Yelich (back) was spotted running on the field prior to Wednesday's 3-2 win over the Pirates, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. While Yelich's ability to take part in some form of on-field activity is a positive sign as he works his way back from a lower-back strain, he has yet to resume swinging a bat or playing catch since landing on the 10-day injured list on April 16. The Brewers haven't set a firm target date for Yelich's return to the lineup, but at the very least, he doesn't look as though he'll be ready to come off the IL when first eligible this weekend.... Brewers' Christian Yelich: Lands on injured list
The Brewers placed Yelich on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with a lower-back strain. Yelich's move to the IL is retroactive to Saturday, so he will be eligible to return beginning next Tuesday. It's unclear whether or not the 32-year-old outfielder will be ready to return by then, but his condition has improved since sustaining the injury during Friday's game against Baltimore. While he's out, Blake Perkins will likely continue seeing regular playing time in the outfield, and the Brewers will promote Owen Miller from Triple-A Nashville to add to their depth.... See More ... Brewers' Christian Yelich: Absence continues Tuesday
Yelich (back) is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Padres. The 32-year-old hasn't seen the field since Friday, and he'll sit for the fourth straight game as he continues to deal with the back injury. According to Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the Brewers considered Tuesday a deadline for a potential IL move for Yelich, but it remains to be seen if he's shifted to the shelf.... Brewers' Christian Yelich: Held out again Monday
Yelich (back) remains out of the lineup for Monday's game versus the Padres. Brewers manager Pat Murphy said pregame that Yelich is "about the same" in regard to his progress from a back injury, although the club is hopeful some medication the outfielder is taking will help, per Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. A decision as to whether Yelich will be placed on the injured list will be made Tuesday. He hasn't played since Friday.... See More ... See Less -
Brewers' Christian Yelich: Could land on IL
Brewers manager Pat Murphy said Saturday that Yelich (back) won't play during the rest of Milwaukee's weekend series against Baltimore and may require a trip to the injured list, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Murphy added that a decision on Yelich will likely come before Monday's series opener against the Padres. If the 32-year-old outfielder's condition doesn't improve by then, he would likely move to the IL, opening the door for Blake Perkins to see regular reps in the outfield. Yelich has been scorching hot to begin the year, slashing .333/.422/.744 across 45 plate appearances.... See More ... See Less -
Brewers' Christian Yelich: Held out Saturday
Yelich (back) isn't in the Brewers' lineup for Saturday's game against the Orioles. Yelich felt his back tighten up on him while running during Friday's win and was removed from the game in the second inning. The veteran outfielder has a history with back injuries, so it's not too surprising to see Milwaukee rest him to avoid making the issue worse. Sal Frelick will shift to left field in Yelich's place, allowing Blake Perkins to start in center field and bat ninth.... See More ... See Less -
Brewers' Christian Yelich: Removed early Friday
Yelich was removed from Friday's game against the Orioles early due to lower-back discomfort, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. It's not immediately apparent how serious Yelich's injury is, but the decision to remove him may be precautionary, as he has dealt with back issues in the past. The veteran outfielder singled during his lone at-bat Friday during the top of first inning and was replaced on defense by Blake Perkins before the bottom half of the second.... See More ... Brewers' Christian Yelich: Tacks on three RBI
Yelich went 2-for-4 with a double, three RBI and a walk in Tuesday's victory over the Reds. All of Yelich's RBI over his first eight games came via the home run, but he racked up three of them Tuesday without the aid of the long ball. Yelich continues to swing it well early, and he sits sixth in the league among qualified players with a 1.116 OPS.... See More ... See Less -
Brewers' Christian Yelich: Steps out of lineup
Yelich is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Mariners. Yelich started the first seven games of the season in left field and has a 1.033 OPS with three homers in 29 plate appearances, but he'll take a seat Sunday. Sal Frelick will shift to left field while Blake Perkins starts in center for the series finale versus Seattle.... See More ... See Less -
Brewers' Christian Yelich: Tallies three hits Friday
Yelich went 3-for-4 with a solo home run during Friday's 3-1 victory over the Mets. After batting .303 across 11 spring training games, Yelich's bat stayed hot to begin the new campaign. He registered a base hit in each of his first three at-bats, including a solo shot off Jose Quintana in the top of the fourth inning, before striking out in his final plate appearance. The 2018 NL MVP will likely bat third in Milwaukee's lineup more often than not this season after spending the past few years as the Brewers' leadoff man, which could bode well for his RBI total.... Brewers' Christian Yelich: Will bat third for Milwaukee
