Gallo (shoulder) will begin a rehab assignment with Low-A Fredericksburg on Saturday, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports. It's a relatively quick turnaround for Gallo, who went on the injured list less than a week ago with a sprained AC joint in his left shoulder. Because he's missed so little time, Gallo shouldn't need too many rehab games before being activated.... See More ... See Less

Nationals' Joey Gallo: Placed on injured list
The Nationals placed Gallo on the 10-day injured list Saturday with a sprained AC joint in his left shoulder, Bobby Blanco of MASNSports.com reports. Gallo is slashing .122/.286/.311 across 91 plate appearances so far this season, but his shoulder injury will cause him to miss at least the next 10 days. Alex Call was recalled from Triple-A Rochester to replace Gallo as outfield depth.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Joey Gallo: Shifting to right field
Nationals manager Dave Martinez said Wednesday that Gallo will play right field while Lane Thomas (knee) is sidelined, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports. Washington will let Gallo get his feet wet in right field right away, as he'll occupy the position and bat fifth Wednesday against the Dodgers after having previously not made a start in the outfield all season while instead playing first base or serving as a designated hitter. Gallo has won multiple Gold Gloves for his defensive work in the outfield, so he's a sensible solution in right field. Trey Lipscomb is slated to see ample action at first base during Thomas' upcoming absence, while Joey Meneses will also be an option there.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Joey Gallo: Not in Friday's lineup
Gallo is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Astros. Gallo started the previous 14 games and will take a seat after he posted a .170/.328/.447 slash line with three homers and a 43.1 percent strikeout rate during that stretch. Joey Meneses will start at first base versus Houston righty Justin Verlander.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Joey Gallo: In lineup Wednesday
Gallo (wrist) will start at first base and bat cleanup in Wednesday's game in San Francisco, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports. Gallo was hit on the left wrist by a pitch in Tuesday's game, but X-rays came back negative and he's back in the lineup a day later. The 30-year-old is slashing .167/.302/.417 in his first 10 games with the Nationals.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Joey Gallo: X-rays on left wrist negative
Nationals manager Dave Martinez said after Tuesday's 5-3 win over the Giants that X-rays on Gallo's left wrist returned negative after the 30-year-old was hit by a pitch in his final plate appearance, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports. Gallo went 0-for-3 to drop his season-long batting average to .167 before he reached base in the eighth inning, when he was struck by a Taylor Rogers pitch. He was able to run the bases after being hit by the pitch, so his postgame X-rays may have just been administered out of an abundance of caution. Before an off day Thursday, the Nationals will face the Giants on Wednesday in an afternoon game, so Martinez could look to give Gallo the day off just to allow any lingering soreness in the slugger's wrist to subside.... Nationals' Joey Gallo: Nabs steal in Sunday's win
Gallo went 0-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base in Sunday's win over the Phillies. The 30-year-old swiped his first bag of the season, but there likely won't be too many to follow -- his career high is only seven, set back in 2017. It's been a fairly typical start to 2024 for Gallo, who's batting .179 (5-for-28) through eight games with a 6:11 BB:K, but four of his five hits have gone for extra bases including two homers.... Nationals' Joey Gallo: Logs first hits of 2024
Gallo went 3-for-4 with a solo home run during Wednesday's 5-3 win over the Pirates. After going 0-for-12 in the Nationals' first series of the season, Gallo put on some fireworks Wednesday, busting out of the slump with his first round-tripper of the campaign. It was just his second game with at least three hits in the last 366 days (108 games), dating back to his third appearance of the 2023 campaign. Although Gallo will rack up more than his fair share of strikeouts, he still has light-tower power against right-handed pitching.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Joey Gallo: Sitting versus southpaw
Gallo is absent from the lineup for Monday's contest against the Pirates, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports. Gallo started each of the Nationals' first three contests against a right-hander, but he went 0-for-12 with six strikeouts and will now take a seat versus lefty Marco Gonzales on Monday. Joey Meneses will handle first base in Gallo's stead.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Joey Gallo: Will be primary first baseman
