Estevez struck out two in a perfect ninth inning to earn the save in a 4-3 win over the Giants on Saturday. Called upon in the ninth inning for the second night in a row, Estevez needed just 12 pitches to secure his 12th save of the season. Estevez has not allowed a baserunner in five June appearances and has now converted six consecutive save opportunities dating back to May 20. On the season, Estevez is 12-for-15 in save chances with a 3.68 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and 22:3 K:BB in 22 innings.... See More ... See Less

Angels' Carlos Estevez: Collects 11th save
Estevez struck out one in a perfect inning to earn the save in Friday's 8-6 win over the Giants. The Giants rallied late, but Estevez shut the door with a 17-pitch ninth inning. He's up to 11 saves this season, five of which have come over his last seven appearances. The closer has added a 3.86 ERA, 0.95 WHIP, 20:3 K:BB and three blown saves through 21 innings. The Angels don't often have leads to protect, but Estevez should continue to close as long as he's with the team -- though as a pending free agent, he will be a trade target over the next six weeks.... Angels' Carlos Estevez: Picks up win Sunday
Estevez (1-3) got the win over the Astros on Sunday after pitching a scoreless ninth inning and striking out a batter in the process. Estevez was tasked with preserving a tie game, and did so without any trouble, sending the Astros hitters down in order on 12 pitches. He wound up as the winning pitcher after the Angels walked it off in the bottom of the ninth thanks to a two-run homer from Logan O'Hoppe. Estevez now has four consecutive scoreless appearances during which he's compiled three saves and a win. For the year, the 31-year-old has 10 saves to go with a 4.05 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 19:3 K:BB in 20 innings.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Carlos Estevez: Secures save No. 10
Estevez picked up the save in Tuesday's 4-2 win over the Padres while pitching a perfect ninth inning. Estevez needed just nine pitches to retire the side for his second save in as many days. He has not allowed a baserunner in any of his last three appearances and becomes the 16th pitcher to reach double-digit saves this year. The 31-year-old now owns a 4.26 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 18:3 K:BB in 19 innings this year.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Carlos Estevez: Notches ninth save
Estevez struck out one batter in a perfect ninth inning and earned a save over the Padres on Monday. Estevez needed only 10 pitches to quickly finish off the 2-1 victory. He's given up one earned run over his last 6.1 innings, lowering his season ERA to 4.50 through 18 frames. Estevez has converted three straight save chances and is now nine for 12 in those situations this season.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Carlos Estevez: Allows run but converts save
Estevez allowed a run on two hits and a walk without striking out a batter over one inning, earning the save in Monday's 9-7 win over the Astros. Estevez's last two outings came in non-save situations after he blew a save May 10 versus the Royals. The closer is now 7-for-10 in save chances this season, though there are some warning signs reemerging after he struggled late in 2023. He's now at a 5.17 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 17:2 K:BB through 15.2 innings this season. As long as the walk rate stays down, Estevez should be able to right the ship, but he's allowed multiple baserunners in six of his last 10 outings.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Carlos Estevez: Blows save, takes loss
Estevez (0-2) blew the save and took the loss Friday against Kansas City. He allowed two runs on three hits and no walks with one strikeout over one inning. Estevez allowed a lead-taking, two-run homer to Adam Frazier in the ninth inning to blow his third save on the year. Remarkably, the Angels closer has yet to issue a free pass this season after posting a shaky 11.0 percent walk rate in 2023, but he has allowed three homers over 11.2 innings, leading to a 6.17 ERA. Despite the ugly ERA, Estevez's hold on the ninth-inning role seems to be fairly secure thanks in large part to a career-high 30.4 percent strikeout rate.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Carlos Estevez: Back on track with sixth save
Estevez retired all three batters he faced with two strikeouts to earn the save Wednesday against the Pirates. The right-hander pitched a scoreless ninth Tuesday in a blowout victory in his first appearance of May, which gives him back-to-back scoreless appearances after he gave up six runs over his previous four outings. Estevez has converted six of eight save chances and has an ugly 5.06 ERA over 10.2 innings this season, but a 0.84 WHIP and 13:0 K:BB are encouraging. His status as the Angels' closer should be stable for now.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Carlos Estevez: Has nightmare ninth
Estevez (0-1) blew the save and took the loss Tuesday, allowing three runs on three hits with two strikeouts over two-thirds of an inning against Philadelphia. Each of the three hits against Estevez went for extra bases, with Nick Castellanos hitting a solo homer and Johan Rojas bringing in Bryson Stott -- who reached on a ground-rule double -- on a two-run homer to give the Phillies the lead. Estevez has now surrendered one or more runs in three of his last four appearances, a stretch that ballooned his ERA from 0.00 to 6.23 and resulted in a pair of blown saves. While his closing job seems to be safe for now, Matt Moore and Luis Garcia would be the names to know if Estevez begins to cede ninth-inning work.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Carlos Estevez: Avoids blown save
Estevez allowed a run on two hits in one inning Monday. He struck out one batter and earned a save over the Phillies. Estevez entered a 6-4 game and found himself in a jam with two on and one out. He gave up one run but still preserved the 6-5 victory. Estevez has converted five of his six save chances this season but has coughed up three runs in his last three appearances. Before that, he had a five-inning scoreless streak to open the 2024 campaign. Estevez owns a 3.38 ERA with a perfect 8:0 K:BB through eight innings.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Carlos Estevez: Locks up save No. 4
Estevez struck out two in a perfect ninth inning to pick up the save in a 7-4 win over the Orioles on Tuesday. Estevez struck out Jackson Holliday and Adley Rutschman while getting Gunnar Henderson to ground out to retire the side in order. Tuesday was his first appearance in a week since blowing a save against the Rays. Outside of that outing, Estevez has been very reliable as the team's closer and doesn't face much competition for the job with Robert Stephenson (elbow) out for the year and Jose Soriano in the rotation. He now has four saves to go along with a 2.57 ERA, 0.57 WHIP and 7:0 K:BB in seven innings thus far.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Carlos Estevez: First blown save of 2024
