No discomfort for Giants' Matt Cain in bullpen session
by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com

Giants starting pitcher Matt Cain, recovering from surgeries on his elbow and ankle, passed his first bullpen test on Friday.

Cain had surgery to remove bone spurs from his elbow in August. While recovering from that procedure, he had surgery on his ankle the following month.

Buster Posey caught Cain's bullpen session on Friday and told Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle that he could see a difference from last season. Cain grimaced after throwing pitches last season, but he looked "effortless" on Friday.

"He's obviously not fighting around the bone spurs," Posey told Alex Pavlovic of CSN Bay Area. Posey added that Cain threw a variety of pitches, including fastballs, changeups and curves.

Cain told Pavlovic that the session felt great. "I felt pretty much full speed," he said.

Giants C Buster Posey to hit the weights harder this spring
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Giants catcher Buster Posey took a little extra time off this winter, and plans to hit the weights harder this spring to get ready for the 2015 season, Comcast SportsNet reports.

"I really tried to take an extra two weeks more than I had after the '10 and '12 World Series, just to mentally and physically try to recoup as much as possible," Posey said. "And I'm gonna take two weeks into spring training to hit the weights a little bit harder than I have in the past, and hopefully that pays off for me throughout the season."

Giants assistant general manager Bobby Evans said in January that the team expects Posey to catch 120 games but added he thinks "there's room for some above that."

"I wouldn't expect anything below that," Evans said. "Part of the challenge for us is we do want to keep Buster healthy, but we also know he's a difference-maker behind the plate in the way he calls a game, in the way he handles our pitching staff."

Posey played 111 games at catcher in 2014, starting 109 times. He saw slightly more games and games started at the positions both in 2012 and 2013. The 2012 NL MVP finished sixth in the MVP voting last season after hitting .311/.364/.490 with 22 home runs and 89 RBI in 547 at-bats.

Giants not entertaining moving 'franchise catcher' Posey to 3B
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

While the Giants ponder replacements at third base for Pablo Sandoval, who signed a free-agent deal with the Red Sox, one option that won't be on the table is moving two-time All-Star catcher Buster Posey to the hot corner.

Posey played shortstop in college at Florida State before primarily playing catcher and first base as a pro.

"Buster's a catcher," Giants general manager Brian Sabean said Monday at the winter meetings, per MLB.com. "He's a franchise player, a franchise catcher."

Giants C Buster Posey drives in three runs in Game 4 NLCS win
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Giants catcher Buster Posey went 2 for 3 with a walk and three RBI in his team's 6-4 win over the Cardinals in Game 4 of the National League Championship Series Wednesday.

Posey put the Giants on the board with a sacrifice fly in the first inning to tie the score 1-1. The Cardinals were able to put three more runs on the board in the next two innings, but Posey responded with an RBI single in the bottom of the third inning. After the Giants took a lead in the sixth, the catcher added an insurance run with another RBI single. Posey has posted a .333 batting average in 39 postseason at-bats but has yet to mange an extra-base hit. Even so, his excellent Game 4 performance has the Giants one win away from heading to the World Series. Game 5 is set for Thursday.
