Yates (3-0) earned the win after he pitched two scoreless innings, allowing a walk while striking two batters in Sunday's 3-2 extra-inning win over the Royals. Yates entered the game in the bottom of the eighth inning with the Rangers trailing 2-1 and he was able to work around a walk to keep it a one-run deficit going into the ninth. After Texas tied it up at 2-2, the right-hander returned for the following frame, setting the Royals down in order. The Rangers went on to win it in the 10th inning, earning Yates his third victory of the year. The 37-year-old has yet to allow an earned run this season while posting a 0.50 WHIP with five saves over 14 innings in 12 appearances.... See More ... See Less

Rangers' Kirby Yates: Remains spotless, grabs fifth save
Yates earned a save after he pitched a scoreless ninth inning, allowing one hit and a walk while striking out a batter in Sunday's 4-3 win over the Reds. Yates was called upon to protect the team's 4-3 lead in the top of the ninth inning, working around a pair of baserunners to secure his fifth save of the season. The right-hander has now gone 5-for-5 in save opportunities this season while he has pitched 12 scoreless frames over his first 11 appearances in 2024. On top of the spotless ERA, Yates also owns a sparkling 0.50 WHIP with a 10.5 K/9, and he appears to be locked in as the Rangers' closer moving forward.... See More ... See Less -
Rangers' Kirby Yates: Picks up fourth save
Yates struck out two batters in a perfect ninth inning to earn the save in Friday's 2-1 win over the Reds. Yates struck out Jonathan India and Jeimer Candelario to begin the ninth, giving him 13 punchouts in 11 innings out of the bullpen. The 37-year-old righty still has yet to allow a run this season, and he'll likely continue receiving the bulk of save opportunities as long as that remains the case.... See More ... See Less -
Rangers' Kirby Yates: Flawless in save chance
Yates secured a save in Sunday's 6-4 win over Atlanta, striking out one while allowing no baserunners in 1.1 scoreless innings. Yates entered in the eighth with Atlanta threatening with two men on and two outs and struck out Orlando Arcia to get out of the jam. The 37-year-old returned for the ninth and retired the side in order to lock down the save. Yates seems to have a firm grip on the closer role for now after picking up three saves and a win over the last week. He's yet to allow a run and has posted a 0.40 WHIP and 11:2 K:BB in 10 innings this year.... See More ... See Less -
Rangers' Kirby Yates: Notches four-out save
Yates earned the save in Thursday's 9-7 win over Detroit, allowing one hit while logging a strikeout in 1.1 scoreless innings. Yates entered with two outs in the eighth inning, striking out Spencer Torkelson to strand the tying and go-ahead runs on base before working around a two-out single in the ninth en route to his second save this season. Yates has yet to allow a run through his first eight appearances (8.2 innings) this year. The 37-year-old veteran has saves in two of the Rangers' last four games, as he looks to be firming his grasp on the ninth-inning job in Texas.... See More ... See Less -
Rangers' Kirby Yates: Potential save becomes win
Yates (2-0) picked up the win in Wednesday's 5-4 victory over the Tigers. He walked one and struck out four over 1.1 scoreless innings. The Rangers had a 4-1 lead entering the bottom of the sixth inning but allowed Detroit to score single runs in the next three frames to tie the game. Yates entered to get the final out of the eighth inning and was the pitcher of record when Josh Smith doubled in the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth. Yates, who has not allowed a run over 7.1 innings, has become the closer following the removal of Jose Leclerc from that role.... See More ... See Less -
Rangers' Kirby Yates: Fares well in first save
Yates secured the save after throwing a perfect ninth inning Monday against the Tigers. After the game, manager Bruce Bochy noted that the team likes where it's at in terms of the closer role, Shawn McFarland of The Dallas Morning News reports. Bochy went on to mention that the club will continue to weigh its options at closer, but he likes the way Yates has been throwing the ball so far this season, per McFarland. The right-hander has yet to surrender a run in six appearances, fanning five batters and walking one over six frames.... See More ... See Less -
Rangers' Kirby Yates: Throws scoreless ninth
Yates allowed a walk and struck out one over a hitless and scoreless ninth inning in Friday's 12-8 win over Houston. The Rangers raced to a big lead before the Astros made a late push to force manager Bruce Bochy to deploy his trusted arms -- David Robertson, then Yates -- to close out the game. Bochy told Jeff Wilson of RangersToday.com that closer Jose Leclerc was temporarily being moved to low-leverage situations after Leclerc pitched the sixth inning Friday, when Texas was leading, 12-3. Yates has not allowed a run over five appearances and could be in the mix for save opportunities along with Robertson.... See More ... See Less -
Rangers' Kirby Yates: Throws scoreless frame
Yates allowed one hit and one walk while striking out one over one inning in Thursday's spring game against the Diamondbacks. Yates made his third Cactus League appearance and has allowed a run, three hits and one walk while striking out six over three innings. Last year, when Yates posted a 3.28 ERA with 80 strikeouts over 60.1 innings, was the right-hander's first fully healthy year since 2019. He has closing experience and will be part of a late-inning crew that includes Jose Leclerc, David Robertson and Josh Sborz.... See More ... See Less -
Rangers' Kirby Yates: Inks one-year deal with Texas
Yates signed a one-year contract Tuesday with the Rangers, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. The one-year deal will be worth about $4.5 million, per Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News. Yates registered a steady 3.28 ERA with 80 strikeouts over 60.1 innings of relief for Atlanta in 2023, even tallying five saves along the way. The 36-year-old right-hander projects to fill a setup role with the reigning World Series champions in 2024. He turns 37 years old in March.... See More ... See Less -
