Williamson (shoulder) struck out four and allowed one earned run on five hits and one walk over 3.2 innings Sunday in his rehab start with Triple-A Louisville. Sunday's outing was Williamson's first with Louisville but the second overall of his rehab assignment, which he began with High-A Dayton on May 14. Williamson, who has been on the shelf all season with a left shoulder strain, is eligible for activation next week, but he'll likely need at least another rehab start or two to get fully stretched out for a traditional starting role. With Nick Lodolo (groin) tentatively in line to return from the 15-day injured list Monday to bring the Cincinnati rotation back to full strength, Williamson may have to settle for a bullpen role once activated, if the Reds don't elect to option him to Louisville to remain on a starter's schedule.... Reds' Brandon Williamson: Reporting to High-A Dayton
Williamson (shoulder) will report to High-A Dayton next week, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. The move to Dayton suggests Williamson is nearing a rehab assignment. The Reds are targeting the end of May for his return.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Brandon Williamson: Moved to 60-day IL
The Reds transferred Williamson (shoulder) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Wednesday. The move frees up a spot on the 40-man roster for first baseman/designated hitter Mike Ford, who signed a one-year deal with the Reds. Williamson will begin a rehab assignment Thursday in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League as he works his way back from a left shoulder strain, but he'll need some time to get ramped back up. He won't be eligible for activation until late May as a result of his move to the 60-day IL.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Brandon Williamson: Set for rehab assignment
Williamson (shoulder) is expected to begin a minor-league rehab assignment with Triple-A Louisville on May 9, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Williamson has missed the entirety of the 2024 campaign to this point while nursing a left shoulder strain, but he appears to be on the cusp of returning to the mound. He'll likely need to make a few starts with Louisville before he can be activated from the injured list. The southpaw produced a 4.46 ERA and 1.28 WHIP with 98 strikeouts over 117 innings in 23 starts with the Reds last season.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Brandon Williamson: Shifts to injured list
The Reds placed Williamson (shoulder) on the 15-day injured list Wednesday. The left-hander exited his March 17 start with a left shoulder strain and won't be available to begin the regular season. Williamson was expected to be shut down from throwing for a few days, but it's unclear where he currently stands in his recovery. Andrew Abbott is rounding out Cincinnati's rotation, at least until Nick Lodolo (lower leg) is ready.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Brandon Williamson: Bound for injured list
Williamson (shoulder) will begin the season on the injured list, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Williamson left Sunday's game against Cleveland early due to shoulder soreness, and his injury is apparently severe enough to cause him to miss the first few weeks of the regular season. Manager David Bell said Tuesday that Williamson will be shut down from throwing for a couple of days, and there is no timetable currently in place for his return. With Williamson out, Andrew Abbott will fill the final spot in the Reds' Opening Day rotation.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Brandon Williamson: Leaves game with soreness
Williamson left Sunday's spring training game against the Guardians with shoulder soreness, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Manager David Bell revealed why Williamson had to leave the game early. The pitcher was taken out of the game due to soreness in his left shoulder. The Reds are hopeful that it is nothing serious. In three spring training appearances, the 25-year-old had allowed four earned runs with nine strikeouts and zero walks in 9.0 innings.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Brandon Williamson: Makes second spring appearance
Williamson allowed three runs on five hits and struck out three over three innings in Friday's spring start against Arizona. This was Williamson's second Cactus League appearance and first start. The Diamondbacks touched him for runs in the first two innings, before the left-hander ripped off a perfect third frame. Williamson was included as the fifth starter in the latest roster projection from Mark Sheldon of MLB.com. That represents a change from Sheldon's first projection, which had Nick Lodolo (tibia) at the back end of the rotation. Recent news that Lodolo will undergo additional testing clouds the final spot.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Brandon Williamson: Nabs fifth win
Williamson (5-5) earned the win in Friday's 19-2 victory in St. Louis after allowing two runs on five hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out two. Williamson cruised to an easy win thanks to massive run support, but he still delivered his first quality start since Aug. 29 and first win since Aug. 7. The 25-year-old lefty will end his rookie campaign with a 4.46 ERA and a 98:39 K:BB through 117 frames. Williamson registered a 5.55 ERA over his final five starts.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Brandon Williamson: Pulled in fifth frame
Williamson did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing two runs on four hits and one walk over 4.1 innings against Pittsburgh. He struck out three. Williamson allowed only two baserunners through four innings but was tagged by a Jack Suwinski solo homer to lead off the fifth. Williamson then allowed a one-out double to Henry Davis followed by an RBI single by Jason Delay and was removed after 74 pitches. Following a stretch during which he worked into the sixth in eight of nine starts, Williamson has failed to get through the fifth in each of his last three appearances. The rookie has started 22 games for the Reds spanning 111 innings and will carry a 4.54 ERA into his final start of the regular season, scheduled to take place next weekend in St. Louis.... Reds' Brandon Williamson: Loses to Mets
