Willie Bloomquist officially back with Mariners
by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer

Willie Bloomquist finalized his two-year, $5.8 million deal with the Mariners Thursday, bringing him back to where he began his major-league career in 2002. Bloomquist hit .317 in 139 at-bats last year with the Diamondbacks, but he missed significant time with an oblique injury and a broken hand.

"As of right now, I feel great, my body feels 100 percent and I'm ready to go," the 36-year-old told The Seattle Times. "I took a 94 mph fastball off my hand and broke a couple of bones in it. That's where I missed the bulk of my time. Injuries are going to happen. I've always tried to get between the lines and give it 100 percent. I feel like you are supposed to play that way. And along with that comes some injuries."

Bloomquist is expected to play a reserve role for the Mariners.

Mariners to reunite with Willie Bloomquist
by Al Melchior | Data Analyst

MLB.com reports that free agent utility player Willie Bloomquist reached an agreement to sign with the Mariners on Monday. According to the Arizona Republic, Bloomquist will have a two-year contract in the $5-to-$6 million range.

Bloomquist appeared in only 48 games with the Diamondbacks in 2013, hitting .317 and playing second base, shortstop and left field. He spent the first seven years of his major league career with the Mariners.

Diamondbacks file for free agency
by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer

Diamondbacks third baseman Eric Chavez, catcher Wil Nieves and utility player Willie Bloomquist have declared free agency.

Of them, Chavez played the biggest role in 2013, hitting nine homers in 228 at-bats, but he may be expendable with the emergence of 22-year-old Matt Davidson.

Diamondbacks have plethora of shortstop options
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

The return of Willie Bloomquist after missing nearly two months with a broken bone in his hand has created a logjam at shortstop for Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson. Bloomquist's return means Gibson has a three-man rotation at shortstop, which also includes Didi Gregorius and Cliff Pennington.

"I’ll rotate the guys somewhat," Gibson said, per The Arizona Republic. "We didn’t score any runs (Friday) night, and I think Willie is probably the best shortstop we have, the most offensive. He puts the bat on the ball and allows us to do stuff."

The situation could even become more crowded if the Diamondbacks choose to bring up prospect Chris Owings, who was named MVP of the Pacific Coast League (Triple-A).

"He’s earned it, and he’s got a pretty good future ahead of him," Gibson said of Owings. "He’s going to fit in there somewhere, sometime, some way, somehow."

Willie Bloomquist picks up three hits in return
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com

Diamondbacks infielder Willie Bloomquist had a strong showing Wednesday against the Padres, in his first game in more than two months.

Bloomquist, who had been out with a hand injury since late June, went 3 for 4 in his return to the lineup. He drove in one run with one of his three singles, in a 5-1 loss.

Bloomquist is now hitting .316 in 76 at-bats. He is likely to return in a reserve role while splitting time around the infield.