Estevez gave up two runs on three hits in the ninth inning Tuesday to blow his first save of the season in a 7-6 extra-innings loss to the Rays. He struck out one. Called upon to protect a 3-1 lead, Estevez got two quick outs before the wheels fell off, with a Jose Caballero triple tying up the game. The Angels then had multiple other chances to put the game away before eventually falling in 13 innings. The runs were the first Estevez has allowed this season, and he's gone 3-for-4 in converting save chances with a 5:0 K:BB over six innings.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Carlos Estevez: Notches first save
Estevez picked up the save Sunday against the Orioles. He pitched a clean inning with no strikeouts. Estevez calmly retired all three Orioles batters he faced Sunday to earn his first save of the season and 57th of his career. The 31-year-old reliever entered 2024 on the hot seat following the Angels' signing of Robert Stephenson over the winter. However, with Stephenson (shoulder) slated to be out until late April, Estevez should have no issue being the main saves target in the team's bullpen for now.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Carlos Estevez: Strikes out two for 31st save
Estevez picked up the save in Saturday's 1-0 win over Minnesota, striking out two over one inning while not allowing any hits or walks. He also hit a batter with a pitch. Estevez entered the game with a one-run lead in the ninth and hit Kyle Farmer with a pitch in the opening at-bat before getting the next two batters to go down swinging. The right-handed reliever was then able to retire Christian Vazquez on a flyout to secure his 31st save of the season, marking the first time in his last four appearances that he didn't allow any hits or walks. Estevez has converted two of his last three save opportunities and has not given up a home run since Aug. 3.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Carlos Estevez: Blows save, takes fifth loss
Estevez (5-5) blew the save and took the loss Thursday against the Rays. He allowed two runs on four hits and one walk while striking out one over two-thirds of an inning. Estevez immediately ran into trouble allowing the first two batters (Harold Ramirez and Yandy Diaz) to reach via singles in the ninth inning. He was unable to stem the tide and eventually allowed the game-winning run to score via a Manuel Margot single. Before Thursday, Estevez had thrown four straight scoreless outings dating back to Sept. 5, his last blown save. He has 30 saves and four blown saves on the year.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Carlos Estevez: Strikes out two for 29th save
Estevez picked up the save Wednesday against Philadelphia, striking out two over a perfect inning. Estevez got Alec Bohm to go down on strikes to open the bottom of the ninth before needing 17 pitches to retire Brandon Marsh in the following at-bat. The right-hander then made short work of Josh Rojas to close out the game and nail down his 29th save of the season. Estevez has now converted each of his last three save opportunities and has not issued a walk over his last eight appearances (spanning 8.2 innings). He's also recorded two strikeouts in five of his last seven outings.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Carlos Estevez: Nabs 28th save
Estevez picked up a save against the Mets on Saturday with a perfect inning of work. Estevez had no trouble protecting a two-run lead in the bottom of the ninth inning, retiring the side in order on 10 pitches (nine of which were strikes). The right-hander appears to be past a rough start to August during which he blew two saves and gave up nine runs over 2.1 innings across his first three appearances. Since that stretch, Estevez has gone 5-for-5 in save chances while holding his opponent scoreless in six of seven outings and posting a 9:0 K:BB over 7.2 frames.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Carlos Estevez: Puts away Astros Sunday
Estevez struck out two during a 1-2-3 ninth inning Sunday to slam the door on the Astros and pick up his 25th save of the year. Estevez locked down his second save of the week and needed just 12 pitches to send the Astros down in order. He struck out Grae Kessinger and Yainer Diaz before getting Jose Altuve to fly out to end the game. The 30-year-old seems to be getting back on track after some rough showings over the past few weeks. Estevez now holds a 3.42 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 58:27 K:BB in 47.1 innings.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Carlos Estevez: Implodes in blown save
Estevez (5-2) took the loss and blew a save against the Mariners on Thursday, allowing four runs on two hits and two walks while striking out three batters over one inning. Estevez entered the contest a perfect 23-for-23 in save opportunities, but that fantastic run came to an end Thursday. The right-hander walked the first two batters he faced before a Dominic Canzone single loaded the bases. Estevez bounced back to strike out Teoscar Hernandez but then saw the game turn on its head when Cade Marlowe belted a grand slam on an 0-2 pitch. Estevez probably isn't yet in danger of losing his closing gig given his strong overall results this season, though he's struggled of late, allowing nine runs over four frames across his past three appearances.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Carlos Estevez: Notches 23rd save
Estevez issued one walk in a scoreless inning against Pittsburgh on Sunday. He struck out one and earned a save. Estevez worked around a two-out walk to finish off the 7-5 victory. He remains perfect in save chances, converting all 23 of them so far this season. The 30-year-old righty owns a 2.03 ERA and a 48:20 K:BB through 40 innings. Estevez has turned in three straight scoreless appearances after yielding two runs against Houston on July 16.... See More ... See Less

Jeff Fletcher@JeffFletcherOCR3H agoChase Silseth gave up 3 runs in 5 innings today in his 2nd rehab game at AAA. He threw 77 pitches. I point this out because José Suarez just allowed 4 runs in the 4th inning, without retiring anyone. The Angels are down 4-2 in the 4th.

Jeff Fletcher@JeffFletcherOCR4H agoNolan Schanuel just hit his 8th HR of the season. The narrative on him was he'd be this high OBP guy with no power, but so far the power has been better than expected and the OBP has worse. Go figure. Angels up 2-0 in the 2nd.