Williamson (4-5) yielded three runs on six hits and a walk over four innings Sunday, striking out two and taking a loss against the Mets. Williamson began the game with a pair of scoreless frames before coughing up three runs in the third. In two starts since returning from the COVID-19 injured list, he's allowed eight runs in eight innings. He's produced a 4.68 ERA in eight outings since the start of August. Williamson's next start is projected to be at home against the Pirates.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Brandon Williamson: Struggles in return
Williamson did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing five runs on seven hits and two walks over four innings against the Tigers. He struck out four. Williamson returned from the COVID-19-related injured list Tuesday and lasted only four innings, his shortest outing since July 6. The 25-year-old rookie looked especially rusty during a 29-pitch first inning in which he allowed three runs on five hits. Williamson will look to bounce back in his next start, which is slated to come on the road against the Mets this weekend.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Brandon Williamson: Activated for Tuesday's start
Williamson (illness) was activated from the COVID-19-related injured list ahead of his scheduled start Tuesday at Detroit. Williamson wound up missing a couple of weeks while battling COVID-like symptoms. The 25-year-old left-hander returns to a 4-4 record, 4.20 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 87:33 K:BB across the 98.2 innings covering his first 19 starts.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Brandon Williamson: Slated to return Tuesday
Williamson (illness) will return from the COVID-19-related injured list to start Tuesday against the Tigers, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Williamson will have gone exactly two weeks between starts, as he was placed on the COVID-19 list Sept. 2 after making his last appearance for the Reds four days earlier. The left-hander had turned in two straight quality starts before going on the list, but he's been an up-and-down performer this season and might not be ready for a full workload Tuesday.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Brandon Williamson: Won't start Sunday
Williamson was placed on the COVID-19 injured list and won't start as scheduled Sunday against the Cubs, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Williamson joins Hunter Greene, Ben Lively and Fernando Cruz as Reds pitchers on the COVID list. No replacement starter has been named for Sunday, but Connor Phillips, Michael Mariot and Levi Stoudt are potential options to be called up from Triple-A Louisville.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Brandon Williamson: Tosses six scoreless frames
Williamson ended with a no-decision against Arizona on Thursday, allowing six hits and one walk while striking out six batters over six scoreless innings. All six of the hits against Williamson were singles, and he picked up his fifth quality start of the campaign. The southpaw struck out exactly six batters for the third straight game, and he's pitched well over that stretch despite not picking up any wins, posting a 2.60 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 18:4 K:BB over 17.1 innings. Williamson has had a few blow-ups this season but has been mostly consistent, giving up three or fewer earned runs in 14 of his 18 outings. He's at a 4.18 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 82:33 K:BB over 92.2 frames overall.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Brandon Williamson: Allows one run
Williamson yielded one run on two hits and two walks over 5.2 innings in a Game 1 loss to the Pirates during Sunday's doubleheader. He struck out six and did not factor in the decision. Williamson allowed a leadoff single to Ke'Bryan Hayes before retiring 12 straight batters. The Pirates then broke through with a run in the fifth inning. Williamson has given up just two runs while registering a 15:2 K:BB over his last two outings. His season ERA dropped to 4.33 with a 70:31 K:BB through 81 innings. Williamson's next outing is projected to be at home against the Blue Jays.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Brandon Williamson: Start postponed
Williamson's scheduled start Saturday against the Pirates was postponed due to inclement weather. The Pirates and Reds will play a doubleheader Sunday to make up for Saturday's postponed contest, and Williamson will presumably start in one of the two games. The 25-year-old southpaw holds a 4.32 ERA and 1.26 WHIP across his last three starts.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Brandon Williamson: Can't get out of fifth inning
Williamson allowed five runs on four hits and two walks while striking out seven batters in a no-decision against the Cubs on Wednesday. Williamson got enough early run support to hold a 5-3 lead through four innings, but he allowed two of the first three batters he faced to reach base in the fifth before getting the hook. Both runners came around to score after his departure, marking the first time Williamson has allowed five runs in an outing since he yielded six to the Dodgers on June 7. The southpaw as least managed to contribute seven punchouts in the start Wednesday despite notching just four swings-and-misses. Williamson came out of the All-Star break by picking up two wins and posting a 2.55 ERA over his first three starts, but it's uncertain if he'll hold onto a rotation spot when Hunter Greene (hip) and Nick Lodolo (lower leg) return from the injured list, which is expected to happen later this month. Williamson should have at least a few more starts to prove himself before the Reds need to make that decision.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Brandon Williamson: Escapes with win
Williamson (3-2) allowed two runs on eight hits and four walks while striking out two over 5.2 innings to pick up the win Friday over the Dodgers. Williamson's 12 baserunners were by far his most in an appearance this season, but he was able to work around the trouble. He finishes July having not allowed more than two runs in any outing, and he gave up just seven runs over 25.2 innings across his five starts for the month. Williamson has a 4.48 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 48:27 K:BB through 64.1 innings through 13 starts this year. He's projected for a road start versus the Cubs next week.... See More ... See Less
