Canelo Alvarez has seen the footage of Gennady Golovkin’s hard-fought decision win over Daniel Jacobs in March, and the Mexican superstar believes the results backed up what he has believed all along about the fighter most boxing fans wish he will agree to face this fall.
“What Danny Jacobs did, I can do much more on that fight night,” Alvarez told the Los Angeles Times on Monday. “Golovkin’s style is [one] that he doesn’t know how to go backwards. He doesn’t know how to fight from the outside. He’s very powerful and strong, but he only knows how to fight on the inside.
“If you’re in front of him, he’s going to get you. But if you’re around him, giving him a hard time … there’s so many ways to beat him.”
Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs), who holds three of four recognized titles at 160 pounds, made his 18th title defense against Jacobs (32-2, 29 KOs) but was taken the full 12-round distance for the first time in his career in a fight many believed Jacobs deserved at worst a draw.
“We -- my camp and I -- already knew what kind of fighter [Golovkin] was,” Alvarez said. “We knew these things the media and the world are just seeing now. To us, it’s nothing new. Same old thing.”
Alvarez (48-1-1, 34 KOs), who remains the lineal middleweight champion despite forfeiting his WBC title last year to avoid facing his mandatory opponent Golovkin, has put off an eventual showdown for GGG for two full years. On May 6, Alvarez, 26, returns to face Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in a 164.5-pound catchweight bout for Mexican bragging rights.
Golovkin has reportedly decided to put off plans for a June unification bout against Billy Joe Saunders in Kazakhstan in order to focus on making a September fight with Alvarez, which would be the biggest event the sport could make outside of a Floyd Mayweather-Conor McGregor circus.
