Mariners' Franklin Gutierrez: Re-signs with Mariners

Gutierrez signed a one-year, major league contract with the Mariners on Wednesday. After missing all of 2014 with gastrointestinal issues and spending three months in the minors to open 2015, Gutierrez went on to bat .292/.354/.620 with 15 homers in just 59 games with Seattle. He did almost as much damage against right-handed pitching as he did against lefties, but Gutierrez still has a .658 career OPS against right-handed pitching, so he may be limited to a platoon role in left field to begin 2016.

Mariners hold OF Franklin Gutierrez out of Thursday's lineup

Mariners outfielder Franklin Gutierrez is not in the lineup for Thursday's game against the Royals. Gutierrez has recorded a hit in six straight games, but he will get a night off in order to open up a spot in the lineup for another left-handed hitter - Logan Morrison, indirectly -- against Royals starter Johnny Cueto.

Mariners OF Franklin Gutierrez goes deep in third straight game

Mariners outfielder Franklin Gutierrez went 1 for 3 with a solo home run in a 10-1 loss to the Rangers on Saturday. It was a rough game for the Mariners, but the breakout season continues for Gutierrez. He has now homered in three straight and has five dingers over his last 10 games. The home run came off lefty Cole Hamels and that's been the trend for Gutierrez all season, as he's killing southpaws. The Venezuelan has a .340 average against lefties with an OPS well above 1.000. The one problem with that is that the Mariners face only one lefty in six games next week.

Two-tater Sunday keeps Mariners OF Franklin Gutierrez hot

If Mariners outfielder Franklin Gutierrez somehow maintains the pace the rest of the year that he has in limited at-bats this season, he will produce his best-ever slash line numbers. And it won't even be close. Gutierrez remained on an uncharacteristic roll Sunday with two more home runs in a win over Boston. He slammed a solo shot in the first and three-run job in the third. He has four home runs over his last six games. His slash line now sits at .313/.348/.651. The best slugging percentage of his career was .503 in 2014.