Brewers manager Pat Murphy confirmed Monday that his preference is to bat Yelich third this season, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Yelich was the team's leadoff hitter last season under former manager Craig Counsell, but he's mostly hit third this spring with Murphy now in charge. While the new alignment might cost Yelich some runs scored, it should boost his RBI outlook. Garrett Mitchell and Sal Frelick are options for the leadoff spot.... See More ... See Less -
Brewers' Christian Yelich: Making spring debut over weekend
Brewers manager Pat Murphy said he expects Yelich to make his Cactus League debut at some point this weekend, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Extended plate appearances aren't as beneficial in spring training for an established veteran like Yelich compared to a younger player looking to secure an Opening Day roster spot, so the two-time All-Star has instead spent the early part of camp taking part in live batting practice and simulated games to ready himself for the upcoming season. After three consecutive seasons with a sub-.800 OPS, Yelich enjoyed something of a bounce-back campaign in 2023, slashing .278/.370/.447 with 19 home runs and 28 stolen bases across 144 games. Most of Yelich's underlying numbers supported the jump in his batting average and power production, so fantasy players can probably target the 32-year-old outfielder with a greater degree of confidence in fantasy drafts compared to the past couple of years. Even though Murphy is now serving as the Brewers' skipper due to Craig Counsell moving on to the Cubs, Yelich is still expected to occupy his familiar perch atop the order in 2024.... See More ... Brewers' Christian Yelich: Gets breather Saturday
Yelich isn't in the Brewers' lineup Saturday against the Cubs. Yelich and his .633 OPS against lefties will sit out the beginning of Saturday's game with Jordan Wicks set to start for Chicago. Mark Canha will start in left field with William Contreras serving as the designated hitter, allowing Victor Caratini to start behind the plate.... See More ... See Less -
Brewers' Christian Yelich: Out of Wednesday's lineup
Yelich is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Cardinals. The veteran outfielder will receive a day off after the Brewers clinched the NL Central title Tuesday. Tyrone Taylor, Blake Perkins and Sal Frelick will start from left to right in the outfield while Yelich sits.... See More ... See Less -
Brewers' Christian Yelich: Shines in return Friday
Yelich (back) went 3-for-4 with one double, two homers, five RBI and four runs scored in Friday's 16-1 victory over Miami. Yelich had appeared in just one game since Sept. 8 because of a back injury, but he looked 100 percent Friday while helping the Brewers clinch a postseason spot with a complete rout of the Marlins. His second-inning homer sailed an estimated 368 feet, and his sixth-inning blast was tabulated at 430 feet. The 31-year-old outfielder now has 19 homers on the season to go along with his 27 stolen bases.... See More ... See Less -
Brewers' Christian Yelich: Batting leadoff in return
Yelich (back) is starting in left field and batting leadoff in his return to the lineup Friday at Miami. Yelich has logged only four plate appearances over the last two weeks because of a back injury, but he is ready to give it a go as the Brewers open a three-game weekend series versus the Marlins. When healthy this season, the 31-year-old outfielder has posted a solid .795 OPS with 17 home runs, 70 RBI, 27 stolen bases and 98 runs across 137 games.... See More ... See Less -
Brewers' Christian Yelich: Sits again with back injury
Yelich (back) is out of the lineup again Wednesday at St. Louis. Yelich is said to be making progress in his recovery from a lingering back injury, but he has started only one of the Brewers' last 12 games. Tyrone Taylor, Blake Perkins and Sal Frelick are starting across the outfield Wednesday as Mark Canha fills the DH role.... See More ... See Less -
Brewers' Christian Yelich: Out again with back issue
Yelich (back) remains out of the lineup Tuesday at St. Louis. Yelich has now started only one of the Brewers' last 11 games due to lingering back discomfort. Tyrone Taylor, Blake Perkins and Sal Frelick will canvass the outfield Tuesday versus the Cardinals and left-hander Drew Rom.... See More ... See Less -
Brewers' Christian Yelich: Will not start Monday
Yelich (back) is not in the lineup for Monday's game against the Cardinals. The Brewers continue to take the cautious route with Yelich, and he will open on the bench for the ninth time in 10 games. It's unclear how he is feeling, so it remains to be seen when he will return to action. However, he remains on the active roster for the time being.... See More ... See Less -
Brewers' Christian Yelich: Returns to bench
Yelich (back) will sit Saturday against the Nationals. Yelich returned to the lineup Friday after missing the previous six games due to back stiffness. His absence Saturday is due to the same issue, per Adam McCalvy of MLB.com, but with manager Craig Counsell saying merely, "I just don't think he's 100 percent," this looks more like a maintenance day than a setback. Between Yelich's star status, his history of back problems and the Brewers' 5.5-game lead atop the NL Central, it's likely the team will continue to be cautious with him over the last two weeks of the regular season. Mark Canha starts in left field Saturday.... See More ... See Less
