Martin was reassigned to AHL San Antonio on Wednesday. Although having a less than stellar team in front of him may have contributed to Martin's three losses during this stint with the big club, allowing 13 goals on 96 shots over that span just isn't going to cut it at the NHL level. Jeremy Smith has been recalled from the minors in a corresponding move.
Martin saved just 35 of 40 shots during Wednesday's loss to Los Angeles. Martin has now allowed 13 goals through his three starts with a .865 save percentage, and with Colorado redefining tanking, his virtual outlook is bleak. There aren't many fantasy settings where you should feel confident about starting Martin until he shows signs of competence at the highest level.
Martin will defend the net Wednesday against the Kings, Mike Chambers of the Denver Post reports. The 21-year-old netminder's stats aren't very impressive, especially at the top level. In two starts for the Avs this season, the youngster has been beaten eight times and compiled just an .857 save percentage. His numbers at the AHL level are a bit better, but not enough to warrant fantasy ownership in the vast majority of leagues. With Semyon Varlamov (groin) out for the remainder of 2016-17, Calvin Pickard figures to take on the lead role for between the pipes, while Martin could receive the occasional start as a backup option.
Martin was recalled from AHL San Antonio on Monday, TSN reports. With the 2017 NHL All-Star break in the books and starting goalie Semyon Varlamov undergoing season-ending hip surgery, it's expected that Martin will be up with the parent club indefinitely, serving as the No. 2 option behind Calvin Pickard. However, be forewarned that the Avs have a putrid minus-63 goal differential this season, making it difficult to trust most players on the team with the goalie spot being particularly vulnerable.
Martin was reassigned to AHL San Antonio on Thursday, Terry Frei of The Denver Post reports. This move is clearly intended to get Martin some additional play time, with Semyon Varlamov (groin) out for the year. The 21-year-old Martin figures to be the backup to Calvin Pickard the rest of the way. Martin is still looking for his first NHL win after going 0-1-1 in two starts against the Sharks.
