Willson Contreras' first year in St. Louis was a bumpy one with a .438 winning percentage being the organization's worst since 1995. The drama started early with his new team, as he was pushed out from behind the plate in May due to poor defensive metrics, since the Cardinals apparently didn't realize he's always been a bat-first catcher. He still ended up making 97 appearances at catcher compared to 30 at designated hitter, but the early-season issues set the tone for what ended up being an awful season for St. Louis. Individually however, Contreras was his usual productive self offensively, as he delivered a fourth straight 20-homer campaign (the shortened 2020 season notwithstanding) and a 127 wRC+, which tied for best in baseball among catchers with at least 450 plate appearances. Volume is the only real concern for fantasy managers at this point -- his 495 plate appearances in 2023 being the second-highest total of his career -- with the lack of opportunities keeping his run production at modest levels (55 runs, 67 RBI last season). Despite that ceiling, Contreras should be locked in as one of the better fantasy catchers again in 2024.

  • Cardinals' Willson Contreras: Sent to IL with forearm fracture

The Cardinals placed Contreras on the 10-day injured list Wednesday. Contreras fractured his left forearm when he was struck by J.D. Martinez's bat on a catcher's interference call during Tuesday's 7-5 loss. He will undergo surgery Wednesday to repair the fracture and is expected to miss 6-to-8 weeks. Ivan Herrera will be the Cardinals' primary catcher while Contreras is out, while Pedro Pages has been recalled from Triple-A Memphis to take Contreras' roster spot and serve as the team's No. 2 backstop.

  • Cardinals' Willson Contreras: Set for surgery

Contreras said Tuesday that he will undergo surgery on his fractured left forearm within the next several days and will miss 6-to-8 weeks, John Denton of MLB.com reports. After getting hit in the forearm by a swing during the second inning of Tuesday's game, Contreras will officially be sidelined for up to two months -- a huge blow to a Cardinals offense that already ranks near the bottom of the NL in OPS (.636) and runs (126). Ivan Herrera is now the favorite to receive the bulk of starts behind the plate while Contreras is out, and it's likely the Cardinals promote Pedro Pages from Triple-A Memphis to be the new backup.

  • Cardinals' Willson Contreras: Suffers arm fracture

Contreras fractured his left arm during Tuesday's game against the Mets, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports. Contreras had to leave Tuesday's contest in the second inning after his arm was struck by a J.D. Martinez swing. He will almost certainly spend an extended period of time on the injured list, leaving Ivan Herrera as the Cardinals' new primary catcher. Pedro Pages was pulled from his game at Triple-A Memphis shortly after Contreras went down and may be promoted to serve as Herrera's backup.

  • Cardinals' Willson Contreras: Exits with hand injury

Contreras was removed from Tuesday's game against the Mets with an apparent left hand injury, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports. Contreras was hit in the hand by a J.D. Martinez swing during the second inning of Tuesday's contest, and he appeared to be in a significant amount of pain before walking off the field. The 31-year-old backstop will almost certainly go in for X-rays, and the Cardinals should offer an update on his status in the near future.

  • Cardinals' Willson Contreras: Homers in loss

Contreras went 1-for-4 with a solo home run and three strikeouts in Sunday's 5-1 loss to the White Sox. Contreras accounted for all the offense for St. Louis on Sunday, launching a solo shot off of Garrett Crochet in the bottom of the fourth inning. The long ball was his sixth of the year and second in the last four contests. Contreras is now batting .275 with six home runs, 11 RBI, 18 runs scored and two stolen bases over 102 at-bats in 29 games in 2024.

  • Cardinals' Willson Contreras: Perfect day at dish

Contreras went 3-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and a walk in Friday's win over the White Sox. Contreras scored runs in the first and fifth innings, both coming via Nolan Arenado doubles. Since his last multi-hit game April 17, Contreras had been stuck in a 9-for-43 (.209) slump over 12 games. Despite the streakiness, he still owns a strong .281/.395/.531 slash line through 114 plate appearances.

  • Cardinals' Willson Contreras: Provides lone run in loss

Contreras went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 4-1 loss to the Tigers. Contreras also struck out three times Wednesday for the third consecutive game. He'll likely be happy to put the Tigers in the rear-view mirror after going 1-for-13 with nine strikeouts during the three-game series in Detroit. That poor stretch has dropped Contreras to a .258/.373/.505 slash line on the year, and he's added five homers, 10 RBI, 14 runs scored, eight doubles and a stolen base through 110 plate appearances. Contreras has caught four of the Cardinals' last six games, so it appears he's managing his lingering soreness from a left hand injury fairly well.

  • Cardinals' Willson Contreras: Pops homer Friday

Contreras went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and a walk in Friday's 4-2 win over the Mets. The Cardinals mustered just five hits, but Contreras and Alec Burleson provided a pair of homers to make it work. Contreras continues to play through a lingering hand injury, and while it's limited his ability to catch, he's been fine at the plate. Since the injury occurred April 3, he's gone 17-for-52 (.327) with two homers, six doubles and five RBI. For the season, he's slashing .296/.425/.563 with four homers, nine RBI, 12 runs scored, seven doubles and a stolen base over 21 contests. Contreras will continue to split time between catcher and designated hitter.

  • Cardinals' Willson Contreras: In Wednesday's lineup

Contreras (hand) will start at designated hitter and bat second in Wednesday's game against the Diamondbacks. He made an early exit from Tuesday's loss to Arizona with lingering left hand soreness, although Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said afterward that Contreras' removal had more to do with the lopsided score. Contreras intends to continue playing through discomfort, but might see more reps at DH than catcher, opening up starts behind the plate for Ivan Herrera.

