Director of player development Mark Scialabba said they liked what they saw out of Rivero during spring training, masnsports.com reports.
"Obviously electric arm. The fastball comes out good," Scialabba said. "He jumps on hitters and its just matter of him harnessing his stuff and just getting repetition. He certainly opened some eyes in spring training and had a great camp. He showed the ability to throw strikes and utilize his fastball, slider combination and a changeup as well that can play up here."
The move gives Washington two southpaws for its weekend series against Philadelphia. Rivero was off to a slow start in the minors this season with a 10.12 ERA. He performed well, however, in his last two appearances.
"He's powerful. We put him in the relieving role over the last six or seven times on the mound," manager Matt Williams said. "Three (games) at the end of spring training, a couple more in the minor leagues. He's gone back-to-back down there, so we feel confident in that regard. What he's shown us is he's throwing the ball over the plate, it's mid-90s fastball with breaking ball and changeup. We need another lefty, so he's a logical option for us. Power lefty out of the pen."
Stammen made five appearances this season, including recording his second hold Tuesday against the Red Sox. He hasn't allowed a run in four innings.
Stammen said he started to feel stiffness in his forearm a few days ago. He will undergo an MRI.
"I think any time it's in that part of your arm, everybody jumps to the worst-case scenario," Stammen said, per MLB.com. "But hopefully that's not the case. ... But you never know. I'm optimistic about it, and hopefully it's calmed down in a few days."
Jordan made one start this season for Syracuse, tossing six scoreless innings. Jordan has not pitched in relief in the majors, but he has made 14 starts, going 1-6 with a 4.31 ERA.
Jordan posted a 3.38 ERA in four spring training appearances, allowing three runs on seven hits with four strikeouts. Meek had a 7.71 ERA over 4 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on five hits with four strikeouts.
Stoke did not make an appearance in spring training.
Although, this spring Jordan is focused on staying healthy after he hurt his ankle in 2013 and his elbow in 2014.
“Being healthy is the first thing on my list, and then staying healthy,” Jordan said Sunday, per The Washington Times. “I’m going to perform. If I’m healthy, I’m going to perform. So just staying healthy is the name of the game.
“Last year I didn’t come into spring training like I really wanted to. I wasn’t as strong as I am now, or in the year before that. It only makes sense that’s why I couldn’t stay healthy last year.”
Players can't remain on the 60-day DL throughout the offseason, so the moves were expected. McLouth had surgery on his labrum in August. Jordan spent most of the season injured before undergoing arm surgery in October.