Kirby Yates: Free agent after option declined
Atlanta declined Yates' $5.75 million option for 2024 on Monday. The move comes as somewhat of a surprise, as Yates posted a 3.28 ERA and 80:37 K:BB over 60.1 frames for Atlanta this past season. He will turn 37 in March and his control has regressed, but Yates' bat-missing ability should draw plenty of interest on the free-agent market from clubs in need of a late-inning relief arm.... Braves' Kirby Yates: PIcks up extra-inning save
Yates picked up the save Monday against Philadelphia, striking out two in a perfect inning. Closer Raisel Iglesias entered the ninth with a save opportunity but allowed the Phillies to tie the game and send it to extras. When Atlanta reclaimed the lead, Yates needed only 14 pitches to slam the door and earn his fourth save of the season. While save opportunities are rare, Yates holds a 2.75 ERA and 1.17 WHIP with 75 strikeouts in 55.2 innings as he maintains a high-leverage role in the backend of the Atlanta bullpen.... See More ... Braves' Kirby Yates: Snags third save
Yates walked one and struck out one in a scoreless inning to earn the save in Friday's 6-3 win over the Dodgers. Raisel Iglesias had pitched three consecutive days entering Friday, allowing Yates a rare save chance. He got the job done on 21 pitches (14 strikes). Yates has three saves, eight holds and three blown saves with a 7-1 record, 2.73 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 69:34 K:BB through 52.2 innings this season in a high-leverage role.... See More ... See Less -
Braves' Kirby Yates: Pockets another win
Yates (5-0) picked up the win Sunday over the Brewers, striking out one in a perfect inning of relief. The right-hander has become the top vulture on MLB's top team, collecting four of his five wins since the beginning of June -- a stretch in which he's posted a 3.48 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 28:7 K:BB through 20.2 innings. Yates should retain a high-leverage role over the final months for Atlanta, even if the front office brings in more bullpen reinforcements at the trade deadline.... See More ... See Less -
Braves' Kirby Yates: Earns second save
Yates walked two in a scoreless ninth inning Friday against the Brewers while striking out three to earn his second save of the season. Yates needed 32 pitches to finish off the 6-4 win. He also gave up a run in his previous two appearances but was still given the save opportunity with Raisel Iglesias having thrown 22 pitches the night before. Yates lowered his ERA to 3.38 with a 52:21 K:BB through 37.1 frames.... See More ... See Less -
Braves' Kirby Yates: Collects second win
Yates (2-0) picked up the win in Friday's victory over the Nationals, striking out two in a perfect eighth inning. The veteran righty got the call with Atlanta down 2-1, and after shutting down the Nats on 16 pitches (11 strikes) he was rewarded when the offense produced two runs in the bottom of the frame. Yates' control still comes and goes as he returns to regular duty for the first time since 2019, but he has emerged as a solid option since the beginning of May, posting a 2.84 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 19:10 K:BB over his last 12.2 innings.... Braves' Kirby Yates: Snags win in relief
Yates (1-0) picked up the win in Wednesday's victory over the Reds, walking one and striking out one in a scoreless eighth inning. The veteran right-hander hasn't had a regular spot in a big-league bullpen since 2019 due to injuries, tossing only 11.1 big-league innings over the last three seasons, but Yates won a spot in the Atlanta bullpen in camp and recorded his first MLB win since 2018 on Wednesday. The 36-year-old has been far from sharp though, posting a 5.79 ERA and 4:6 K:BB through 4.2 innings to begin the season, and he's unlikely to see consistent high-leverage work without improving his control.... Braves' Kirby Yates: Completes live session
Yates (elbow) threw his first live batting practice session of spring training Wednesday, Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. Yates made his return from March 2021 Tommy John surgery in August last season, but he stayed healthy for about a month before succumbing to inflammation in his surgically repaired elbow. Fortunately for Yates, the long offseason provided ample time for him to overcome the setback, and he reported to spring training without any restrictions. Yates is only four years removed from a season in which he was arguably the game's top reliever, but now that he's in his mid-thirties and has just 15 relief appearances at the big-league level under his belt since that banner 2019 campaign with the Padres, Atlanta is simply hoping that he can serve as a dependable setup option in front of closer Raisel Iglesias.... Braves' Kirby Yates: Throws bullpen Friday
Yates (elbow) threw a bullpen session Friday, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports. Yates has been sidelined since mid-September due to right elbow inflammation but has been optimistic he'll be able to return this season. It's not yet clear whether he'll be available for the playoffs, but he's trending in the right direction and would likely be able to have a relatively normal offseason, even if he isn't cleared to return to game action.... Braves' Kirby Yates: Doesn't think season is done
Yates (elbow) believes he'll be able to return this season, Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. Yates didn't make his season debut until Aug. 10, and he only made it nine outings into his return from Tommy John surgery before hitting the injured list with renewed elbow troubles. An MRI didn't show anything worse than inflammation, so he remains optimistic that he'll be back before the end of the year. He didn't show much to get fantasy players excited during his brief time with the team, however, as he gave up four runs in seven innings while striking out six and walking five.... See More ...