  • Cardinals' Willson Contreras: Will play through hand injury

Contreras admitted after Tuesday's loss to the Diamondbacks that his left hand "doesn't feel good" but is "nothing that will keep me away from the game," Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. Contreras missed four games earlier this month with an injury that was suffered back on April 3. He homered in his first plate appearance for the Cardinals' lone run Tuesday before eventually exiting after the fifth inning in the blowout loss. Manager Oliver Marmol said the lopsided score was the bigger reason for Contreras' departure, and the catcher seems adamant that he will continue to play through the injury. Contreras is slashing .326/.426/.500 in 13 games since getting hurt, so while it's clear he's not 100 percent, it does not appear to be affecting his offensive performance.

  • Cardinals' Willson Contreras: Goes yard in blowout loss

Contreras went 1-for-2 with a solo home run and a walk in Tuesday's 14-1 loss to the Diamondbacks. Contreras provided a positive start for the Cardinals with his first-inning blast, but it quickly went off the rails for the home team after that. The catcher saw his 11-game hitting streak end Monday, but he's still been one of the Cardinals' most consistent bats so far. He's slashing .292/.418/.523 with three homers, eight RBI, 10 runs scored, six doubles and a stolen base over 19 contests. Manager Oliver Marmol has committed to getting both Contreras and Ivan Herrera regular at-bats, so they have often shared catcher and designated hitter in recent weeks.

  • Cardinals' Willson Contreras: Back in lineup at DH

Contreras (hand) will serve as the Cardinals' designated hitter and No. 3 batter Tuesday versus the Phillies. Contreras still isn't able to squeeze his catcher's mitt due to lingering soreness in his left hand and admits that "it does bother me to swing a little bit," per John Denton of MLB.com. However, he's feeling well enough to DH in this one and is hoping to be ready to catch by this weekend. Ivan Herrera is getting another start behind the plate Tuesday.

  • Cardinals' Willson Contreras: Expected to play Tuesday

Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said Monday that he's confident Contreras (hand) will be ready to return to the lineup Tuesday, John Denton of MLB.com reports. Marmol also revealed that Contreras wasn't actually scratched from Monday's lineup, but rather he was never meant to be included in the lineup that was ultimately released. However, while he will sit out a fourth straight game with a sore left hand, it sounds like he should be ready to go Tuesday. Ivan Herrera is getting another start at catcher Monday.

  • Cardinals' Willson Contreras: Scratched from lineup

Contreras (hand) has been scratched from the Cardinals' lineup Monday, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports. Conteras had appeared set to return from a three-game absence with left hand soreness, but evidently he's still not quite ready. Consider him day-to-day still for the time being. Ivan Herrera will sub in again at catcher.

  • Cardinals' Willson Contreras: Returns to St. Louis lineup

Contreras (hand) will start at catcher and bat third in Monday's game against the Phillies, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports. Contreras missed the entirety of the Cardinals' three-game series against the Marlins with soreness in his left hand, but he's ready for the series opener versus the Phillies. The 31-year-old boasts a .979 OPS with two home runs in his first six contests this season.

  • Cardinals' Willson Contreras: Sitting again Sunday

Contreras (hand) is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Marlins, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports. Contreras was initially in the lineup Saturday before being scratched as he continues to battle hand soreness after being hit by a pitch Wednesday, and he won't return to the starting nine for Sunday's series finale versus Miami. Ivan Herrera will receive another look behind the plate for St. Louis, but the Cardinals anticipate that Contreras will return to action at some point during the club's upcoming three-game series with the Phillies that begins Monday, per John Denton of MLB.com.

  • Cardinals' Willson Contreras: Scratched from lineup

Contreras (hand) was scratched from the Cardinals' lineup ahead of Saturday's game against Miami, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports. Contreras was originally slated to serve as St. Louis' designated hitter Saturday, but he is evidently still bothered by his left hand after getting hit by a pitch Wednesday against the Padres. The decision to remove him from the lineup seems to be a precautionary measure, and the 31-year-old backstop should still be considered day-to-day. Alec Burleson will fill in as the replacement DH on Saturday.

  • Cardinals' Willson Contreras: Returns to lineup

Contreras (hand) is in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Marlins, Lynn Worthy of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. Contreras sat out Thursday's series opener versus Miami after getting hit in the hand by a pitch Wednesday. He managed to avoid a fracture and will now return as St. Louis' DH while Ivan Herrera starts behind the dish.

  • Cardinals' Willson Contreras: Not dealing with fracture

Contreras did not suffer a fracture in his hand and is hoping to be available to play Saturday versus the Marlins, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports. Contreras was held out of the lineup Thursday after being hit in the hand with a pitch the day prior. It's unclear whether he'll be able to start behind the plate Saturday against Miami, but X-rays came back clean and it doesn't appear that he'll be in for a long-term absence.

  • Cardinals' Willson Contreras: Won't play Thursday

Contreras (hand) won't be in the lineup for Thursday's game against the Marlins, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports. Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak said the team isn't yet at the point of needing to add another catcher to the 26-man active roster, but he didn't rule it out in the future. Contreras was hit in the left hand by a pitch in Wednesday's loss to San Diego, and the Cardinals are still waiting for swelling in the hand to go down before he can undergo X-rays. If Contreras has to miss time, Ivan Herrera would be in line to serve as St. Louis' primary catcher, and Pedro Pages would likely be recalled from Triple-A Memphis.
