Lopez was outrighted to Triple-A Gwinnett on Monday.
After going unclaimed off waivers, Lopez will remain in the Atlanta organization as a depth catcher in the high minors. Since Gwinnett teammate Alex Jackson already has a spot on the 40-man roster, he'll presumably rank ahead of Lopez for a promotion in the event the big club requires another catcher beyond Brian McCann and Tyler Flowers.

Lopez was never likely to supplant either Tyler Flowers or Brian McCann in the Braves' catching plans. Lopez will be ready at the Triple-A level should one of that pair get injured, but his .184/.270/.322 line in 76 big-league games means he's unlikely to be much of a fantasy asset when called upon.

Braves' Raffy Lopez: Traded to Atlanta
Lopez was dealt to the Braves from San Diego on Thursday in exchange for cash considerations or a player to be named later.
Lopez spent a majority of the past season at the Triple-A level, though he did play in 37 games for the Padres while serving as a reserve catcher. He slashed just .176/.265/.284 with three home runs and 13 RBI in those contests. The 31-year-old shouldn't be counted on to provide much value for fantasy purposes moving forward. Lopez will add depth at the catching position for Atlanta while this move frees up a spot on the 40-man roster for the Padres.

The 30-year-old developed some late-career power last year, contributing 20 homers across three levels, after failing to tally more than eight in any season prior. He continued his power surge with seven homers in just 19 games with Triple-A El Paso prior to his recent callup. Lopez is clearly on the strong side of a platoon with A.J. Ellis, making him the desired target in deep one-catcher and two-catcher leagues until Austin Hedges (elbow) returns from the disabled list (which may not be until mid-May).

Lopez will join his fifth organization in four years after he was outrighted from the Blue Jays' 40-man roster following the 2017 campaign. He offers some intriguing pop as a catcher, as he swatted 16 homers across 73 games between Double-A New Hampshire and Triple-A Buffalo while adding another four in 24 games with the big club. He'll have to improve his defense if he wants to make an impact behind the dish at the majors, however, as he caught just one of 17 attempted base stealers with Toronto last season. Lopez should get a chance to compete for a reserve spot on the Opening Day roster.
