  • Pirates' Ke'Bryan Hayes: Riding pine Sunday

Hayes is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Rockies.

Hayes will get some rest for the series finale in Colorado after he had started in each of the Pirates' last five games while going 3-for-21 with a stolen base and a run scored. Jared Triolo will fill in for Hayes at the hot corner.

  • Pirates' Ke'Bryan Hayes: Swipes fifth bag

Hayes went 1-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base Friday against the Rockies.

Hayes hasn't hit well across 13 games since returning from a back injury, as he's maintained only a .240 average with one extra-base hit. However, he has shown the desire to steal bases by recording all five of his thefts on the season since his return.

  • Pirates' Ke'Bryan Hayes: Out of Sunday's lineup

Hayes is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Twins, Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Hayes had started nine of 10 games since he returned from his back injury in late May, with the lone absence coming in a doubleheader. The 27-year-old has a .745 OPS in 33 at-bats since coming back from the injury, and Sunday's rest day will give him two straight days to take it easy since the Pirates have a team day off Monday. Jared Triolo will man the hot corner in the series finale versus Minnesota.

  • Pirates' Ke'Bryan Hayes: Swipes fourth bag

Hayes went 1-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base in Saturday's 4-0 win over the Twins.

The third baseman is up to four steals on the season, and all of them have come in his last eight games. Hayes is also batting .323 (10-for-31) over that stretch with a homer, four RBI and six runs, and he seems fully recovered from the back issues that cost him most of May and which may have contributed to his .239/.317/.318 slash line in April.

  • Pirates' Ke'Bryan Hayes: Goes yard in Saturday's win

Hayes went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run and a second run scored in Saturday's 8-1 win over the Blue Jays.

The third baseman took Yusei Kikuchi deep in the first inning, helping to kick-start what proved to be a laugher for the Pirates. It was only Hayes' second long ball of the season and his first in three games since recovering from back issues and coming off the IL. The 27-year-old had has a rough start to the campaign, but he could be rounding into form now that he's healthy.

  • Pirates' Ke'Bryan Hayes: Swipes first bag of 2024

Hayes went 1-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base in Friday's 5-3 extra-innings loss to the Blue Jays.

The steal was his first of the year, after he'd swiped 30 over the prior two seasons combined. Hayes missed most of May with back trouble, which could help explain his lack of activity on the basepaths, and Friday's single was his first hit of any kind since May 5. The third baseman has a disappointing .237/.318/.311 slash line through 36 games with one homer and 12 RBI, but if he can stay healthy he's capable of heating up over the summer.

  • Pirates' Ke'Bryan Hayes: Resting for second game of twin bill

Hayes is out of the lineup for the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader with the Tigers.

After being activated from the injured list Tuesday, Hayes had to wait a day to make his return to the lineup due to a rainout creating a doubleheader Wednesday. He started at third base and played all eight innings in the field in the Pirates' 8-0 loss in the first game of the day, going 0-for-2 with a walk. Hayes should settle back into an everyday role at the hot corner, but the Pirates won't have him play two full games in his first day back in the lineup. Jared Triolo will fill in for him at third base in the second game of the day.
