More NHL offseason: Rumors | Top 50 Free Agents | Buyout Tracker | Trades | Transactions

One of the highlights of the NHL schedule every season is the trade deadline. It has dried up a bit in recent years with increased parity but it's always a big day in the NHL.

Now we know when it will be this season; March 5 at 3 ET. So mark your calendars for the wheeling and dealing.

It's tough to determine right now with it being so early but it would appear the early trade deadline headliners are Thomas Vanek and Ryan Miller in Buffalo, should the Sabres choose to deal them away. But you'll start to hear chatter of almost anybody who is a free agent after this season as the deadline approaches, especially if they play on bad teams.

What's interesting to note is that the deadline comes just a week after the league resumes operations on Feb. 26 from the Olympic break. That could be an interesting couple of weeks for some players around the league.
