Reds RP J.J. Hoover notches first save of the season
by Ruben Palacios | Staff Writer

Reds relief pitcher J.J. Hoover recorded his first save of the season in Wednesday's win over the Pirates.

Hoover needed just 14 pitches to close out the ninth inning in the 5-2 win. He struck out two of the three batters he faced and didn't allow a hit.

Hoover (5-0) has a 1.39 ERA with 24 strikeouts and 13 walks in 32 1/3 innings this season. He's the only Reds player other than closer Aroldis Chapman, who hasn't pitched since returning from paternity leave earlier this week, to record a save this season.

Offseason work paying early dividends for Reds' J.J. Hoover
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Reds pitcher J.J. Hoover struggled in 2014, going 1-10 with a 4.88 ERA, but he focused on turning things around this offseason and has seen early returns on his work, opening the season with wins in his first two appearances, MLB.com reports.

"Last year, unfortunately, I was not executing pitches as well as I am this year," Hoover said. "That is what I was working on all last season. That is what I worked on all offseason -- pretty much the basics."

Hoover recorded 10 straight losses last season, setting a franchise record for relievers.

"He had similar stuff, his velocity was the same, his curveball was the same, but the location of his mix of pitches, and particularly his fastball, was really a step backwards last year," manager Bryan Price said.

Hoover has yet to allow a run in 3 1/3 innings this season while striking out four and walking none.

J.J. Hoover gets win, Aroldis Chapman save in Reds' comeback
by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com

The Reds rallied in the eighth inning for a 5-4 win over the Cardinals on Friday. J.J. Hoover entered the game with the go-ahead run on second in the seventh and ended the inning with a strikeout. He then added a scoreless eighth to earn the win.

Hoover struck out three of the five batters he faced and allowed one hit.

Aroldis Chapman struck out two in the ninth to earn his second save of the season.

Chapman hit 101 mph in the ninth and saved his 115th career game, an MLB record for Cuban pitchers.

Reds finalize bullpen for start of season
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

With the surprising demotion of reliever Sam LeCure to the minors Thursday, the Reds' Opening Day bullpen is set.

It will feature closer Aroldis Chapman, Burke Badenhop, Kevin Gregg, Jumbo Diaz, Tony Cingrani, Manny Parra and J.J. Hoover, per MLB.com.

Gregg was the only non-roster invitee among the group.

Reds still sorting out bullpen options
by Elliott Smith | Staff Writer

While Aroldis Chapman is locked in as the Reds' closer, the eighth-inning job remains up in the air for the club as spring training winds down, according to MLB.com.

Sean Marshall is still recovering from shoulder surgery in 2014, leaving the set-up man spot as an open competition between a trio of players - Sam LeCure, Manny Parra and J.J. Hoover

"I think right now what we're doing is we're trying to figure out who our best options are," Reds manager Bryan Price said.

"We're going to have to evolve as a bullpen. I think we know that Chapman's the closer and that we're going to have to evolve into roles to a certain degree," Price added. "Opening Day, I couldn't tell you who would be in the eighth inning. … There's a lot of balls in the air with the bullpen beyond the closer."
