  • Clement no longer top prospect: 1B Jeff Clement will join the Pirates in spring training as a non-roster invitee this year. Oh, the difference a year makes. Clement entered the 2010 season seeing regular playing time for Pittsburgh, but he was down in the minors by June because of poor offensive production and he continued to live down the hype of once being a top prospect in the Mariners system. "You don't want to ever say a player has missed it," general manager Neal Huntington told MLB.com. "The potential is still there. We have seen the raw power. We still see the things that we liked when we acquired him as part of the five players that we got from Seattle. But there may be some things out of his control. You hate giving up on young players, and especially when you still see the potential. If for whatever reason the potential goes away, you kind of scratch your head, wonder where it went or if you misevaluated it."

    Fantasy Analysis
The things out of Clement's control is the myriad of players ahead of him on the depth chart. Lyle Overbay is going to start the year at first base for Pittsburgh, and he can be backed up by Garrett Jones and Steve Pearce. Not to mention that Pittsburgh signed the likes of Garrett Atkins, Andy Marte and Josh Fields to minor-league deals this offseason, meaning Clement has even more players to contend with. It's probably best to leave Clement off Fantasy rosters until he makes an impact in the majors.

  • August 23, 2010: Cardinals gain on wild-card lead after trouncing Pirates
Albert Pujols hit a three-run home run one pitch after injured Pirates starter Ross Ohlendorf was pulled during a four-run St. Louis first inning, and the Cardinals moved to within a game of the NL wild card lead by beating Pittsburgh 10-2 on Monday night.
