Rockies' Weiss: Rafael Betancourt 'is amazing'
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Rockies pitcher Rafael Betancourt made his second appearance Wednesday since suffering a bruised jaw on a comebacker, allowing one hit and one walk in one scoreless inning while striking out two.

"Yeah, Rafi, Rafi is amazing," manager Walt Weiss said after the outing, per MLB.com. "He still has that pinpoint command. He can clip the corners with everything he throws. He's still very effective."

Betancourt is in camp as a nonroster invitee and looking to win a spot in the rotation, but Weiss wouldn't say whether the veteran has a leg up in the competition.

"He's still battling for a spot," Weiss said.

"I don't like to see it like that," Betancourt said. "Everyone here has a chance to make this team. But those kind of things are coming from the front office, the coaches, the manager. They're the ones who are going to make those decisions. For me, I just need to keep working hard. It's always been that way for me."

Betancourt has surrendered just one earned run in 5 2/3 spring innings while striking out eight and walking one.

Rockies' Rafael Betancourt out to prove he can still pitch
by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com

Rockies pitcher Rafael Betancourt has one goal left this spring: prove he can still do it. Because he's not working with a guaranteed contract, he can't slack off at all.

"Even when I had a guaranteed contract, I would never come here and take any day for granted," Betancourt said. "I always try to come here and be the same person every time. Now it's a different situation, because I just got invited to Spring Training, and what I have to show is that I'm healthy. That's the most important thing. The other stuff will come along, and all I have to do is pitch. The other things, I'm not really concerned. All I need to do is prove I'm healthy and prove I can pitch."

Betancourt suffered a torn UCL in August 2013, leading to the team declining his option last year.

"I think the hardest part was last year, when [I had] four months without throwing, just rehabbing," Betancourt said. "And then you start playing catch and you have to follow a throwing program every time you do it. It's kind of weird. Even when I started pitching in Minor League games last year, it was hard. Recovery time was tough. It was painful every time."

Rockies' Rafael Betancourt works scoreless inning in spring debut
by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com

Rockies pitcher Rafael Betancourt worked one scoreless inning in his first major league appearance since suffering an elbow injury in August 2013, reports MLB.com.

"Every time I go in the game, it matters for me -- even before I was hurt, it's always been like that," said Betancourt, who turns 40 on April 29. "I like to get in all those situations to see how I'm going to feel."

Betancourt survived a two-out double by Chris Coghlan and helped get Colorado the 7-5 win Sunday.

"I was very anxious. It had been a long time since facing big-league hitters. I'm on a mission, first to show that I'm healthy and prove to them I can still pitch. I have to take care of myself to be able to do that."

Rockies sign Betancourt, Quintanilla to minor-league deals
by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com

The Rockies signed former closer Rafael Betancourt and infielder Omar Quintanilla to minor-league contracts Friday, per MLB.com.

Quintanilla spent the last two seasons with the Mets, while Betancourt did not pitch in the majors in 2014 as he was working his way back from Tommy John surgery. He did pitch in the minors, going 2-0 with a 4.66 ERA.

"I have another chance," Betancourt said by phone from his offseason home in Orlando, Fla. "Compared to how it was last year or even when I was pitching in games, I feel a lot more normal now.

"When I threw for the Rockies last week, I threw all my pitches -- fastball, changeup and breaking ball. Last year, I didn't throw any breaking balls, because my arm felt weird. It's 16 months after surgery and everything is going well. I'm also happy the Rockies stuck with me; they have a new GM [Jeff Bridich] but still were there for me, and I appreciate that."
