Hellweg finished last season weighing 208 pounds, but reported to camp at 245 pounds. "I cut out a lot of bad stuff in my diet," Hellweg said. "Mostly protein and carbs, no gluten. It helped. It was a lot of work, actually."
Hellweg said he feels great entering camp. He said he struggled with weight last season, but would not say whether he thought it contributed to some second half struggles. "I lost a lot of weight in July and August, so I just wanted to put it back on to make sure that if I was going to lose it again, I was going to be OK weight-wise,” he said
Hellweg posted a 6.75 ERA in 30 2/3 innings last season.
"I know it stinks for one of the young guys who was going to be competing for that extra spot, but they’ll have their opportunities," Brewers starting pitcher Kyle Lohse said. "This helps out the rotation a lot, I think. It’s a good thing for us."
Hellweg allowed 10 earned runs over his final 20 innings pitched since joining the team in September. He finished the season with a 1-4 record, a 6.75 ERA and a 2.15 WHIP over eight appearances (seven starts).
Hellweg has walked five batters in three of his last five starts while posting a stupefying 6:22 K:BB ratio with a 7.43 ERA and 2.25 WHIP in 26 2/3 innings. He's slated to face the Mets Thursday.
Hellweg dropped to 1-4 on the year as he surrendered four earned runs on eight hits and a walk over five innings. He threw 84 pitches before his removal from the game by manager Ron Roenicke. Hellweg struck out one batter and gave up a two-run homer to Shin-Soo Choo in the second inning.
The 24-year-old starter has made six career outings for Milwaukee, all coming this season. He's made five starts and they haven't all been very good. That said, he's shown promise and definitely has a future as a major league starter. Hellweg is scheduled to make his next start Friday against St. Louis.
