by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com

Braves starter Trevor Cahill (0-1) was knocked out of the third inning by the Marlins on Tuesday, giving up four earned runs on five hits and walking three in just 2 1/3 innings to take the loss.

Cahill, the fifth starter in the Braves' rotation, threw 53 pitches in his first start of the season.

Cahill's next scheduled start is Tuesday in New York against the Mets.

Braves' Trevor Cahill throws about 25 pitches in batting practice
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Braves pitcher Trevor Cahill threw about 25 pitches to teammates Phil Gosselin and Jace Peterson in batting practice Saturday as he looks to stay sharp in preparation for his season debut Tuesday, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

"He looked good, man," Peterson said. "Three- or four-pitch mix, all for strikes. I’m exciting to get him in the rotation."

The Braves didn't need a fifth starter the first time through the rotation, and while Cahill was available to pitch out of the bullpen this week, he has yet to see game action.

Eric Stults, Trevor Cahill earn final two spots in Braves' rotation
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com

Eric Stults, a non-roster invitee to spring training, was named the Braves' No. 4 starter in the rotation, and he'll make his season debut on April 10 at home against the Mets, manager Fredi Gonzalez announced Friday, per the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Stults, 35, owns a 1.89 ERA and has held opponents to a .250 batting average in five games (one start) this spring. The left-hander will make his final start of the spring Saturday against Baltimore. He'll make $2 million this season for cracking the Opening Day roster.

"He's been a guy, you look at his track record, the last couple of years he's pitched close to 200 innings," Gonzalez said. "You look at his starts and you look at his quality starts, he gets you deep into games. You need those guys on the staff, who get you some innings."

Trevor Cahill, who was acquired from Arizona in a trade on Thursday, has been named the fifth starter. Cahill, 27, allowed four earned runs in 10 innings of work this spring. He'll make his regular season debut with the Braves on April 11.

"... We feel like we got a guy with a lot of upside," Gonzalez said. "He's 27, good sinker, he'll pitch in our ballpark, which is a little more forgiving than Arizona. Get that sinker back and he can really help us."

Braves acquire Trevor Cahill from Diamondbacks
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

The Braves have acquired pitcher Trevor Cahill and cash considerations from the Diamondbacks in exchange for outfielder Josh Elander, the teams announced Thursday.

The Diamondbacks are expected to send about $6.5 million to Atlanta in the deal, MLB.com reports.

Cahill made the All-Star team in 2010 and finished that season with an 18-8 record and 2.97 ERA. He hasn't been able to reach that level since, and he went 3-12 with a 5.61 ERA and 105:55 K:BB ratio in 110 2/3 innings last season. He'll likely be ticketed for a spot in Atlanta's rotation to open the season.

Elander spent his second season at the high-Class A level last year, hitting .219/.319/.328 with two home runs, 21 RBI and six stolen bases in 137 at-bats.

D-Backs, Braves have had trade talks regarding Trevor Cahill
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

The Diamondbacks have had trade talks involving starting pitcher Trevor Cahill, sources told The Arizona Republic. However, the Diamondbacks would likely have to pay for half of Cahill's $12 million salary.

The Diamondbacks have spoken to the Braves about Cahill, CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman reports. The deal would be a partial salary dump for the Diamondbacks.

Heyman reported March 2 the Diamondbacks let it be known they would trade Cahill. Heyman also said the Diamondbacks put outfielder Cody Ross and second baseman Aaron Hill on the trading block.

The latest developments with Cahill, however, come on the same day Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale said Thursday the team hasn't ruled out putting prospect Archie Bradley in the rotation, even though they announced their Opening Day rotation plans earlier this week.