Nationals manager Dave Martinez said Thursday that Gallo will be the team's primary first baseman this season, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports. When Gallo was signed in January, the plan was for him to be the club's regular left fielder. However, the Nats have since signed Jesse Winker and Eddie Rosario and Gallo has also dealt with a quad issue. Martinez didn't rule out the possibility of Gallo eventually playing some outfield, but for now he'll be the first baseman while mixing in some starts at designated hitter. The news means Joey Meneses will be the everyday DH, while Rosario looks like the favorite for left field duties.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Joey Gallo: Makes return to field
Gallo (quadricep) will start at first base and bat cleanup in Monday's Grapefruit League game against the Cardinals, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports. After experiencing a sore left quad following his third appearance of the spring back on Feb. 28, Gallo was out of the lineup for about a week before returning to action Thursday and Friday. He was limited to designated hitter duties on both days, but Gallo's ability to play the field Monday suggests that the quad injury is firmly in the rear-view mirror at this stage.... See More ... Nationals' Joey Gallo: Returns to lineup Thursday
Gallo (quad) is starting at designated hitter and batting cleanup for the Nationals on Thursday versus the Mets, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports. Gallo hasn't played in a little over a week due to a sore quad, but he's feeling well enough to at least hit Thursday. It's not clear when he might be ready to play the field. Gallo is 1-for-7 with a couple RBI so far at the plate so far this spring. He'll be used in left field, at first base and at DH for the Nats this season.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Joey Gallo: Limited by quad soreness
Gallo is currently limited to just hitting as he dealing with a sore quad, Chelsea Janes of The Washington Post reports. Nationals manager Dave Martinez indicated that the club is being cautious and Gallo could be ready to play defense in games next week. The 30-year-old slugger is expected to handle most of the playing time in left field for the Nats this season, with some first base and designated hitter mixed in.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Joey Gallo: Lands with Nats on one-year deal
Gallo signed a one-year, $5 million contract with the Nationals on Tuesday, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports. He'll have the opportunity to earn an additional $1 million in incentives. Gallo slashed just .177/.301/.440 last season with the Twins, although he did pop 21 home runs over 332 plate appearances. The 30-year-old would appear to be penciled in as the Nationals' regular left fielder, although he could see some action at first base, as well.... See More ... See Less -
Twins' Joey Gallo: Rehab assignment next week
Gallo (foot) will join Triple-A St. Paul next week to start a rehab assignment, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports. Gallo was placed on the 10-day injured list late last week with a left foot contusion. He should be healthy enough to rejoin the Twins before the end of the regular season, although it's not clear what kind of role he might have.... See More ... See Less -
Twins' Joey Gallo: Lands on IL
The Twins placed Gallo on the 10-day injured list Friday with a left foot contusion, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports. Gallo is just 2-for-22 with a homer and two RBI since Aug. 18, and he'll now be sidelined for at least the next 10 days. Alex Kirilloff (shoulder) was activated from the IL in a corresponding move.... See More ... See Less -
Twins' Joey Gallo: Losing playing time vs. righties
Gallo is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Brewers. Gallo finds himself on the bench for the fourth time in five games, with two of his absences coming against right-handed pitching and two coming versus left-handers. At this stage, the Twins have seemingly pulled the plug on Gallo as a strong-side platoon option at either first base or in left field. Aside from a four-hit, two-homer game Aug. 12 in Philadelphia, Gallo has otherwise gone 3-for-32 with 20 strikeouts and one extra-base hit on the month.... See More ... See Less -
Twins' Joey Gallo: On bench versus lefty
Gallo is not in the lineup Tuesday versus the Brewers. Gallo will be on the bench with lefty Wade Miley on the bump for the Brewers. Donovan Solano will take over at first base and bat leadoff.... See More ... See Less -
Twins' Joey Gallo: Takes seat Sunday
Gallo is not in the lineup for Sunday's game versus the Pirates. Gallo has a .212/.395/.485 slash line through 33 at-bats in August and will head to the bench Sunday for the second time in the past three games. Donovan Solano will receive another start at first base while Jordan Luplow and Matt Wallner (hand) man the corner outfield spots.... See More ... See Less -
Twins' Joey Gallo: Absent from lineup
Gallo is not in the lineup for Friday's contest against the Pirates. Gallo had been in the lineup for six of the last seven games, but he'll start this one on the bench. Donovan Solano will be at first base.... See More ... See Less
