB through six starts (33.1 innings).

  • Rockies' Ryan Feltner: Endures nightmare first inning

Feltner (1-2) took the loss Wednesday, allowing six runs on nine hits and two walks over 5.1 innings against Philadelphia. He struck out eight. The Phillies teed off on Feltner in the first inning, starting the game with back-to-back solo shots by Kyle Schwarber and Trea Turner as part of a four-run frame. Though Feltner settled in afterward, the damage was already done. Wednesday's outing was the first hiccup in what's been a very successful start to the 2024 campaign for Feltner. Before facing the Phillies, Feltner had allowed three or fewer earned runs in each of his three starts. He's lined up to make his next start Tuesday against the Padres at Coors Field.

  • Rockies' Ryan Feltner: Grabs first win

Feltner (1-1) earned the win Friday against the Blue Jays, allowing two runs on eight hits and two walks over five innings. He struck out four. Feltner allowed a run in each of the first two innings before settling in and holding Toronto scoreless over his final three frames as the Rockies erupted for 12 runs in a comfortable win. Feltner's gotten off to a nice start this year, posting a 3.38 ERA with a 1.31 WHIP and 18:6 K:BB through his first three outings (16 innings). However, the 27-year-old righty isn't likely to warrant fantasy consideration while pitching half the time at Coors Field -- Feltner struggled to a 5.82 ERA in 10 starts last season.

  • Rockies' Ryan Feltner: Handed first loss

Feltner (0-1) yielded five runs (three earned) on five hits and two walks over five innings Sunday, striking out four and taking a loss against Arizona. Feltner struggled out of the gate Sunday, coughing up three runs in the first frame, including a two-run homer from Christian Walker. After following with three shutout innings, Feltner gave up two unearned runs in the fifth. The 27-year-old should have a spot in the rotation for now but shouldn't be trusted in most fantasy formats.

  • Rockies' Ryan Feltner: Ready to compete for rotation spot

Feltner (elbow) is healthy heading into spring training and will compete for a rotation spot, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. Feltner had an injury-plagued 2023 campaign, first suffering a skull fracture after being struck by a line drive in mid-May. He ended the season on the injured list with elbow inflammation, but he has fully recovered and will be entering the spring at full strength. That doesn't necessarily mean he'll start the season in the majors or the rotation, as he posted a 5.82 ERA and 1.68 WHIP across 43.1 innings with the club in 2023. Peter Lambert and Noah Davis are the other primary candidates to be the team's fifth starter.

  • Rockies' Ryan Feltner: Placed on 15-day IL

The Rockies placed Feltner on the 15-day injured list Wednesday with right elbow inflammation. Feltner started the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Dodgers and probably wasn't going to make another appearance either way. The 27-year-old right-hander finishes the 2023 campaign with a 5.82 ERA, 1.69 WHIP and 38:28 K:BB in 10 major-league starts covering 43.1 innings.

  • Rockies' Ryan Feltner: Impressive in return

Feltner did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing two hits and two walks over five scoreless innings in a 2-0 loss to the Padres. He struck out five. Feltner made his first appearance since May 13 after being hit in the head by a comebacker and fired off five scoreless innings Tuesday. Encouragingly, Feltner got up to 86 pitches and appeared to be fully stretched out. However, Feltner was never in contention for the win, as the Rockies were no-hit until the ninth inning. The 26-year-old is tentatively scheduled to take the mound Sunday during a road matchup with the Cubs.

  • Rockies' Ryan Feltner: Activated for start Tuesday

Feltner (head) was activated from the 60-day injured list ahead of his start Tuesday at San Diego. Feltner suffered a small skull fracture and a concussion when he was struck by a line drive May 13 against the Phillies, but he is back at full strength and can fit in a couple more turns in the Rockies' rotation before the conclusion of the 2023 campaign. The 27-year-old right-hander threw 66 pitches over 4.2 innings of one-run ball in his third and final minor-league rehab start last week with Triple-A Albuquerque.

  • Rockies' Ryan Feltner: Set for return Tuesday

Feltner (head) will be activated from the 60-day injured list to start Tuesday's game against the Padres, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. Feltner suffered a scary injury May 13 against the Phillies after taking a line drive to the head, and he was later diagnosed with a concussion and a small skull fracture. However, he made his third rehab start Tuesday at Triple-A Albuquerque without issue and has been given the green light by Colorado's medical staff to return. The right-hander fired 66 total pitches in his final rehab start, so he figures to be on a similar pitch limit in San Diego.

  • Rockies' Ryan Feltner: Covers 4.2 innings in rehab start

Feltner (head) struck out four and allowed one earned run on three hits and two walks over 4.2 innings in his most recent rehab start Tuesday at Triple-A Albuquerque. Making the third start of his rehab assignment and his second in a row with Albuquerque, Feltner built up to 66 pitches (40 strikes). Per MLB.com, Rockies manager Bud Black said Feltner will make one more rehab start in the minors before making his return from the 60-day injured list and likely sliding into the big-league rotation. Feltner has been on the shelf since mid-May after being struck in the head by a line drive and suffering a small skull fracture and concussion.

  • Rockies' Ryan Feltner: Second rehab start Thursday

Feltner (head) will make his second minor-league rehab start Thursday with Triple-A Albuquerque, Patrick Lyons of TheDNVR.com reports. Feltner tallied three strikeouts over three innings of one-run ball in his rehab debut last Friday with High-A Spokane and will now jump to the Triple-A level as he readies for a late-season return to the Rockies' starting rotation. The 27-year-old right-hander suffered a skull fracture and concussion when he got struck by a Nick Castellanos comebacker in mid-May.

  • Rockies' Ryan Feltner: Set to pitch Wednesday

Feltner (head) is set to begin a rehab assignment with High-A Spokane on Wednesday, Kelsey Wingert-Linch of AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain reports. Feltner has taken a while to recover and resume a throwing progression after being struck on the head by a line drive in mid-May, but he's on the verge of appearing in a game for the first time in more than three months. Barring any setbacks, Feltner should be ready to return from the 60-day injured list before the campaign comes to a close.

  • Rockies' Ryan Feltner: Should return this year

Manager Bud Black, according to Patrick Lyons of TheDNVR.com, "has confidence Feltner (head) will pitch again in 2023." Feltner has been out of action since being struck on the head by a baseball in mid-May, but he resumed throwing earlier this month, and he is scheduled to face hitters Saturday "without a protective screen." It's unclear how close he is to embarking on a rehab assignment, but that might not be too far in the future if things continue going as planned.

  • Rockies' Ryan Feltner: Shifts to 60-day IL

The Rockies transferred Feltner (head) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Monday. Colorado still hasn't offered a concrete timeline for Feltner's return to game action, but his move to the 60-day IL ensures that he won't be available for the big club until after the All-Star break while he recovers from the small head fracture and concussion he sustained when he was struck by a comebacker in a May 13 start versus the Phillies. The transaction clears up a spot on the 40-man roster for left-hander Ryan Rolison (shoulder), who was reinstated from the 60-day IL and optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque.
