  • Padres' Donovan Solano: Exiting starting nine

Solano is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Mets.

Solano had started each of the last eight games -- with seven coming at third base -- and went 5-for-29 with two home runs, three walks, six RBI and four runs. He should continue to have a regular spot in the lineup versus left-handed pitching, but Solano's opportunities to play against righties will likely become more limited now that Manny Machado is playing third base again after he had relegated to designated-hitter duties recently following his return from a right hip flexor strain.

  • Padres' Jeremiah Estrada: Moves past illness

Estrada (illness) struck out two and gave up an earned run on one hit and one walk over one inning out of the bullpen in Wednesday's 5-4 win over the Athletics.

Estrada relayed prior to Wednesday's game that he had been dealing with an illness, but it didn't deter the Padres from turning to him in the eighth inning while the Padres faced a 3-2 deficit. Though Estrada let in a run to give the Athletics a 4-2 lead heading into the bottom of the eighth, Donovan Solano tied the game with a two-run home run later in the frame before Jackson Merrill hit a walk-off blast in the bottom of the ninth. Estrada hasn't been used since Wednesday, but with his bout with the illness now a few more days in the rear-view mirror, he should be available for Sunday's series finale against the Mets.

  • Padres' Manny Machado: Returns to third base Saturday

Machado started at third base and went 0-for-4 in a loss to the Mets on Saturday.

Machado recently missed four games due to a strained right hip flexor and was limited to DH duties in four straight contests following his return. The veteran was able to resume playing the field Saturday, though he didn't look like he was up to full speed while running out a grounder in the seventh inning. It's unclear how much the hip issue is bothering Machado, as he's batting just .200 (4-for-20) with no runs or RBI and seven strikeouts since returning to the lineup.

  • Padres' Jackson Merrill: Goes deep again Saturday

Merrill went 1-for-3 with a solo home run Saturday in a loss to the Mets.

Merrill produced the only Padres run with a solo shot to center field in the fifth inning. The rookie has homered in three straight contests, belting four total long balls over that span. Merrill has also notched at least one hit in nine of his past 10 games and is batting .351 (13-for-37) with eight extra-base hits, six RBI, seven runs and two steals during that stretch.

  • Padres' Adam Mazur: Wild again in defeat

Mazur (0-2) took the loss against the Mets on Saturday, allowing two runs on three hits and six walks while striking out four batters over 3.2 innings.

Mazur has struggled to find the strike zone through his first three big-league outings, racking up 13 walks over 12.2 frames. Surprisingly, none of Mazur's career-high six free passes Saturday resulted in a score -- the rookie managed to wiggle out of a constant stream of baserunners until a pair of Mets doubles in the fourth inning resulted in New York's first run. Nonetheless, Mazur isn't likely to find major-league success if he continues to issue free passes at his current rate, and he could be pushed out of San Diego's rotation if Yu Darvish (groin) is able to return to action next week.

  • Padres' Joe Musgrove: Could resume throwing soon

Padres manager Mike Shildt said Friday that Musgrove (elbow) is getting closer to picking up a ball and starting a throwing program, per MLB.com.

Musgrove was diagnosed with a bone spur in his right elbow in early June and consequently received PRP and cortisone injections. While Shildt said Friday that the veteran pitcher could resume throwing soon, he didn't give specifics on a timeline. Given that Musgrove dealt with a similar injury in May, the Padres are unlikely to rush him back, and he's probably at least a month away from a return.

  • Padres' Yu Darvish: Tosses bullpen session

Darvish (groin) threw a bullpen session Friday, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Darvish simulated three innings in the session, tossing 60 pitches. The veteran hurler said before throwing the bullpen that he expects the session to be sufficient ramp-up to allow him to return to the Padres' rotation without a rehab assignment. Per Acee, Darvish could start a game during San Diego's homestand against Milwaukee that begins next Thursday.

  • Padres' Luis Campusano: Out of lineup again Saturday

Campusano is not in the lineup for Saturday's contest versus the Mets.

He will give way to Kyle Higashioka at catcher for the second day in a row and the third time over the Padres' last four contests. Campusano has just a .541 OPS since the beginning of May.

  • Padres' Jurickson Profar: Collects two hits in return

Profar went 2-for-4 in Friday's loss to the Mets.

Profar missed Wednesday's contest due to left knee soreness. The issue has been ongoing for Profar, but Wednesday's absence was his first of the campaign, so it's likely that he'll continue playing through it unless the injury worsens. Profar has been among the best hitters in the league this season -- his two singles Friday pushed his batting average up to .326, second among qualified hitters in the majors behind teammate Luis Arraez.

  • Padres' Jackson Merrill: Stays hot Friday

Merrill went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Friday's 2-1 loss to the Mets.

The 21-year-old went yard for the third time in the last two games, accounting for all of the Padres' offense on the night with a fifth-inning shot off Sean Manaea. Merrill seems to have flipped a switch in June -- over the last nine games, he's batting .353 (12-for-34) with four doubles, three homers, two steals, five RBI, six runs and an impressive 8.3 percent strikeout rate.

  • Padres' Matt Waldron: Stuck with tough loss Friday

Waldron (4-6) took the loss Friday as the Padres were downed 2-1 by the Mets, giving up two runs on three hits and two walks over seven innings. He struck out two.

The knuckleballer delivered his fourth straight quality start while lasting seven innings for just the second time this season, but San Diego's offense gave little support. Waldron has gone seven straight outings in which he's pitched at least five innings and allowed two runs or fewer, posting a stellar 1.91 ERA, 0.87 WHIP and 41:10 K:BB through 42.1 innings over that stretch. He'll look to keep rolling in his next start, which is scheduled to come on the road next week in Philadelphia.

  • Padres' Luis Campusano: Taking seat Friday

Campusano is not in the lineup for Friday's contest versus the Mets.

He will yield to the hot-hitting Kyle Higashioka at catcher Friday. Campusano is slashing just .146/.203/.182 across his last 19 games.

  • Padres' Jurickson Profar: Back in San Diego lineup

Profar (knee) will start in left field and bat third in Friday's game versus the Mets.

Profar exited Tuesday and sat out Wednesday due to left patellar tendinitis, which is something he's evidently dealt with off and on for years. However, he worked out pregame Friday following Thursday's team off day and is feeling well enough to give it a go.

  • Padres' Donovan Solano: Goes yard twice in win

Solano went 2-for-4 with two home run and three RBI in Wednesday's 5-4 win over the A's.

All the Padres' offense came from long balls, with Solano supplying a solo shot off Hogan Harris in the second inning and a two-run homer off Lucas Erceg in the eighth. Solano's only other home run this season came May 27, but during that 16-game stretch he's slashing .315/.367/.519 with seven runs and nine RBI while filling in as the starting third baseman for a banged-up Manny Machado.

  • Padres' Jackson Merrill: Makes history with walk-off homer

Merrill went 2-for-4 with two solo home runs in Wednesday's 5-4 win over the A's.

The rookie center fielder took Hogan Harris deep in the fifth inning, setting the stage for Merrill to play hero by ripping a slider from Mason Miller down the right-field line in the bottom of the ninth for his first career walk-off homer. In the process, Merrill become the youngest player in Padres history with a walk-off blast, and the youngest player in MLB history with a two-homer game that included a walk-off shot. The 21-year-old snapped a 26-game homer drought with the performance. He's been heating up in June, however, batting .355 (11-for-31) over the last eight contests with four doubles, two steals, four RBI and five runs.
