Waiver Wire: Clay Buchholz and Stephen Vogt make good first impression
by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer

Clay Buchholz looked every bit like an ace Monday. (USATSI)
Clay Buchholz looked every bit like an ace Monday. (USATSI)

Don't know who to pick up?

We'll never leave you guessing -- not this year. Chris Towers introduced the concept yesterday with a heavy-duty weekend edition of the waiver wire mini-column, but in case you missed it, he, Al Melchior and I are going to take turns reacting to the previous day's events, suggesting waiver claims to make -- or, in some cases, not make -- in response. We'll keep it bite-sized and to the point so that you can get through it quickly and move on with your life knowing that tomorrow is another day.

Here are the three players spurring me to action today:

Clay Buchholz, SP, Red Sox (86 percent owned)

Only the Red Sox, with their rotation full of No. 4 starters, could call Clay Buchholz as an ace, but he certainly looked the part Monday, striking out nine Phillies over seven scoreless innings. And really, he's always had this potential. He's just never been able to tap into it consistently. He looked like the front-runner for the AL Cy Young in 2013, remember, when he had a 1.71 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 8.6 strikeouts per nine innings over his first 12 starts, but then a neck injury derailed his season. Last year, it was a knee injury that plagued him, and we heard over and over again he was a mess mechanically. So when he has a start like this one, particularly after a long layoff to rest and make corrections, it's reason enough to take a flier on him in even in shallower leagues if you have a spot to play with.

Stephen Vogt, 1B, Athletics (28 percent owned)

With an ownership percentage of 28, Vogt is the catcher nobody wants. There's a reason for it, of course. Technically speaking, he isn't a catcher in standard CBSSports.com leagues, at least not yet. He needs five games at the position to gain eligibility there. He got his first Monday, going 2 for 4 with a home run and a double against the Rangers. If last year's numbers underwhelm you, keep in mind he hit .361 (53 for 147) with five home runs and a .931 OPS in 44 games before a foot injury that ultimately required surgery had him in and out of the lineup the rest of the way. He may sit against some left-handers, but all catchers sit on occasion. Once he becomes eligible at catcher, perhaps by the end of this week, he'll probably be in my top 12, making him must-own already in two-catcher leagues and borderline in one-catcher leagues.

Chris Hatcher, RP, Dodgers (6 percent owned)

No doubt, Buddy Carlyle was the surprising player to record a save on opening day, but Hatcher might actually have some staying power. To quote the Dodgers' official team web site, Hatcher "apparently will be the interim closer until Kenley Jansen returns, except Mattingly won't announce it." Indeed, Mattingly likes to play things close to the vest. He still hasn't officially named Joc Pederson the starter in center field. Hatcher is as good as anyone the Dodgers could go with -- their bullpen isn't the best apart from injured closer Kenley Jansen -- but then, Jansen isn't so injured anymore, now seven weeks into his recovery from foot surgery. Four weeks of closing might amount to eight saves for Hatcher, if you're lucky, so if you're in a league deep enough that every save counts, go ahead and make a play for him.

Mets' Buddy Carlyle picks up first career save in Opening Day win
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

With Jenrry Mejia sidelined due to an elbow injury, Mets relievers Jerry Blevins and Buddy Carlyle pitched the ninth inning of Monday's 3-1 win against the Nationals.

The left-hander Blevins kicked off the ninth inning against Bryce Harper, who bats left-handed. Harper lined out to right.

Carlyle then replaced Blevins, and finished off the win by getting Ryan Zimmerman and Wilson Ramos to ground out. It was his first career save.

After Monday's win, manager Terry Collins indicated Jeurys Familia would likely be the closer if Mejia goes on the disabled list. Bobby Parnell, who is expected to compete for the closer's role once healthy, is on the disabled list to begin the season.

Report: Mets to go with four-man bench; Eric Campbell likely snubbed
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com

The Mets are expected to go with an eight-man bullpen and a four-man bench, snubbing Eric Campbell from an Opening Day roster spot, according to ESPN.

Campbell hit .255 (14 for 55) with six doubles, one triple, two home runs and nine RBI in 24 Grapefruit League games. The four-man bench will include Ruben Tejada, John Mayberry Jr., Kirk Nieuwenhuis and Anthony Recker.

Meanwhile, the eight-man bullpen will include Rafael Montero, Jeurys Familia, Jerry Blevins, Jenrry Mejia, Alex Torres, Carlos Torres, Sean Gilmartin, and Buddy Carlyle .

Mets pitcher Buddy Carlyle has an out clause in contract
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com

Mets pitcher Buddy Carlyle has an out clause in his contract, according to Newsday.

Carlyle re-signed with the club in January on a minor-league deal. If he's not in the majors by June, Carlyle can opt out of his deal and become a free-agent. The 37-year-old posted a 1.45 ERA over 31 innings with the club last year.
