Brayden Schenn is a bright young prospect for the Philadelphia Flyers, but he’s starting to gain a reputation. His hit on New Jersey defenseman Peter Harrold in the closing minutes of regulation of Friday night’s game is going to draw the attention of the league.
There’s a lot of elements of recklessness in this hit. It appears Schenn leaves his feet just before making contact with Harrold, the distance to the boards is less than ideal and, while it’s tough to determine if there was direct contact to the head, the hit was high. Schenn was given a minor for charging on the play.
Schenn has already been suspended once this season for a hit against the Devils. He got a one-game ban for launching into Anton Volchenkov and making clear head contact. This would make Schenn a repeat offender, which shouldn’t afford him much sympathy from the department of player safety.
The Volchenkov hit is probably worse if you’re going to compare the two, but both are pretty bad. Harrold immediately got to his feet after the hit, which is good news for Schenn, but by no means should it let him off the hook.
Based on his repeat-offender status, this hit should earn Schenn at least some time off.
Having left his feet on both hits, this is something Schenn has to correct, and soon. Missing a few more games at the order of the department of player safety might be a good step in trying to change this type of behavior before it becomes a trend.
